I'm looking for carbon options at the mo. Needs to be quiet though, this isn't a sports bike by any means, a loud exhaust would be wrong. Besides, I want to be able to get into Switzerland on it.

I didn't expect that either. What are they like to ride?

Someone I know locally has a girlfriend who owns one, so I borrowed it for half a day. It handles like a sports bike with a very upright feel, punchy engine in the midrange and enough top speed to get you into trouble. The brakes are adequate (I think they are the same calipers as SV ones) but what really I liked is the practicality of it, which is why I bought one.

Oh, it's ugly alright, but you can't see that when you're riding it. It's my first brand new bike since I bought my Firestorm in 1998, and it's a good feeling. When I've racked up a thousand or so miles I'll write a short review.

Thank god for that, It was hard keeping a secret!

So thats 2 of us now then. Ive got about 500 miles on mine now, and its bloody great! Ive got the option of Scorpion can for it (I couldnt handle twin Ixils) so might get that plus a few bits & bobs which will help keep it cleaner on a ride. I do like the clear Indys Lozzo, look much better than the orange ones I have. Will have to see how much a couple of sets are I think...

Too tall, too bulky, too heavy and even uglier. Plus, they aren't as cheap with panniers and ABS. Also, I haven't read one write up on the V-Strom that raves about it like the reviews of the Versys do.

You've always been allowed to sell original plates, they aren't non-transferable. You never used to be able to transfer one from car to bike before, but this might have changed.

Listen I know a lot of people care what their bikes look like but this is a great ride. It can be ridden like a supermoto, sat forward arms out, or you can sit back on the comfy area of the seat and admire the view. Its so light at speed, and the bars nice and wide so you can just push it into corners.

I have only just started with the bike. There are improvements to come (although its ugly face will stay)

I think it's good you have gone for something different, because it suits what you want to do with it-as appropriate as someone buying a race bike, and actually using it on track....

I have a road-legal trackbike, but it's crap as a roadbike now it's had new bodywork and a single seat. I keep a variety of bikes - one for road, one for track and a small winter hack for pootling around locally that I don't mind getting knocked about a bit. The Versys is the road bike, it won't be going on track and the panniers will be useful when I go shopping at Sainsbury's.

I wouldnt be surprised if Honda looked to do something like this. I have yet to find anyone who rode the V make a bad comment about it from a handling perspective. For some they have said that they wanted more power but for me its spot on. I need to fix my annoying fairing buzz (need some adhesive foam padding) but thats about the only criticism I have at the moment...

I was thoroughly impressed with my topbox a few days back-had forgotten to pick up basics-vodka, wine, diet coke, milk, so nipped into the shops and loaded up my topbox-thought I'd really notice a difference with so much stuff in, but nothing. Fabulous things, and it takes the run of a key to remove it if I want to ride without it.:D

I've always liked the look of the Versys because that chunky mushroom headlight seemed to suit that sort of bike nicely. The rest of the bike is unquestionably modern and smart looking too. It's just a bit "different".

Looking good, does it feel less or more powerful than the SV?

Difficult to say the the moment, Tim. I'm running it in at a maximum of 4 to 5K revs for the first 500 miles, then 6 to 7K for the next 500.

I do believe in running bikes in properly.

It's certainly not lacking in midrange grunt, that's for sure, but I'm not expecting it to be on a par with the SV for overall power. However, it does handle sweeter than both the SVs I've owned.

Tim in Belgium
02-03-09, 10:08 AM
I thought that you may be running it in after posting.

Out of interest were your SVs on standard or modded suspension? And is it better handling on all roads, or just the twistier bits (B-road type)?

rob13
02-03-09, 04:35 PM
Tim, personally I think theres very little between the V and the SV in terms of power. 5bhp is probably quite difficult to suss out, although seat of the pants it does feel very strong in the midrange. It pulls well, into 3 figures but have no idea of top speed as I havent gone that far with it.

