Looking to give the bike a service - oil, oil filter, plugs and coolant. Is this possible with just the side stand or would it be better with the bike fully upright?

You need to have the bike level and uprightfor best results when you drain the oil and refil it.

for everything else you can get away with it on the side stand but having the bike upright makes it all so much easier.

all the best

all you need to do is put a block of wood/brick under the side stand and it will be perfectly straight.

Do it all on the side stand. Just remember to pull the throttle bar so the bike is upright when you're checking the oil level. That way you'll read the oil level properly.

The sump bolt is on the same side as the sidestand anyway, so it'll probably drain a little faster on the sidestand. Not by much though.

Actually if you try and drain the oil with the bike on a rear paddock stand you miss a bit as the drain plug is at the back left side of the sump and with the rear raised the last bit (and any debris) doesn't drain out. Just remember to pull the bike upright when checking the oil level at the end.

Is there a full walk through talk through of a standard service? Looking to do my first DIY one in a few weeks.

Despite the above thoughts, however you support your bike when you drain the oil a bit will be left, so as long as you move it upright from the sidestand, or vice versa, you'll get out as much as possible and it'll be fine.

In short it doesn't matter, draining on the sidestand is fine. Upright for level check, obviously.

Best thing is to take the bike for a long ride out and then drain the oil whilst the engine is warm - the oil is much thinner when hot so you will be able to drain out more of the old stuff - just be careful of the hot oil when removing the plug

Also whenever I change oil I give the bike a good hour to fully drain - is better to remove as much old oil as possible before you put in the nice new stuff!
