Alistair Darling has plans to double the road taxfor bikes in 2009, making it more expensive to tax a viable green alternative than it is for some cars.
Changes to the law mean cars emitting less than 100g of CO2 per km would be exempt from paying Vehicle Excise Duty while motorcycles are still required to pay. Even more polluting but low emission cars will still cost little, for example a 1.6 diesel Peugeot 207 cost £35 to renew last year while the anual charge for a typical 125cc commuter bike is set to grow from £15 to £33 in 2009
