Recommend Me A: Camera Repairer

My mother's Canon EOS300 DSLR's playing up - ie not turning on at all. Tried an alternate battery, no joy, it's just not powering up.

So anyone have a recommendation for a repairer/repair service?

Please don't post any 'Buy a new body', 'This is better than that' or 'Upgrade to a shiny xxxx' comments...

Clearly they didn't do much of a job making it in the first place for it to break down after fourteen months and only 2876 shutter impressions... not sure I'd trust them over an independent.

Plus Con-an's pricing structure for repairs is likely to be prohibitive.

14 months? The EOS 300D has been out of production for several years now. My 400d is around that age. May be worth a PM to Samnooshka as she had a 400D repaired a few months back.

There is a Canon Acreddited repair agent in stoke on trent that all of our customers out of warrenty stuff goes to. and hey they seem to do a pretty decent job to be honest, but you are going to be looking at about 160+ in my estimation.. 65% of that is labour charges but parts will still be available we send a few out every now and then.. but we are 3 models on now and they come out roughly every 9 months from canon.

Consumer Protection act covers you for 6 years from date of purchase.

You have to deal with who sold the item tho - not directly with the manufacturer.

the manafacturers warrenty covers defects like the ones experienced.. if its out of warrenty then.. tough i guess.. it seems like the protection is if a product causes an injury or damage..??

seems a bit far to go for a 300d lol, would cost you more in court fees lol

does the 300d have a cr battery in there as a data storage backup ???

in the battery compartment of my 20d there is a little lithium button cell mine locked up once and i removed the battery and the button cell and 10 mins later it was fine.


worth a try if yours has this battery in there.

• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

• If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit

• In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

• After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

still along way to go to get a repair.. if a customer came to me with a camera they bought three years ago and demanded a repair.. well it just wouldnt happen.. id send it to canon.. and they would send it back saying not our problem.. so id send it to stoke.. with a note saying the customers not paying.. and they would send it back saying stop wasting our time.. so who is left to repair it? we have 3 yr extended warrenty policys for warrenty extensions.. i cant imagine they would be around if this CPA was an easy or relevent endevour.. but you would have to be really fussy to take a small claims on a £160 repair, because i can imagine the customer would have to prove that the damages were not caused by themselves, and without taking it apart themselves..(voiding any warrenty present) they would have to pay more to get it evaluated lol,...

Now a motorbike on the other hand or a car.. would work well if it was a write off in 14 months without user fault..

Warranties are "peace of mind", and usually not worth the paper they are written on.

The Sale of Goods act however IS law, and IS enforceable.

As long as there is no external damage to indicate its been dropped etc I cannot see why there would be an issue.

And if there is, well contact your home contents insurer (if you are covered) and report it under the accidental damage section (if you have it) and pay the excess and get a new camera....

Contact canon if camera is only 14 months old they may be willing to contribute towards repair costs
