View Full Version : Sky+ box full (instant rewind)

OK many apologies for asking you guys instead of customer services or such like but anyway.
I have my Sky+ box set to automatically manage recordings, I have a few programs on series link and am happy for the old recordings to be deleted whether I've watched them or not, I use the keep function for stuff I want to ..... keep :)
My problem is that with my box always full, I never get to use the pause or instant rewind when I'm watching live TV.
Any recommendations?
TIA

RTFM!

EDIT: No, seriously now...

The Sky+ box (latest generation) comes with a 40Gb hard disk. Tesco direct sell a 1Tb hard disk for £70 or thereabouts. Take the disk out of the external caddy, slap it in the Sky+ box.

Instantly a huge amount more space. :)

RTFM! :lol:yeh but no but....what does it say, manually delete some programs? I'd rather have an automatic solution

So it will cope with that? assuming I do it right  which is a big assumption. And all it will leave me is loads of TV I'll never watch anyway, the same problem once I reach 1Tb and it'll be harder to find the stuff I do want to watch.

You also haven't considered (or didn't mention) the fact that as a new drive is bigger than the old one, generally speaking, it'll spin faster. If it spins faster, it'll get hotter. It's also likely to be noisier than the old disk.

Remember that the Sky+ keeps the disc almost continuously spinning.

This will then make the Sky+ box's internal fan stay on longer (more often than not this stays on permanently too), not only increasing the wear rate, but also the volume.

What I'm getting at, is that you might as well just manually delete things off it. :)

Stick the cr@p you've got saved on your sky+ box on to a dvd. Or if they are films that you have saved, delete them then download them from one of those sites

It obviously isn't ALL you want to do otherwise you would just delete the cr@p on your sky+ box. We are trying to help so don't give it the confused look

Seriously it is, the Sky+ box is plenty big enough to store all the stuff I want to keep, but is full up with lots of programs on series link & I can't delete them fast enough.
Sorry, didn't think  was particularly offensive :smt102  ;)

This is IB after all was just hoping someone could tell me how to set up my Sky+ box to work the way I want it to work i.e. automatically and for all the functions to work.

the only way you'll get the box to do that is to set it to start deleting programmes before the box if full, leaving enough room to use the live pause feature, but i don't think you can do that, so you need to start managing your saved programmes manually so that there's always some free space...

Sorry I'm in a bad mood as usual. If you are serious about not wanting any of the series links then format the hard drive, but something tells me you won't do that ;)

I thought how I would like to use the box was quite reasonable :smt102 Why can't they make it to suit me :)

Don't worry, be happy :D
Nope :) I won't as I like the latest programs to be available if I want to watch them but don't mind if I lose them if the box is full.

The current boxes are 160Gb, not 40Gb. However 50% is reserved for 'Anytime' (which are programmes that are downloaded by Sky onto the hard disk when the box is in standby).

I know that there are instructions on the net for upgrading the hard disk. AVForums is probably be best place to check. There's a lot of threads on there about how to upgrade.
