I'm 27 and I've spent the last 5 years in the building services sector as a mechanical engineer. I recently lost my job and I'm currently looking for a replacement, but quite frankly, I'm totally fed up with the whole industry.
I've always wanted to train as a pilot, but I recently found out that'll never happen due to what amounts to a technicality on my medical.
I have a BEng in mechanical engineering so my strengths are unsurprisingly technical.
I also have a broad understanding of computers and software, for example I can program, produce reasonable looking 3D models in 3D studio max, AutoCAD, build a PC from components etc. I don't have any particular strength or experience in any one of those above, but I include just to show I can pick up most things computer related that might be useful combined with an engineering background.
Any random ideas welcome!

Triumph are recruiting engineers at the mo, although I think they use ProEngineer (which is pretty intuitive).

A real longshot here, but ICT or DT Teacher?
Salary is much better than it used to be, terms and conditions good, great holidays, always a challenge, job security, transferable anywhere in THE WORLD and you'll never be bored! You do have to be interested in people skills too though. Just a thought....
Try BAe.
Make things that are really loud and can kill people. They are always looking for people with your skills.

You would make a good politician.:D
Make sure you get the right party though;)
I'm in a similar situation apart from I have not YET lost my jobs but that is no doubt yet to come in the forseable future.
Frankly its the kick in the **** I have needed. For a long time I have been fed up sitting behind a desk bored out of my skull but comfortable.
I have a few things in the pipeline that are physically active jobs. They involve working shifts and taking a pay cut.......but hell I'll love my job and thats what I need in my live, I want to enjoy work.
I just hope i'm successful.

More seriously:D
Do you want to stay in the same field or do something completely different?
If you want to change Id try for a good safe job that has a good pension.Train driver is good money but deadly boring.Could you be a copper?Good enough money after a few years,a pension to die for (not literally or you cant claim it):rolleyes:options to branch out into interesting specialities, and no redundancies. When they start to downsize the Met its a sign you should have emigrated.

I'm open to a change, although I'm not really interested in shift work.
And I'd want some job satisfaction so that's train driver out, and I'd like to avoid taking a pay cut too, so that's the police out, anyway.
I think you have to way up what's important to you and what options you have , this will depend what commitments you have
I've worked in IT for 20 years , money is ok and job is relatively safe , however there is a lot of b#lls#it that drives me mad and don't get much job satisfaction any more.
The safe option would be to get another job in IT , however really feel the need to do something different. The plus side would be new challange , enjoy the job you do downside Financial and security.
Really depends on the individual
Good luck , the key thing is knowing what you want to do I'm still not sure at age of 38
Cheers Steveg
