View Full Version : Question about lorries

I travel up and down 25 miles of the A12 every day (Oh Joy!). It's one of the main routes to Harwich, with a large shipping port.
On the A12 there are many large laybys and I see many big lorries parked up there, presumably waiting for their rest periods and such to be done.

My question is why do about two thirds of these lorries have their back doors wide open? The rest have them firmly shut. I can see that the ones with the doors open are empty. They even do it when it's pouring down with rain!

Is it some kind of secret code? Have they been robbed? Is it for wildlife to have a dry little rest in?

Help me out here someone

I thought that it was to make it obvious that they were empty, to prevent people breaking into them on the off-chance that there was something of value in them.

because they're the ones the immigrants have just jumped out of

But it seems to me that it's just making them MORE prone to dodgy stuff. not less.

Anyone can get in, can't they?

nope not the law, its to let potential thieves know that your trailer is empty. if its a curtainsider they will normally slash your curtains to look inside, very often they have someone stood by the drivers door with a bat or something, if they see movement in the cab they could turn nasty, golden rule let em have it, thats what insurance is for, one trick from the continent which is gaining favour amongst uk truck thieves is to push a pipe up from under the wagon and up the gearstick and through the rubber gaiter, then flood the cab with anasthetic therby rendering the driver unconciuoness (sp) the continentals often left the driver some money to get home but typically without a truck, trailer, passport or even clothes, in the uk drivers of high value loads often drive the trucks and trailers and with no markings so as not to be too showy, how often do you trucks with cigarette adverts on there sides.

i can see the point, but what if you want to stop & you do have a load? Just open the doors & let them have it? or leave them locked & everyone will know you definetely have something worth nicking

more to do with the fact that cigarette advertising is now illegal.

Nah, more valuable goods in a hard sided trailer. Less valuable in curtain sided ones.

A closed trailer means someone will have to do something to look, then decide if it's worth the effort. An open trailler means you don't have to claim on insurance for a damaged trailer.

Tbh you wouldnt park up in layby with a load on, most guys in layby,s are empty, cos it can cost £13 plus to park overnight on the m,way services and truck stops can be a bit of a rip off as well, see its not all yorkies bars and murdered prostitutes being a trucker you know ;)

Precisely the same reasons why I now never lock my car. There's nothing of value inside, and no personal identifiers, so why have the inconvenience of a smashed window.

I used to park up and open the doors even when loaded ,depending on the cargo, but basically with an empty tilt or curtain sider to avoid the sides being slashed to see what is in it. Trucks on TIR work have to be sealed by customs and the inconvenience of getting repairs is both expensive and time consuming.
When we were on the Middle East we would also run in convoys and park up so that somebody could see the back of your trailer but the most common thing was breaking into the trailer boxes[The boxes on the side of the trailer which held your fridge, water and food plus cooker and utensils]
I can tell of some horrific experiences regarding bandits and Mafia.
It wasn't just villains you had to worry about,in one personal instance I was arrested for kidnapping customs officers who had broke into the trailer illegally while clearing customs in Dover. I was loaded with guns and ammunition from Koch in Germany and I slammed the fridge doors closed on them, drove round the lorry park fast in circles and figures of eight throwing them about inside the trailer before stopping outside the police station and awaiting armed response police before opening the trailer. I will add that I turned the fridge on at 0 Celsius. The police inspector in charge of the incident couldn't do anything for laughing but the customs insisted I was arrested for kidnap and my life was hell in Dover docks until I had my MP intervene

True but also due to the fact that a trailer load of fags or whiskey could be worth a mountain of cash, and they didnt advertise the contents before the ad ban tbh.

I did a bit of continental a long time ago, always remember being warned about the police at the italian border and never to run alone, always wait for a few others and run in a convoy.

Would that not void your insurance if it were to be stolen??

The insurance company woiuld have a hell of a job proving it was left unlocked, rather than the lock was popped/jimmy'd etc.

As long as you still have the key the insurance will normally pay out.

this is why most very expensive loads are run in one hit... or with two drivers.
