View Full Version : So I need some new ring spanners

doing a bit of work on the lads van at the weekend, I decided my motley collection of ring spanners has seen better days. One or two decent one others I seem to have acquired.
So looking round, nobody seems to make affordable sets any more. Britool seem to cover about 8-19mm similar with snap on. I therefore wonder about these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TENG-11PC-METRIC-DOUBLE-RING-SPANNER-SET-TTX6311-B-NEW_W0QQitemZ270335264216QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Han d_Tools_Equipment?hash=item270335264216&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1700%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318)
even then there are some gaps in my requirement that I have amongst my odd balls.
Comments please. Do people rate them, if not what.

As long as they are genuine Teng they should be fine as they carry a lifetime guarantee.

I don't think you'll go far wrong with those assuming they're genuine Teng.

But Halfrauds do not do a set of ring spanners (looking online), just a limited number of ring spanners
8+9, 10+12, 11+13, 15+16, 17+19, 22+24 = £36 for a partial set. Are they even any good. I defiantly need 21,23,26,30 and 32mm.
2 people have said "if they are genuine Teng", is there a problem with fake tools? I mean are there actually people manufacturing tools claiming to be teng, britool, mac, snap on etc. I could understand someone doing it, but i guess the fakes would be spotted in seconds or on the first tight nut.

I was warned of fakes by Sid Squid & Rictus when I got a set of snap on sockets and ratchet on ebay. Mine turned out to be genuine (and quite cheap, cheaper than halfords). But its worth taking into consideration, even more so if its a private seller.

I quite like our teng socket set, the spanners are good IMO. Not snap on but they are quality tools.
Might be worth calling this chap:
0800 161 30 31 ask for Aidan, or Email: Aidan@toolshack.biz
He's posted on the below forum saying he'd give a special discount on Teng stuff - might be worth a shot...

I'm after spanners that can be used like a ratchet but are open ended. The open end has one moving jaw if i remember correctly. Can't for the life of me remember what they're called though
I bought my old man a set of Crescent ratchet spanners from costco wholesalers about 2 years ago and they are still going strong (he's a mechanic so they probably get used every other day) i think for about 30 quid you get 8mm, 10, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19mm.

I love my teng tools stuff, it's well made, precise and tough, really all you need. And it looks and feels nice too, nice grippy surface, even covered with oil they still grip. toolshack usually have pretty decent prices.

I have had a set of Teng Tools sockets since my apprenticeship , they have been abused , hung from , stood on , gurned at with monumental efforts put into them ................ and they still look like new . Can`t fault them ;)

Echo the above, Teng is good stuff. Watch for carp on Ebay though.

I wouldn't buy them for day to day use, they don't carry much torque reliably. They're useful for awkward spots with not much access, but I wouldn't use them for initial loosening or final tightening - like any ratchet it's a potentially weak spot.

Halfords used to sell them as 'fast spanners' but the only ones I've been able to find recently are by Facom, part code 40R.JE9T
On the subject of ring spanners, the Halfords ratchet rings are excellent and Halfords are, once again, selling them about half price as they seem to do on a periodic basis. Failing that, I have a Britool set (RRFJMSET12) which seem fine.

I did come across http://cpc.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standard/109880605-40.jpgthese for £36 from CPC, they also do similar in an unknown brand
As I had some vouchers for christmas that are accepted at halfrauds I popped down to see what they have. No full sets of ring, just 5 loose spanners so back to plan a I think and go with the ebay Teng set.

Weird. I was in my local Halfords on Saturday and they had sets of both ratchet rings and flexible head ratchet rings in stock.
I have a set of Sealy Ratchet spanners and very nice the are too. Tim, why do you need ring spanners anyway? I havent used a ring spanner in years.

A good example from the work I was doing this weekend is the top suspension mounting. It is within a recess so it is impossible to put a flat spanner on it. A socket will not do as you need to hold the strut with an allen key to stop it turning with the mounting nut/cap. So only a cranked ring spanner will do.
Next area was where the strut bolts to the hub. access is obstructed by the brake caliper so it is impossible to get a socket on. A flat spanner would foul the hub/strut. But a ring spanner stands clear giving me room to get my hand gripping the thing properly.
Horses for courses. Most of the time I can get away with combination spanners, but sometimes there are jobs where the more appropriate tool is a ring spanner. Being a tool tart I have a motley collection I have acquired over the years one or two are decent. but most I bought when they were all I good afford. I just thought it would be nice to have a full set of good decent ones instead of just a couple. I have had my fair share of spanner rash over the years normally as a result of inferior tools. Now older/wiser, If I must work on my kids cars, at least avoid complications/pain brought about by poor tools slipping etc.
In saying the above. I only used one ring spanner for the lads suspension both sides though 21 and 23mm. It was one of my decent spanners a Gedore one I bought about 12 years ago. There may be some cost saving in only replacing the cruddy ones. but after all I am a tart.
