With grit running out and my journey on the SV already being treacherous as it is I maybe sliding on my bottom before too long. :(

Anyone else in the same boat as me with the bike being their only means of transport?

then why risk it?

then why risk it?

Pretty much 75% of this winter the nights have been at or below freezing and it's only in extreme cases that I can get a lift. If I didn't risk it I'd never be at work. :)

I really dont understand the point in riding with the weather like it is, I appreciate that you need to get to work and that you dont drive, but if you come off and bust a leg or arm or worse, then you'll be off for a while...

surely that could (and has by others) be extended to riding bikes in general :smt102

Cheers Mark.

Yes it could, I just dont see the point in going out on two wheels in the snow when the roads not been gritted, its asking for an off IMHO.

I know it's all money Scott, but can you not find a cheap off roader type 125 to tide you over. You've just spent a lot of money getting your bike right(ish).

Don't envy you one bit, I have to say. :(

Plus1

This is a job for a cheapo 125 with knobblys (?) ... Easier to keep a 125 upright - easier to pick it up if you don't...

I had the choice a month or so ago, another bike or a car. At some point in my life I'm going to have to get a car on the road plus it'll be safer. If I knew it was going to be this bad then I might have gone with the bike. :D

How long is your commute? Pete and Sosha's suggestions make sense, if you can afford it. If not, p***bike?

I just got an xr400 for the winter (Still fell off it though) but it done more damage to the road than the bike :) now i spend my icy mornings riding along the grass verge and down byways. On Monday even a taxi wouldent come and get me due to the snow but i still made it without crashing!

Not the best attitude to have Scott, just take things easy. Or go with the suggestions of a 125.

What's the (dare I suggest it) public transport like where you are?

Scott, Liz picked up this from ebay a little while ago

Honda XLR 125, she paid I think £300 for it and it was taxed and tested. OK its not fast by any means, but its going to be alot cheaper to repair than your SV is if you drop it. Wont cost you much to insure either I wouldnt have thought...

i would go for a car over a bike though, to commute in this weather,

I've already passed my car theory test and started lessons so unfortunately it's too late. :(

I agree that it's not the best attitude to have but the season didn't start all too well with the crash I had at the start. With the roads gritted I've been lucky to do 25 mph on 60 mph roads. I just hope we get a sudden good spell to end the winter. :)
Public transport in non-existent where I am.

I am going to pick my new toy up tomorrow :) Its a minter, and is a lot cheaper on insurance than I thought... £66 on top of the lot for the rest of the year for a 20 year old with 2 years no claims :) Will help me in these conditions and fuel economy wise, i'm hoping to not have to fill up anymore than once a week :D

I can't afford another bike, but I so want one. Something that just works.

i dont see the point, if your worried about comming off due to the bad weather, in getting another bike?

you have just as much chance coming off any bike

i do see the point in getting a winter hack to abuse, so you can keep your other bike for the nicer weather though

Don't like my bike, don't want to spend on it, can't afford another :p

You've answered yourself there. Another bike to allow you to drop a bit, a bit lighter for if and when you do drop it.

See mike's rideout thread, no point derailing here- just hacked off with it.

Seggons, 10 lessons you said didn't you? will you be getting a car soon then?

Im not buying this bike with the intention of dropping it of course, but what would you rather have to let go of because its slipping away, your blade or a DT125 or summit like that?

I've come off in an icy car park already this winter and it was down to the bike being to far down to pick back up from falling so painfully had to drop it. With a lighter bike, might have the chance of a save...

10 hours with the test on March 11th. If I pass first time and if I can afford the £1k insurance on a motor after then I'll be safe. But that feels like an eternity in the current climate.

good point.

although i still think if your worried about coming off.......... buying another bike is not realy the soluition.

I know the feeling, I have no idea if I'll still be in this job in march :(
Insurance is a killer, hard to take after having it on the bike as well. I don't think I could want a car enough to pay that :p

That and little 125's are easy to keep rubber side down with a bit of boot. Hard work with the weight of an SV or similar

True, but I'd rather chuck £300 worth of ratty Honda 125 on the tarmac than my GSXR...

£300 worth of h*nda that will still look the same when you pick it up too!
