View Full Version : It still makes that clunking fork noise.

When I bought my SV 5 years ago, I noticed that over the many bumps and on pot-holes on the UK's ****e roads that it made a clunking noise from the front end. I was reliably informed by the many knowledgeable people on here that it was the front shocks/springs that come as standard.
Any how I have just had Hagon progressive springs fitted with fresh oil and it still makes the same noise. So, any ideas any one?!
Does my head in. It's the only thing that annoys me about my bike!!
Cheers!

dunno what causes it but id just say its an sv thing.
Yeah mine does it too, bugs me alot, maybe its bearings of some kind? But im just stabbing in the dark there.
"I think you'll find they all do that Sir".

it really is an SV thing. I've done the whole Hagon thing front and rear, its just made it less of a clunk. On the other SV I've done the headbearings, new forks, different oil, different springs.....and it clonks worse....gah, get some earplugs!
Mind did that, took it in to be serviced by an old man who has been playing with bikes for 50 years and he identified it as (i could be wrong) but the headraces being loose and requiring tightening.
Whatever he did he sorted it and the bike felt much better.

My 05 pointy does it, played around with the forks preload and it does it less (either that or im avoiding the potholes more).
Weird thing is that my sk1 didnt do it at all.
Must be "one of those things"
mine did it to...turned out it was the horn broken off its bracket clunkin against the fairin but i doubt thats the same thing for you cus thats just silly...."just a sv think thing" mate

just fitted progressive springs to mine and its a lot quieter but i think its the speedo mounting bracket that makes the noise or maybe the mudguard. its definatly a plastic knocking tho,

Lots of stuff can do it.
I think the internal seals in the forks move up and down a bit when transitioning from compression to rebound. Pads can rattle in caliper, discs can be loose on rivets (my spare ones sound like a panzer going down the road)
Head bearings yeah, but some still knock even with properly adjusted head bearings.
Happens to me as well and on prev bikes, dunno what it is mayb headstock? as they get damaged when hitting bumps

Damper Rods. They'll make everything bang around.

When I hold on my front brake and rock the bike gently forward it makes a knocking noise I was told this was just the brakes.
Could be the same thing?

Bah!!
Being fat is a bonus, if i ever decide to loose weight then it will be the cheapest 'go faster addon' about :P

Thats my current ethos, at the moment i'm 16.5 stone, I would love to see how much faster I can go when I get to my target weight!!!!! lol
As for the OP......I have the clunk on big holes and small holes. The big clunks sound different and are the usual SV affliction, just have to live with it. The other smaller holes and road bumps are because my headraces are shot (replacing soon).

As said, I was in in-denial mode and not taking the **** really. How can I, I tot up to 19+ stone, I'm the fat fecker. Gawd knows what I weigh with the kit on.

Considering we have done a lot of two up riding I hate to think what the total is with two of us and all the clobber on!!!

I added more fork oil to mine and the clunk went away!
My K5 used to do it.......
Took it to my dealer, (suzuki, not drug), they put different fork oil in, with a "superceded" part number........
Was MUCH better!!

Wow! Thanks for all the many posts!
I can comfort myself that it truly is "an SV thing".
Also, I am not fat, 5'10" and 12 stone, so it ain't that either!
It is a very solid thunk/clunk and sounds metallic to me. Anyway, I have lived with it for 30,000 miles, so having just had new chain and sprockets and a fork springs and oil change, I suspect I will be enjoying the sounds for a while longer.
Thanks for all the informed posts. :p

I read somewhere/overheard/told by man in pub that it is something to do with the big old spacer that is under the springs that reduces the length of the overall spring , so no matter who`s method of spring replacement and technical whizzery you use , the problem will still be inherited but is reduced by varying amounts . Sounds plausable to me .
I avoid the problem by riding a unicycle fashioned from a Tractor Wheel :)
I asked about this when I first got my SV nearly 5 years ago annd was told it was the floating discs. (IIRC I checked on the site at the same time as well and didn't get any negative responces...

They don`t float that much to be heard , they only have a few microns movement and that tends to be more from side to side .
Mine still did it with a SRAD750 front end conversion!

A few microns? That is good and tight. We could only wish for those sorts of tolerances. Maybe a few tenths of a millimetre.
A micron = 1/1,000,000 metre or 1/1000 millimetre.
Cheers :)
