View Full Version : Replacing Chain; New Sprockets Needed?

To be perfectly honest, chain looks like death.
All rusty..
Inthe process of purchasing a scottoiler, which will keep this one tidy..
If i replace the chain, once i get my scottoiler, do i have to replace the sprocket set as well?

If you don't, you'll only speed up the wear on the new chain.

Your choice really. :)

Chains done 9000 miles, looks rusty from the side, but from on top, the links looks fine..
Should i even be replacing it?

If it's only rusty on the sides, give it a scrub with parafin, allow to dry, then lube it up again & take it for a run. That should sort surface rust out.

If you're having to adjust the chain every few days (or every week etc), then it's time to change. Any sideways play, or excessive stretch in the chain, and it needs replacing.

I'd always change sprockets at the same time as the chain. In fact, I just did, to the tune of £135.90 :(

C+S is about £85 from busters i paid before xmas. Still on top of my toolbox tho. And my chain sounds like yours 8.5k on mine tho and it'll be getting a good lubing today.

Unless you have a chain splitter and re-riveter, you won't be able to take it off. Or you're dropping the swingarm out. It's an endless chain. You should be able to clean it well in situ. Take off the plastic cover over the front sprocket too amd clean in there.

I contacted Spannerman (http://forums.sv650.org/member.php?u=3155)about a new c&s set (tsubaki sigma + steel JT), got it fitted in Shirlaws at the major service. Then fitted a Scottoiler and 11k later chain is still good (the old DID managed 18k but was completely f**&ed by then).
Give it a good clean and lube, and you'll see. If you need to adjust it every week, then it's time for a new one.

For c&s you can also use B&C express.
