Really really simple and I never thought it would cause so much offence.

Take all the bins away:D

We don't have an office cleaner, Anne and I clean up every weekend. Have been getting fed up of slovenliness - confidential stuff left in bins (and so not shredded), disgusting used chewing gum and lunchtime food leftovers to sort out. I decided to put an end to it all, have a central bin and recycling point, and took the bins away over the weekend. So now everyone has to get up and walk a few steps to put a pile of stuff in the proper bin.

I am not Mister Popular this morning. I don't care.

or you could hire a cleaner for less than the cost of lost productivity due to feelings of hatred for the management?

My brother founded his business as a paperless office. Only one printer for outgoing correspondence. All incoming scanned and then filed. A hot desk policy which meant nobody had an allocated desk. first in picked first desk etc.

It did not work. His office admin insisted she need all sorts of personal stuff and therefore she must have a set of drawers for her stuff etc. He has won on one account though. No eating at the desks. He has allocated space with comfy armchairs (like the Spanish inquisition), free coffee, a dish washer so no mugs/plates overnight and a microwave etc. where people may eat.

That way the main office does not stink of food. No risk of damage to computers etc from tea/coffee etc. The other strange thing he does is provide breakfast for all. He insists nobody skip breakfast and that way they can then work at 100%.

Ed - Good for you mate. They did it here about 2 years ago and took all desk bins away and put a waste bin and recycling bin point in every area. Out of 500 staff I believe there were only two complaints.

One from the FD, because he was a c0ck and his secretary as she is a pain in the &r$e.

Since then we monitor the amount that gets recycled and it is an incredible amount that was previously being landfilled.

Nobody moans about going to the kitchen to make a coffee do they, we have a bin point there so if you have something to dispose of then take it with you.

The same supsects also moaned when we took away desktop printers in 2000 and again when we replaced them with even less printers in 2007.............just because they can moan they do.

Ignore them.

Oh and earring? What's that about?

Was in Manchester last weekend. Wandering round Selfridges, spur of moment decided to get a stud in my left ear. So I did. Wifey did not like it. In the interests of peace at home, I took it out. It'll go back some time:cool:

Ed, our office also implemented this change to the system and now we have recycling and waste bins at central locations around the office floors.

The first few days pleaple forgot that it happened, and were throwing there waste on the floors due to forgetting that the bins were removed - so the cleaners were even more p'd off to be adding to there workload.

So now they have an easy life of just emptying the central bins, a quick feather duster on the desks "great, not" - and a speedy hoover and there off.

Now we are all used to it, and quite welcome getting up and walking to these points to have a break.

Your office will come good in the end. Promise.

Good call mate - might have un-balanced the running being unevenly weighted and all that. Can't have you running around in circles!!

Never knew that so many peeps had done it already. Too early to tell but it looks better without unsightly bins all around:D

good for you, is a consequence of their own idleness/lazyness so it may make them realise thier errors!!, leaving confidential paperwork in a bin unshredded does not sound good. plus doing your bit for the environment :-)

They took the bins (next to desks) away where I work too. We have really good recycling facilities and not having a bin makes you much more inclined to recycle.

They did this recently at my place of work, I've got no problem with it, except they dont have recycling bins for some of the rubbish i.e. cardboard, so we're still not recycling as much as we could do.

And the bins they've put in are to small for all the stuff we generate so they get over filled and then the waste spills out everywhere.

Similar policy here and at most places I've been lately. All good commonsense stuff.

What does upset me is lack of bins in public spaces, I know the IRA had a habit of dropping bombs in them back in the day and local scoundrels always used to set fire to the plastic ones that were attached to lamp posts, but it seems impossible to find a bin anywhere now.

Has anyone spotted on in Paddington station? I don't know of a single bin there, yet there are plenty of fast food outlets churning out stuff in wrappers.

Hmm, I seem more motivated by this topic than is perhaps normal...

You'll find that train stations, especially in London, won't have bins all due to bomb threats.

Ed, you've given me an idea for my office. I wonder how my collegue would react to me taking the bins away.........

Do it. It makes the office look less untidy, it stops the musty stale smell and it encourages people to be tidy. I have already decided that I'm not going to replace the bins.

Good on you. Its just bone idleness that people can't be bothered to keep the place tidy.
