View Full Version : SV written off - what next?

So my K8 was written off last week and I'm in the market for a new bike.
I am hoping that I'll get some money on top of the value of the bike (which will clear the finance) and was dreaming about a Daytona 675...until I test rode it.
It is a great bike, very quick, very torquey, engine is easy around town and on the M-way, the only thing that bothered me was the riding position. Yes it's a supersport bike so you'd expect to be cramped over, but I didn't appreciate how much I felt like I was leaning right over the front wheel!
I enjoyed the test ride, but am not sure I could live with it doing the daily commute to Manchester everyday and I'm less sure that the wife would be happy perched up on the pillion 'pad'.
So I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a bike I'd really like, at a good price that is a balance between comfort and sporty style.....am I going to end up with another SV?
Don't get me wrong, I loved that bike, but found I was dreaming of different mods, uprating the suspension etc etc, almost trying to get it to be something it wasn't....it's a pity they don't do a premium version that has a decent can, better suspension and other little extras.
Any recommendations on other stuff to look at?
Cheers!

I would have suggeted the street triple, but thats useless for pillions too....

*watches as everybody comes along and recommends the bike they currently own*
:D
You will get used to the being leant over the front position of a super sports bike, but it does take a little time.
Some idea of how much you want to spend might be an idea. Also what about buying a cheap hack for the commute and then getting the 675 as a toy.
One can never have to many bikes
Something like a ZX9 or 10? A little more power than the SV, and still pretty comfy IMO (for both rider & pillion).
EDIT: Fizz, Ha! I don't own a ZX. :D

Sorry, should've mentioned, I prefer faired bikes as most of my miles are M-way.
I am restricted to 1 bike :(
The Daytona was just over £5.5k (08 bike, not yet registered)

I recommend a K8 750 or a CBR600F2 (2002 not F2 gen)!
:p
Actually, I do recommend the CBR. I think it's a bit like a less powerful ZX-9R.

That's part of my dilemma fizz....I like the look of pure sports like the Gixxer and R6, but know that they're not as practical as the SV for the type of riding I do (m-way and city centre traffic). I just think if I get another SV, I'll always be yearning for something else, although I guess that would happen with any bike as you say.

I did think about the VFR800 and the Sprint, but then they do strike me as being bigger, heavier bikes (and more expensive).

Well I really liked the twin on the SV and don't really want an IL4. I thought the triple would be a good compromise between the two and I was impressed with the Daytona, lots of pulling power low down in every gear and you don't have to scream the nuts off it to make it go very quick. I'd probably go for the Street Triple if it was faired, or the Daytona if it had a more upright riding position...maybe the Daytona with different bars would be a compromise (assuming that's do-able?).

Actually I think my GSXR is just as practical as my SV was, in fact its better on long journeys because its more comfortable, also ridden sensibly i.e below 7000rpm its also less tiring to ride along way than my SV was to.
I rode to Scotland and Back for the Glencoe Massacre last year, with luggage....

Why dont you want an IL4, have you test ridden one, have you tried one ? If you dont know what you want, how can you right off loads of bikes by simply dismissing them due to the engine configuration.

I get all of that on my IL4, you just have to get a bigger motor. If you go for 750 or a Litre IL4 you'll have plenty of not more low down grunt than the 675 did you test rode.

i can't imagine why anyone would buy a daytona to do motorway miles:confused:
dunno how all you are but i'm 5'9 and the screen on the 675 directs air straight into my neck, couple that with zero space for small stuff under the seat and a luggage unfriendly exhaust and it's not what i'd use to commute, the suzuki sportsbikes always seem to come top in the tests when it comes to easy going riding positions, pillion seating and luggage options so a GSXR might be a better bet...
if you like the triple engine then i'd say get a sprint or if you're feeling adventurous have a look at the tiger, perhaps even the KTM adventure if you're willing to look at different options, don't dismiss it because it's an "off road" bike, with the correct pilot on it it'll run rings around supermotos on the track or the back roads
but tbh, it sounds like you need another SV:mrgreen:
*watches as everybody comes along and recommends the bike they currently own*
I don't think I'd better suggest a 1981 Yamaha SR250 with MX bars and a flattened seat, even if it has got a nice paintjob

I rode my mates Z750 and although it felt better on the corners than the SV and obviously had loads more power, it just didn't feel as fun as the SV and the power certainly didn't seem to come on until higher revs, at which point I was struggling to hang on!
The Daytona felt stronger around town, with lower revs, even if you were in a higher gear.

