So what do you all think of it? Anyone doing anything special? Or are you like me and think its all commercialised?

I personally think its a waste of time and money because if you love someone, you dont need to "prove" your love for them by doing elaborate gestures on a specific day of the year. You should show your love and appreciation for them by doing small & simple things throughout the year. For example, matt sometimes comes home from uni with a bar of galaxy chocolate (which is my fave :-D) and i think its really nice and thoughtful and lovely :-D

Its just my opinion anyhoo..!

gah, if Im Indoors got all romantic for v day I'd think he was ill, had been hit on the head by a brick(which I've thought about doing myself lately) or had won the lottery and not told me......

valentines day....only men in fairy tales remember it don't they? The usual caveman type always forgets!

She gets a card and some flowers.

Then again, there are always flowers in the house.

It's only commericalised if you buy in to that side of it, you can still be extra romantic on Valetines Day. I do buy a card and choccies but its not the gifts that count........is it? :)

DizzyB, does that mean you chose a caveman type! To be honest, I do eat half the chocolates (not before I give them to her!) but I think I would get a hard time if I forgot a card! I also have to buy the daughter one or she feels left out, am I setting her up for a fall later in life? :p

lol.....it depends on what mood hes in to be a caveman ;-)
Don't get me wrong, he does have an occasional romantic thought, last night he went to Asda and came home bearing cream cakes :-) he doesn't like cream cakes, and if he buys me chocolate, I know its all for me, cause he hates the stuff! Its a very rare occurance though.

....still he'll forget valentines day, not sure if its in his vocab.

Commercialised pain in the ****. That was my view when I was in a relationship... it remains my view now that I'm not. :p

I think I'll stay in and watch action and sci-fi films or something. The streets are no place for the bitter on valentines day.

New years and valentines day are pretty much the main 'celebrations' that I can completely avoid. Halloween is the only one I look forward to.

Telll you what I do like, when my little boy has been at school and hes made something:smt060he comes out of school with whatever it is that he has made dangling from his hand, usually half squashed under his lunch bag and book bag. He says ''its valentines day on so and so, and we've been making these''......well i'm not certain what it is sometimes, and the writing is just about readable, but it brings a big hug and a smile:-D

Sometimes we make an affort, sometimes we don't. Not fussed either way- TBH I'd rather have the odd surprise during the year than a bunch of flowers on that particular day.

it's a right royal pain in the a*se.

Evie M is away that week, so we thought we'd have a weekend on the bikes and go to our usual favourite hotel in Wales, nice long run on the bikes.
But it's flippin Valentines Day, so I'm going to struggle to get booked in, and find somewhere to eat, so we'll end up paying a fortune to eat in the hotel.
grrrrrrrr.

Blimey, me and Izi will be together on Valentines day. We're going from a knackered single bed to my new effing great kig bed, so we'll have that weekend in pure comfort :D
We'll have a bottle of wine, cook something nice and have a relaxing day together. But we do that when we're together anyway :)

Putting the missus on the back of the new toy as she will actually come on it, so we will go for a ride somewhere and have a meal and a day out and tuck up somewhere for the night :)

Plus it is her bday on the 12th and I took her to Paris for both last year so time for us to do summit a bit more for my enjoyment  Even though I loved Paris.

I'm taking my missus on holiday for valentines this year, fly out to Prague on Sunday and our last night is the 14th. It should be nice, I normally hate all of this bull **** but I'm making up for last year, when I rather inconveniently broke my thumb into many pieces and had to have surgery on valentines. She was not impressed.

A dozen red roses will be half the price both the week before and the week after.

However Mrs. BanannaMan loves it ...so ....
she'll be getting those overpriced flowers, chocolate, night out and more.

Shouldn't there be a holiday for the blokes where the lasses have to buy us bike bits or some such???

Gah tis definitely commercialized tripe. Generally makes singletons feel crap that not being in a relationship and those in a relationship generally feel pressured into doing something. YC an me don't bother with it, we don't see each other on the day anyway. We do occasional romantic things throughout the year so Valentine's Day just goes unnoticed really.

I won't be going anywhere in the evening as seeing lots of couples together just reminds me he's miles away lol. I'm either going on a birding walk on Valentine's or go-karting, pending on the weather :-D

Nah, it'll just be a new bottle of washing up liquid. If you're lucky. ;)

Surely a woman expecting 'gifts' for which in return she is expected to 'put out' has a much more unromantic name normally?:smt083

It is nice to see the majority of the ladies on here regard it as nonsense though, I thought I was the only one judging from some of the conversations I have had with friends.