Suspension wise, there is notably less dive at the front end, the front brakes seem on par with the SV however the rear brake seems to be a little vague. It tends to soak up bumps easier and has less kick from the rear.

Im getting my first few bits and bobs this weekend to start the farkling process. Both cosmetic and purposeful mods. Watch this space...

I like it, I've been on the prowl for 'something' suitable for going touring on that won't bust the bank (and maybe even allow me to afford to keep the SV too...).

Can't justify paying for a V-Strom with an SV in the garage, VFR's & Sprint ST's out of my budget, I'm still pretty inexperienced on the grand scheme of things so I shouldn't be looking at things like ZZR1100's and Blackbirds just yet I don't think.

Looks like I'll add the Versys to the Test Ride list alongside the big 1250 Bandits then!

It was the seat of the pants feel I was after, as you say numbers are a little meaningless, and nice to hear the comparison with SV's suspension, I can certainly imagine it's more "flickable" too.

The bars are very wide so it makes turns easy. Im a little apprehensive about the tyres as a lot of people have criticised the D221s saying theyre poor in the wet. It was soaking the other day so I wasnt planning on pushing them but didnt think they were as bad as the oe tyres on the SV.

The only thing I will say is that because of its lack of good looks, im not sure Ill bond with the bike like I did with the SV. Im hoping these few bits which I add to it will improve it for me but the SV never looked dated. Even now, theyre great looking bikes and itll be a shame for Suzuki to bin them.

If it was pure asthetics I was going for, it would be a Gixxer or an R6, however neither tick the boxes which I need them to.

That's where you and I differ. For me it's not the looks it's about the way it rides.

I've been using the anaolgy of choosing between a fat burd who's great fun and makes you laugh, or a thick supermodel with terminal halitosis. I'd choose the fat burd every time.

That started the day before I could legally ride it on the road. It's now wearing a Scottoiler with touring resevoir.

Today I ordered one of Speedy's lowering kits and a flat-foot for the sidestand, then I got on the phone to Motobins and ordered some Hepco and Becker engine bars for it. Next on the list is a hugger and fenda-extenda followed by handguards and heated grips, then a Baglux cover and a sat-nav mount from the genuine accessories catalogue.

Nicely

Have been out to play on back roads and it soaks up the bumps far better than any SV I've ridden. Obviously I haven't really pushed it yet but first impressions are that it feels sweeter all round.

The panniers are big enough to take 4 washing machine loads to the laundrette to use the tumble dryers, with some room to spare. :p

How much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.

rob13
05-03-09, 09:51 PM
Lozzo, ive had the bike in a few bits today, removed the screen and side cowls to get to the annoying panel buzz which no doubt you will experience soon. There are 2 pieces of plastic on the cowling which at around 3-4k will resonate and annoy the hell out of you. A warranty fix involved putting foam pads between the two but because one of the pieces is quite sharp, it has eventually worn through the pads. I fixed it by cutting up some of those oxford sticky pads which come free with tankpads and cut them to shape of the foam. Placed them on top and its stopped the buzzing and hopefully the plastic cutting into the foam.

I think I prefer the bike with the standard screen, flipped upside down. The Vario is a bit IAM for me so I might take it off and only using when touring. I havent had chance to try the standard screen yet though as the bolts on the Vario are too long (and the nuts are closed)

Picking up a set of KTM handguards and an Ermax Hugger for it tomorrow and Saturday I am looking at a Scorpion exhaust. :D

The exhaust I'm not at all bothered about, I really like the standard one because it's different.

Handguards and a hugger are on my list of must-haves, along with Honda genuine heated grips. I tried some fitted to a VFR the other day and was most impressed. Handguards will probably be those Acerbis Dual Roads or KTM.

I always wear ear plugs so I probably won't hear it.

I too wear earplugs all the time but find that its the rattling that cuts through the silence.

Oh and feel free to plagiarise anytime you like :D