To be honest, the main reason for wanting the Daytona is that it looks ace, gets great write ups, was fun to ride (even though the riding position was way more aggressive I'm sure I'd get used to it) and it's a real bargain at £5.5 for an 09 plated 08 bike. The dealer where I got my SV from has a K7 GSXR600 for £6.2k and the K9 SV is £4,900, so I was thinking bike for buck the Daytona is a good deal.

If your talking about the 750 IIRC its group 17, so yes I suspect it'll be a higher insurance group.
I also think you should try a 600 as well. I honestly think you'll be in for a plesant surprise. I've ridden a K6 600 and it wasnt the rev hungry monster that the bike magazines would have you beleive...

Go to another dealer mate - on Autotrader you can see K8 GSXR's for £6.2k. You should be able to get a K7 for a fair bit cheaper than that. George White's are doing the 08 Kwak ZX-6R for £5500, might be worth a test ride?
Or £1 down and 42 months interest-free on a K8 GSXR-1000? :smt041

From what I've seen that is a real bargain for the 675 and the complete opposite for the GSX-R and SV. Somewhere out there, someone else is posting about a bargain 09-plate K8 GSX-R 600 up for £5k vs a 675 up for £7k...

i would have said a VFR as they are a little better designed with pillions and comfort in mind. I cant vouch for the newer ones but my mate's old zx6-r (2001) was ver comfortable for both and he even took it touring for a week in south of france through the mountains with nothing but praise for it.

I got a brand new ZX6r form george whites for 5.5k with extras on 0% and its more comfortable than the SV was, smoother and absolutely flies. IL4's are not the gutless lumps the magazines describe either. It seems as torquey as the SV low down and goes crazy over 10k.

I get the impression Muffles was using that as an example - that there are vastly differing prices in dealerships so decide what bike you want first, then ring round for the best offers.
Don't forget fuel economy - I don't know any middleweight sports or sports tourer that comes close the the SV's 55-65mpg. Most of the sports 600 will be lucky to get in the upper 30s tbh. Maybe that's an issue to you, maybe not but compared to the cost of fuel on my last car my SV pretty much pays for itself on the savings...

In fact on alonger run, i.e motorway milleage the GSXR is better on fuel than the SV is.

I bought a Z750 after my SV650.
The Kwak is a great bike.
Only problem was it was naked and hate the look of the "S" version.
The front susspension on the zed is not great, but add some hagon progressive springs and it is much better.
I have to say though - not good on the motorway above 90MPH - the wind blast is ridiculous.
What about an SV1000S?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, however I accepted an offer of £3,600 for my bike (K8, 7.5k miles) which I think is a good price and I have agreed to buy it back for £1k.
All I need now is a front cowl, lhs lowers, a gear lever and some bar ends.
I was SO close to buying the last black 675, brand new, 08 unregistered, but am happy I'll have my SV back.
Off to the wanted section to blag some bits now!

I have the 08 Z750 - had its 1st Birthday on Sunday :)
Had no problems doing triple figure speeds on it, went right up to Petevtwin speeds :p Larry couldn't get away (was interesting too - he was in 3rd, changing to 4th before I was even out of 2nd :p)
They improved the suspension a bit, but not loads and gave it really nice fueling :)
Get one of these :)

I know!
To be honest, I didn't like the hugger once I had fitted it anyway, prefer the look of the bike without it and the handguards were damaged in the off. I did like the Symtec heaters and there is a hole in the dash where the switch was, but I'm sure I can stretch to another set when it gets cold again!
I've kept the Scottoiler, R&G bungs (just need a new one for the lhs) and the sw-motech rack, so all in all I don't think I'm too badly off. Plus I've paid off most of the finance with the money they've given me so it ain't so bad after all.
Deffo gonna get some new tyres and some Maxton springs for the front end now though!