Hubby tells me he loves me every day. I don't think you can get much more romantic than that. :smt057

Eldest daughters birthday is 14th Feb. We can never calibrate it as restaurants etc. are full of stupid couple cooing after each other.

Valentines day, mothers day, fathers day even bloody grandparents day etc. All invented for the gift/hospitality industries to prise readies out of mugs hands.

the worse thing being the stupid bints who moan you never got me a card etc. err why should I. I married you, don't you think shows that I must love you.

When all of my daughters were much younger I used to get my friend's kids to write valentines cards for them and I'd make out they'd come through the letterbox in the evening before when they were handed over on the 14th. It was hilarious watching them trying to work out who the cards were from, but a great way of cheering up any of them if they were felling a bit down or unhappy about something.

Spend lots of money on something that would otherwise be half the price if it wasnt valentines day, have to be surrounded by lots of lovey dovey people who otherwise never give each other the time of day, have hearts and roses and balloons and cards and jewllery shoved in my face telling me to buy buy buy maria's love.

no thanks. We'll do a nice card for each other, with a nice personall message in it, and maybe go for something to eat in the week...but we do that anyway

every day is valentines day for me, i try and show maria i love her every day and I certainly tell her everyday...why go all out on one day of the year?

Valentines is only comercial if you allow it to be!

Nothing like snuggeling up, dvd, nice food and just spending time together. (If you don't already do that on a regular basis!) Just making time for each other is nice!

I think it is nice to make some effort just to let the other person know that you care but you don't have to go over board and pay silly restaurant prices etc.

I go for it.......why not?

all year round we treat eachother with surprises / thoughtful gifts etc..doesnt have to be expensive, as someone said..a galaxy bar can even be it...just showing you care all year round goes without saying..otherwise...why be in the relationship?....

so...3 yrs...she has had a rome trip....a hotel room in bath (3 floor hotel room with outdoor rooftop jacuzzi! got it free for giving the owner free advertising...suppose to be £350 a night!!,) and this yr its a restaraunt, drinks, and something to wear when we get home :-)

IMO commercial or not, if it makes her feel good then its worth it....and people saying well i treat her right etc all yr round anyway so why bother...well...again IMO that should be standard anyways....so go on lads..spoil em!!

I'm looking after my niece, for most of the day, so my sister and her husband can pack their house up ready for the move.

More than likely will not get drew a card, and really don't think i will get one back. He tells me he loves me more than once everyday and for me I don't need a day for him to prove that he does.

Also will be dropping a card off at my parents house as they got married on valentines day 33 years ago.

Just thought I'd give this a bump. :)

Doubt I'll get anything, but then, I'm only giving things to one person.

Jen has taken the kids to her mum's for the day, and I'm working soon. The kids will be in bed by the time I get home.

There's now some flowers on the kitchen table, with my daughters name in front of them. There's some more flowers on the desk in her room, and a new teddy sat on her pillow holding a card (card doesn't say who its from).

Shame I won't be at home to see the smile, but I think I'd give it away that everything was from me. :(

I'm not bothered about Valentine's day but OH just got me a luvverly bunch of lilies which I love, and wasn't expecting, so it would be churlish to complain.

I can never be bothered with Valentines Day.

Far too soppy for my liking.

There's now some flowers on the kitchen table, with my daughters name in front of them. There's some more flowers on the desk in her room, and a new teddy sat on her pillow holding a card (card doesn't say who its from).

aww cute, does she know it was from you or have you kept it secret still?

She's under the impression that I found a box outside with her name on. I "brought it in" and saw the contents as it wasn't sealed.

I asked her if she minded that I put the flowers on the table for everyone, and the things in her bedroom. She said it was a good idea. :D

Conviently, there was a cardboard box in the lounge that had her name scribbled on it.

I'm undecided. Last year it was just a meal but this year it was this:

Yep, me and Sarah spent the weekend superimposing pictures of each other. He heh. We had a lovely meal in a perfect little restaurant and was at the Eiffel tower for the midnight flashing!

It lights up a sort of yellowish colour when it's dark but then every hour the whole thing twinkles like in the top pic for about 5 minutes!

 A bit of midnight flashing on valentines day?

A couple of years back, I took the Mrs to Paris for her birthday. Had a very nice meal on the Eiffel tower - the restaurant at the top! Book over a year in advance if you want to eat there!!
