Folks, I know there are a few different posts about this out there but still needing help from those what know!

I have a '00 Sv650 SK1. Tut tut, I left it sitting in the garage for just over a month and didn't turn it over. I know, I know! Low and behold the batt went flat. Thats sorted but my problem is my choke.

It appears to have completely seized and I can't get it on at all, causing it to be a bit tricky to start due to the engine being cold.

Can someone give me step by step what to do to free it?

I'm a complete newbie so pictures etc would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nic

My choke cable has gone stiff but hasnt seized up yet, my throttle cable is sticking also. In my thread about the throttle ive been advised to clean up the mechanism and grease it all, i would reccomend doing the same, im hoping to give this a go in the morning. Il update you when ive done it to let you know if the problem has been solved.

cheers

Remove the choke cable from your handle bar so you can see the end of the cable.
Find a cable oiler or tape a funnel to the end of the cable.
Pour in suitable oil and leave far say 30mins and then try working the cable.
Basically keep doing this until it starts moving.

That's just a quick guide really. Get the cable as vertical as possible so it does not take as long for the oil to run down.

ok, thanks. It has been suggested it may be stuck in the carbs - if so, what would be the process for fixing this?

I was going to typ that bit but that's a little more complicated.

If you follow the choke cable you will see it splits into two and they enter your carbs.

Where they enter your carbs there is a small screw holding the cable in. You need to undo both of these (the front one is a pain in the bum to get to, you may need to remove the carbs).

After removing the choke plungers from the carbs you need to check them for wear and tear on the springs etc and for any gunk that might be stuck to them.
Take the rear one out (easy peasy) and have a look at that and you should get what I mean.

Sorry I'm not the most technical person around here I just know how to do certain things.

Those are the choke plungers where the cables enter the carbs. You need to unscrew the small plate that holds the assembly into the carb and pull it out. Those screws tend to be difficult to remove if they have been in a long time, but its a common cause of poor running so worth doing.

mine dont this, i have a 2001, the choke slider was stuck on the back carb, to fix it i lifted the tank and where the choke cable goes in i pulled the metal bit in and out freeing it up, bit stuff at first but does loosen up. thats only a temperary fix. i will have to get the carbs off and give them a proper clean to get a crap out thats causing it to stick

this is what was stuck on mine.

What i did was -

1. Removed the seat to allow the tank to lift up, undo the plastic pannels at the side of the seat by undoing the allen bolt on either side the plastic panel should swing to the side out the way, then undo the two allen bolts holding the seat in place one on either side. take the seat off and place out the way ( dont want to be tripping over it, not that i did that)

2. lift the tank by removing the two allen bolts at the front of the tankhttp://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff392/chomppy/07_sv650_gas_tank_bolts.jpg you should then be able to lift the front of the tank up. there is a tank stay under your passenger seat pull that out and put it through one of the holes and through the hole the bolt come out from like so -http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff392/chomppy/Tank_UP.jpg

3. locate the choke slider - here http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff392/chomppy/svs_carbs.jpg it might be the one on the fron carb but will look the same if not very simular. when you have found this try moving it in and out and try moving the choke on the bars, keep working it in and out, i used a very very small amount of wd40 under the rubber boot that goes over the mettal tube, this helped free it up so it moved freely, try work the choke on the bars at the same time trying to free it. This should work. if it sticks again so that it revs a lil high once the bike starts then keep in nuetral and rev the bike just below limiter hold for a second and release, this freed it up when it got slightly stuck a couple of days later.

hope this helps

In fairness, the posts were deleted but some guy came on giving me abuse for asking the question yesterday so that's why there was a thread resurrection.

Hopefully this thread will help someone else though because I think it's a fairly common problem in curvy models.

Not sure what that guy was on...

And you're right - it is indeed a common curvy problem.

Some guy was giving MBK abuse for asking a question? What is wrong with people these days.

I missed it, obv.

Primarily caused by rain running down the choke cable from the handlebar, finding it's way to the splitter box, getting inside and then running down the internals of the cable to the front choke plunger.

Ah, that makes sense.

I think mines had been well and truly seized, took my uncle a while to free it up but once he had done it, I had no issue with it for the next 2 years.

Lol cheers, it didn't take that long but I did have to sign up to photo bucket or what ever it's called. Seems as after leaving the bike for a week seems tho the quick fix hasn't fully fixe it, the revs seem to be fluctuating between 1600 and 2000 but only at idol and some times it seems to stay at over 2000 at idol hmm think I'll get the carbs off tomorrow and give them a good cleaning
