View Full Version : Snowboarding - bike kit any good?
I was wondering whether or not my jacket and trousers would do for snowboarding. It's all textile/goretex and isn't too restricting on movement - and from memories of bruises the last time i went, i could do with all the protection i can get :-D
any thoughts? anyone tried it?

I used my winter goretex gloves when we went this year, worked a treat, much better than my specific snowboard gloves are.
We looked at the body armour etc and the Dainese stuff just looked like their motorcross kit with different graphics on it.
I reckon it'd be OK to use your textiles, but I havent tried it.
Just dont break your wrist like I did....

I used my textiles the other day in the snow, I was the warmest of the pack of us :D Mine dried off from fully soaked in a cold garage by the next morning at 7.
Can't see why they would be a problem to use :)

You might get a bit hot in bike gear, we were skiing in Switzerland last week in just long sleeve t -shirts some days.
Too hot is fine - i can always roll in the snow to cool off (honest thats what i was doing... who said i fell over?)
don't see why not! it will be waterproof and hopefully have some padding in the right places! but I wouldn't want to damage my biking kit.
the main thing I would recomend though if thinking about boarding a bit would be to buy some impact shorts! I feel naked without them on. feel a lot safer wearing them and not had a sore tail bone since!

always used my gore-tex stuff for skiing. If it's snowing you can keep the thermal lining in for warmth, and you can take it out if it gets hot. All armoured for when you fall over, and waterproof so you don't get wet pants from sitting n mel****er.

I reckon the trousers and sleeves will be too short. Otherwise probably be quite good.
If you have a full zip together 2 piece, that will even serve as powder skirt - essential I say.
i used my force field back protectot thingumy & skateboarding wrist guards
Cool. I'm gonna give it a go then hire sommat if it proves to be unsuitable. I reckon it should be fine - its proper touring kit, which has recently been in an off so already needing some repairs so i'm not too bothered about a few more scrapes.
Can't see the arms and legs being too short - they're designed to sit on a bike with arms and legs bent. Surely that means they're longer than normal?

skateboarding wrist guards
I have to say this is probably a wise investment if you fall alot, I didnt have mine on when I took my tumble, it was only a little tumble to, but I went down on my wrist and bent it in a funny way.
I havent been to work since 3rd of Jan, I've been in a cast for two weeks and then I had to have an operation to put a plate into my wrist to hold it all together... I dont know if the outcome would have been different if I had my wrist guards on...

Got some of these too. Didn't break anything last time i went but fell over so much my wrists began to seriously hurt. Sometimes it hurt more getting up than falling over.

I remember that feeling, its so frustrating to keep falling all the time, stick with it and you'll find all of a sudden you click with it and you wont fall anymore.

Have you got a TK Maxx near you, we have and their snowboarding gear is £19.99 for trousers and not much more for the jacket !! Well worth the dosh and all named stuff.
Thanks Shellywoozle - i'm just a wee bit skint atm having spent all my money on the holiday! Hence trying to save money using my bike gear.
Fizz - i got pretty good in a week last time i went. Trouble is this was about 5 years ago so i might be back to square one.

I reckon you'll be OK, I hadnt been for a similar amount of time, took me a morning to get back into it, turned out I hadnt forgotten as much as I thought I had.

Up at Glenshee, you quite often see folk wearing their bike kit on the piste. I wear my 'Suzuki Racing' woolly hat with my skiing stuff and there are a lot of 'biker nods' going on, so go for it. You will probably meet some interesting people!

I've seen plenty of people at Glencoe wearing standard Council Issue luminous road sweeper waterproofs before - your bike gear, although it may be a bit clumpy and cumbersome will probably be Ok.
I'd second the suggestion of checking a local TK Maxx before you go though...
Oh yeah, if you are in the alps, then walkie talkies are feckin' handy. Last time I went we had eight of them. Made hooking up with your mates a doddle.

I used my old textiles- too crashed to ride in, but still fine for snow. The knee armour was a gift, I fell down a lot  I wouldn't have worn the jacket though but the trousers worked really well, other than a spot of boot bother.
