need to replace my Altea (Golf plus with a seat badge) FR - 2L TDI 170BHP for something with a little more fuel economy as the wife is returning to work and has a 70 mile round trip. Must have 4 doors and space for 2 adults plus 1 child space for a holiday luggage and have a little street cred.

My idea so far is a 2L 140 BHP Passat SE - does about 50 combined, 13MPG more than my car so not to bad.

Anyone got any other ideas? can spend upto about 15k. I don't mind if its a year or two old if its a diesel.

Great cars, however fuel economy will be worse than the Altea - I get around 22mpg from my Impreza:roll:

The diesels have not been out for long, and I think they will be outside of budget.

Yep avoid petrol scoobies if you're interested in mpg. but if you're interested in smiles per mile I'd recommend them, I miss my Legacy :smt009

It will take an awful lot of fuel savings to get back £15000.Is it really worth it?

car is on a lease purchase give it back after 3 years or trade it in or buy it. But it needs new tyres (£450 for 4) MOT and a major service and parts changing (some chain I think its the cam chain) so about £1000 in total so swopping for a new car makes more sense to me. Plus at 30K miles per year that she drives for work (does get milage for work purpose) we would get some benefit on a better MPG over 3 years.

Saabs are just plain quirky IMO, very strange.

Honda Civic would be my choice.

Interesting read that from 'Which' definately making me think twice about a Passat now - 3 series looks OK along with the C class - though I will most likely struggle to find one which matches my budget and requirements. Wish it was like the T Ford days where the only choice was black or black.

what they've rated a prius 5 stars how why.

The J.D.Power survey is an industry respected survey originated in the USA. It is carefully designed so that the response from owners gives an overall "satisfaction" rating, it covers all aspects of ownership (reliability, styling, dealership experience, running costs etc).

The table shown is from the UK 2008 survey which I think was from something over 16,000 owners, so statistically significant.

Basically people who "want" a Prius get exactly what they wanted, and they don't go wrong, and the Toyota dealers treat people properly.

Every year the same basic results are repeated, Toyota/Lexus/Honda/Skoda at the top, Peugeot/Citroen/Renault/Vauxhall/Fiat etc at the bottom. It's what the owners think of them, not the journalists on expenses.

i don't see the point in buying a prius you're actually causing more enviromental damage buying one than running a bigger car by far because of the battery and for all that your left with a awfull car as opposed to the competition in the same price range.

That's another issue altogether. ;)

spend some cash getting your existing car chipped and tell them you want an eco tune you will be suprised at your increase in mpg, plus you can always return it to stock. cost abotu £350

Mototech - do you know anywhere that does it? had a browse on the web and dont know who to trust really so any pointers would be great so I can investigate. If I dont get that done I'll leave the whole car thing for another 6 months as the BMW 318d 2008 model does a combined of 60 mpg and 50 mpg around town! It also has lots of nice creature comforts. second hand values at the moment are around 17k - 20k depending on extras and milage.

Take care with your choice of car after your Seat ... You will find it hard to find another diesel [ bmw inc. ] that will have such a brilliant power delivery as that 2.0 pump duise [pd] engine that audi/vw/seat/skoda use.
Make sure & have at least a half day test drive of any future purchase.

ps. I am a Subaru Technician and whilst they are great drivers cars ... the fuel economy leaves a bit to be desired .... mainly at higher speeds ,

Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to go for !

Mototechs sugestion sounds like an ideal solution.
