The chief exec of the cricket club is quoted as saying, "“The name was nothing whatsoever to do with the Crusades in the 11th and 12th century" yet there's a photo of an fan wearing a t-shirt with a knight in armour on it.

If there was an, for example, irish team trying to promote irish football to the kids & they called their team, I dunno, the docklands bombers - I think I'd be a tad pi$$ed off.

So, y'know, pretty please, let's not start with this minority-bashing again!

What about the use of the word Moor, again used to describe people of several historic and modern populations of Muslim (and earlier non-Muslim) people of Berber descent from North Africa, some of whom came to inhabit the Iberian Peninsula.

So is Dartmoor and Bodmin moor, now respectfully called Dart and Bodmin.

Er, the government have nothing to do with it! The club received a couple of complaints and decided to act on it. Everyone's saying "PC" but maybe they just figure that if their name puts people off, it'll lower their gates. After all, the man says himself that it's a crusade to draw people into the sport.

There's a good old religious saying that transcends many different religions

Isn't it about time these religious maniacs kept their mouths shut when it comes to their sky-fairy worship, and just let people get on with their daily lives. I for one am sick and tired of political correctness - if a woman has what I think are great breasts or backside I want the right to be able to tell her so without fear of getting put on the sex offenders register. If a Muslim doesn't like his kids seeing others eating pig products, then tell him not to come and live in a predominantly christian society. If it were down to me I'd end the ritual mutilation of jewish boys by making cirumcision for religious purposes illegal, punishable by life imprisonment under child cruelty laws. That'd put the cat amongst the pigeons.

I suppose it does conjure up the memory of the atrocities committed in the name of Christianity nearly 800 years ago.

However, there is no need to change name. FFS if I remember correctly even the daily express has a crusader as its logo.

To my mind theses days crusade/crusader etc is someone who works tirelessly for a cause

You make a good point. It is entirely these different interpretations of the word that make this so difficult. To most people in the UK the word crusader will mean a tireless worker for a cause or someone trying to get a law changed etc. as you point out.

To a Muslim, especially one from the middle east, it represents a war on their religion. George Bush lost the support of Muslim community after 9/11 by announcing a crusade against terrorism, by the time he changed the rhetoric to a 'War on Terror' the damage was done.

I can see why the word is inflammatory to a Muslim, but this is putatively a Christian country and the word should be interpreted by local conditions. I see no reason why they should change the name of the team.

i agree with this and i'd be really miffed if my local team who i've supported for the last 10 years that they've been in watford and now partially work for, suddenly decided to change their name.

would you expect something like this to happen if you were a christian living in a majority muslim or jewish country and see the name changed? i don't bloomin well think so!
