Now that we've got a baby, we need to buy a house somewhere. House prices here in London are ridiculous, so we're looking at moving out to the country. We like the South-West and have friends who live in and around Avebury, so we'd like to move somewhere around there.

Marlborough seems nice, but is maybe a bit too expensive for us. Calne looks a lot cheaper. Does anyone know the area and can tell me a bit about Calne. Is it an OK place to live? There's a few other places we're considering like Chips'n'ham and Devizes. Are there any areas that we should avoid?

Unfair!
I live on the North West side of Swindon and its lovely!
Plenty of countryside and good amenities. SQ is just a displaced, miserable Brizzleman! ;-)
More seriously, Calne has high unemployment and a REAL (as opposed to a media driven) yoof problem. Last year the favourite trick was setting fires in the shopping centre and then stoning the fire crews!!!

Yeah parts of Swindon in all honesty aren't that bad, I mean I've been here for nearly 4 years now. Like anywhere there are areas to avoid though.

Didn't know that about Calne though, always thought that was a bit better as it wasn't called Swindon. Devizes is ok, as is 'Nam; but speaking to some of the locals there its all a bit quiet so it depends really on what you want out of your location?

Why's that then? Where else would you recommend?

Alright Leigh... How you doing fella? Servicing the blackbird on Saturday and will be out and about on it again soon if you fancy teaching a young whippersnapper how to handle the beast from Honda

Like Leigh said, unemployment problem and lots of trouble with the local youths!

Everywhere you look you'll always have a bad element and a not so desirable area of accomodation.
The Chippenham side of Calne (on the by-pass) has had a new development of houses recently built, i looked last year and the same developers had built identical houses in Corsham but at £50,000 more for a 4 bed house, to me it say's alot about the area.

As for recommendations:
North Swindon, Abbey Meads, Redhouse, Oakhurst are all new builds.
Chippenham, Cepen Park North and South, Pewsham are all good.
Surrounding areas of Corsham, Box, Biddestone, Castle Combe are all very attractive but you'll pay a premium to live their.
HTH.

Hi Stretch,
It will take someone better than me ;)

I'm out tomorrow on Pete's "Jack Hills" run and next Sat on Moggsie's "Severn circuit" run, so get your backside out and about.

I've had an offer accepted on a house in Devizes. It seems like a pretty good town and the house is a good size, with garage. I expect that I'll be spending quite a bit of time in and around the Red Lion in Avebury, especially as I've got friends who live across the road from it.
