Now i've never been keen on winter maintenance, Fizz does most of the stuff with my bike. In fact i haven't used the bike since about October, apart from 2 days in December just so i don't have to look after it.. Imagine my suprise when i opened the garage this morning to find this. It appears i may have let it get into a bit of a state

I did use it all year round for the first three years so it was never gonna look mint. It's just this year i couldn't be bothered to ride it.

Ouch.... how are you going to fix that?

Poor bike. This is why it's better to keep on top of things. It'll take a fair bit of work to get that back to clean and usable, not to mention you may end up needing to replace things like nuts/bolts/chain. I'm surprised the wheels went round.

Take one rag, one bottle of paraffin and one Fizz and it'll be sorted in no time.

You want to inspect it int he flesh before yuo make an offer like that ;)

It'll take alot of time and money to make that bike look mint again trust me.

Chain is almost presentable now. Took 30 minutes of scrubbing with parafin and a toothbrush. Its been relubed again and TBH the whole bike doesnt look so bad now its had a wash. I need to check the chain for tight spots though...

All we need to do now is to work out why its not running on both cylinders properly.... fresh tank of fuel and plugs out and clean and take it from there me thinks..

Bikes done nearly 38K so its never going to look mint now...

The Ducati's not quite that bad but i haven't touched that since about September, so it's not shiney clean either. Although that never does get ridden in the rain and certainly not in the salty winter months.
I don't really have a favourite, it's horses for courses, different bikes with very different capabilities and riding styles.

After an hour or so's worth of scrubbing this is what it looks like now. Apologies for the cacky pictures I couldnt be a*rsed to get it out of the garage again...

Bike...

Chain, cleaned, lubed and then wax over the top after Liz took it for a little ride to get the chain a litlte warm.

No tight spots on the chain and rollers look OK. Needs keeping a close eye on though.

Well I've just eaten a nice big slice of Liz's home made chocolate cake. Theres a beef caserole in the slow cooker that smells gorgeous and she's said shes going to make pancakes later on as well.

TBH its nice to get outside and start fiddling with the bikes again. I managed to ride the SV from the road back into the garage again my hands getting stronger and I'm begining to see now that riding my GSXR again is a possiblity.

No, i don't think i've opened the door since i last put the bike away in december. Even when you do open the door it's so crammed full of bikes you can't really see the bikes clearly anyway.

Looks a lot better. I'd have the left side spindle bolt off and the flappy thing for a clean/polish, it's a bit of an eyesore, and then I guess I'd wonder what it's like beneath the fairing, and whether the front downpipe is gathered up in a pile at the bottom of it :)

I'd probably ride it into a bath of ACF50 too so it's not going to get any worse :)

How were the brakes?

fizzwheel

How were the brakes?

Stiff. I'm inclined to take the calipers off and clean them properly TBH, Rear brake was OK, but the fronts definately feel like they're dragging.

Yep LHS rear wheel nut needs to come off as do the chain adjuster guide and be given a good clean.

You dont even wanna see what the downpipe and the oil cooler look like ;) As for underneath the lowers, ditto... engine casing paint gave up long ago and is merrily bubbling away to itself. But last time I was in there I coated the whole thing with ACF-50 under the fairings so I dont really want to disturb it...

It wasn't the dirt so much, it's definatly been worse. It was the state of the chain that was a bit of a worry.

I'll try harder next time:D

Yep we got that out of the garage looked at the chain and were like

"oh f*ck thats bad"

I dont care about cosmetics on Liz's SV as she commutes on it and if I kept it clean I'd be washing it every day with the amount of miles she does.

Its a very good example of what salt does to a bike when you use a bike on a salty winter road and then dont clean it before putting it away...

my excuse is that I havent been able to do anything bike related since I broke my wrist at the begining of Jan, so its been sat there festering since just before new year...

must admit Fizz, for the first time in two yrs there was rust on the black SVs chain when i brought it out of the shed a week or three back....all because I didn't clean it much after falling off it in Sept, and riding it infrequently since and leaving it to rot. Even after scrubbing it, and lubing it regulary over the last couple of weeks its still got it in places. I'll just have to kick myself into action and tend to it better like I used to.

fizzwheel
01-03-09, 09:52 PM
Thats the thing, it only takes a short period and thats it the rust has got at it and once its set in you'll never get rid of it unless you spend money and time on it.

With Liz's SV I go by the Yorkie Chris principle. i.e. I'm not fussed if its dirty as long as its mechanically sound.

I had a good look at the chain it just looks like surface rust on the side plates. The scotoiler seems to have looked after the rest of it. Most of the rust has come off, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it. Its not quite ready for riding yet as its only running on one cyclinder so I need to have a look at that and I really need to get the calipers off and give them a clean to.

Yes it is, well spotted. Its minus its wheels at the mo and has a broke front mech shifter boss. I want to get it back on the road, but I am lacking motivation for it. But I can't for some reason bare to part with it.

This is how it looked before I stopped using it
