i changed my oil and filter today, when tightening my new filter up i dented it in several places (only had chain type oil filter remover to hand) will this effect how the filter works or should i be on the safe side and put a new one on and use a strap insted

I'm not sure, depends on the depth of the dents etc.

Why use a wrench to tighten it? Hand tight is fine.

the manual says to turn it 2full turns after the seal makes contact, only managed 1and a half

If it is dented, there is a chance there could be distortion that could weaken the seal. for the cost of a few quid change it before you run the bike.

I echo YC's comment, filter only need to be tightened by hand, never with a strap/chain etc. put a bit of oil on the seal, tighten till the seal mates against the surface and then half a turn.

do you reckon i'd get away with changing the filter without loosing all the oil cuz ive not got any more oil

Clean around the filter and catch it in a clean pan.

Tilting bike backwards slightly may help.

ok well ive got about 1.3l of oil left in the new stuff i got, ill go out and get another filter an another litre of oil and just make up the rest from whats in there now, unfortinatly i've got to use the bike, got no other mode of transport, its not to badly dented just not quite how it should be. luckily only got to do about 5-10miles to the local shop.

4 bikes and you need to use the one with questionable oil integrity... :-P

I've only ever hand tightened Oil Filters on cars but I've also read using the Oil Filter Tool (as in the Handbook and downloaded Service guide) that you should mate the gasket then give it 2 full turns. Why is this?

The manual had me scratching my head too. I am guessing that there is something different about the OEM filters like a much thicker gasket when the manual was written. It is a bit of an oddity.
Most filters have the tightening instructions on them or on/in the box. Those are the only ones that matter.

Cheers

wrenches to remove the stubborn thing but only hand tight to fit a new one, i always do my own and have never had any leaks.

Well, that does seem a bit odd... The filters (not OEM) that I am using specify 3/4 of a turn which is by no means tight, but there is not a hope in Hades of them going 2 turns. They only need to firm not tight.
