Righto folks, calling on your wisdom here
Got someone coming to collect the SV in a week or so, but they're bringing a van to take it away
I've never put a bike in a van before, and tbh I hate the idea of wheeling it up some narrow scaffold plank because i'm fairly certain i'll drop it...8-[
It's tempting to wash my hands entirely of the process and say "what you do with the bike after the sale is up to you" but i'm a nice guy, the blokey is only bringing his missus to help and i don't want to see the new owner screwed over or my old bike on it's side in the gravel, so...
Any tips or tricks on getting it into the back of a transit? best idea so far i've had is to get two planks, walk up the left hand side one and run the bike up the other using gentle clutch control

Go against your instincts - do not offer any advice or help - cos if it goes wrong you will find yourself blamed.
Make sure he brings his own planks too.
How he takes it away is his problem, dont let it have the possibility of becoming yours.

the sterile indifference is strong in this one...
;)
You're probably right, seems very cowardly to run with the money and hide inside twitching the curtains...

3 of us lifted the CBR into a Merc Sprinter when I sold it.

I'd be inclined to help, but I'd let him do the handlebar end of things. I.e he's in control of the direction of the bike, and working the brake lever, that way if he steers it off the plank or drops the bike, well then he cant really hold you responsible can he...

I'd help, but make it abundantly clear to him before you start that it is sold and he has to accept your help if he takes full responsability for what might happen.
I'd be careful about planks skidding left and right too. Maybe load it like this :

(yeah you knew that was coming :))

I would try and get the bike as high as possible before loading it into the van.
My instinct would be to reverse the van up to the kerb or anything slightly higher to limit the angle of the ramp.HTH

Simple answer.
Meet him in your bike kit and after the items are exchanged, jump on the 675 and go for a ride :)
That way you wont get him knocking on your door for help either.

i backed my pickup up to a loading bay for lorries, maybe if you can find somewhere similar but van height. then you have helped and they can do what they like at their end.

So if this thread was posted "I'm going to buy a bike & for whatever reason I need to put it in a van, can't ride it home, any advice?"
As Fizz said let him be in control, just stand the otherside to prevent it falling away from him & your not at too much risk while not being an obstreperous ....:)

675 isn't arriving until after the SV goes:mad:
should be able to find a raised loading bay type structure somewhere, or a few mates to help lift it in...
cheers all
i wouldnt ride it intot the van but push it up the rams
i have done it a few times now, and use a old kitchen side work top upside down, one person holds the handle bars and one and the back puches it up the ramp. the one holding the hanlde bars needs long arms, push the bike up the ramp but dont walk up it, as the front wheel and bars go into the van hold the front brake the one at the back pushing will then hold the bike so it dont fall over, then the one in front gets int the van and pulls the bike in, and the guy behind follows
you get what i mean any way pmsl

I had a video of Blue loading his Mille into a van by himself with a ramp. I will locate it.

I tend to drive the bike up on the clutch while walking along side whenever i have done it in the past and use a nice wide board with someone else the other side in cast it falls away from you.
Having said this if you are not sure about it i would offer to be the guy thats pushing on the grab rail or next to it 'just in case'! That way as others have mentioned, he has controll of the bike not you :)

I would like to add that when the guy came to collect KrazyKim's NSR from my garage I DID give him the use of a bit of scaffold plank I have AND helped out pushing it up the board into the flatbed of the truck - but there were 4 of us.
My original advice is based on the "quiet life" philosophy.
I had a video of Blue loading his Mille into a van by himself with a ramp. I will locate it.
I've done it a few times on my own loading the race ZX10R into the Convoy van and also my CBR600. I have almost dropped the CBR once when the ramp slipped sideways, but it landed on my chest and I was stuck there for 10 minutes with the bike at 90 degrees from vertical with me trying desperately to stop it from falling off the ramp altogether. That was the night before the .org did Silverstone last year and I ended up with a huge bruise from my sternum to my throat after a couple of days. Luckily the bike was undamaged and a passer by walking his dog helped me get it upright and in the van.
I never try to load the van alone now.
the bike at 90 degrees from vertical
Perfectly horizontal then
Or did you mean 45 degrees (rhetorical)
Just as well it wasn't SK walking past, out for a quiet life walking the dog :-dd

I mean the bike was completely horizontal but with me trapped under it trying to stop it from going completely upside-down as it fell off the ramp.
Those CBRs weigh quite a lot when they are pressing on your chest

Nah at that point the bike is, in my opinon, already dropped, anything I am doing is PREVENTING damage.
So would be right in there.
Someone in trouble always outweighs the quiet life philosophy as well.....
