Hi Folks

i thought i would consult the oracle that is all you guys. Apologies if this has been asked before, have done a few searches but no luck.

I own a K6 Sv650s. Has been stored as per the owners manual since october as i have been overseas.

tried to return it to service today but encountered the following:

all lights indicators work but the engine wont start or turn over. every time i push the starter i just get 1 loud click/thunk noise. have charged my battery with an optimate before i started it.

also, i think i saw the rev counter needle go to 6 or 7 when i turned the ignition on. its only done this once no matter how many times i turn the ignition on and off.

have checked the fuse box - all ok. the alarm system works fine. i get noother abnormal lights on the dash.

bike ran perfectly before i stored it and was serviced just prior to me putting it away!

any help from you guys and girls would be greatly appreciated.

A loud clunk would suggest the starter is stuck.

Check that the battery is connected tightly - the connection can be good enough to light the lights, but fail when under load.

thanks baph - its a quite loud clunk from under the seat.

From under the seat?

In that case, take the rider seat off, and look behind the battery. There's a clear plastic cover on a part there (the starter relay).

Put your hand on that whilst someone else hits the starter for you (you don't have 3 hands :) ). Do you feel this knock at the same time as the noise happens?

If you do, it has a fuse under the cover, check that hasn't popped.

thanks guys - have checked the battery connections - seem quite sturdy.

baph - tried your suggestion - the thunk does seem to come from beneath this clear cover. checked both green 30a fuses in it. look ok! anything else i could try?

check to see if there is power to the starter motor with a mulimeter, should have a 12v supply from starter relay too motor when u press the starter switch.

The clunk is the relay clicking in and out, its sounds like either the Optimate isnt charging, therefore a falt battery, or the starter is jamed. Put it in gear and rock it back and forward, then try and restart. If still no joy, jump start it!

"Stored since October"
Was the battery kept charged during storage or was it allowed to go flat and left that way for a period of time?Batteries hate that, and will never be quite the same again so you might have now charged it,got enough welly in it to work the lights and stuff but not enough to start the bike. You need to jump start it to make sure it all works, then get a multimeter to test the battery and the rest of the circuitry to find out the root cause.
