View Full Version : Chain and Sprocket Advice please
Have done a search on here and am still at a loss as to what i need for my K2 650.
Was looking at Tsubaki chain and JT sprockets. But after trying to find something suitable i am confused by this site...
http://www.bandcexpress.co.uk/cgi-bin/bc_page.pl?cat=CH-RD-TSU
...and don't to get the wrong chain and sprockets for my bike.
I think i read somewhere that 110 links is standard but how many teeth do i need front and back. Examples of suitable chain and sprockets would be perfect.

Hey binky. On that site is chain a sprocket sets. If you hit Drive kits and select Suzuki scroll down to sv650 and what you need will be there. There are a few choices and all of which will be the spec for the SV.

110 for the naked I think not sure about the faired (possibly a bit shorter). I did a thread on this a week or so ago
Are Renthal sprockets worth the extra money or would just normal steel sprockets be more advisable???
Would something like this be ok???

If you're getting a top notch chain I'd be inclined to go for the best sprockets too. If your sprockets **** up then so does the chain and vice versa (I tink)

That looks cheap for tsubaki. I was looking at that price for DID but I think tsubaki are much better.

Just ordered these thanks to someone on here posting the link. I just phoned d&k.
I would not touch tsubaki again, I have them on both my bikes. Big bike has the plating fall off it after a 1000mile or so, and the one on the sv has a seized link after 5000mile.
Always been DID or AFAM kits before.
Alloy sprockets look cool as feck and weigh nothing, but wear quick and i have lost a few teeth on them before. Stick to steel.

Binky, with the sort of mileage you do I'd go for steel sprockets not renthal.
Check out the cost for a OEM replacement kit. May be comparable to aftermarket stuff and the standard stuff is good.
108 links.
Do you ride it flat out all the time? If not, then lowering the gearing slightly will give you more ooomph. Putting three teeth on the bake would do, 47 then, but the chain may not be long enough. I made the mistake of buying a 110 link chain to go with my 47 and it used up nearly all the adjustment straight off. Or go for a 14 tooth front. Arguably wears the chain quicker. When I fitted one to mine I did seem to be tightening the chain more often.

110 links for the naked pointy, 108 for the faired pointy. I don't know about the curvy.

Steel sprockets will last longer than Renthal - I've tested that fact, and steel sprockets don't look as nice, but get me an extra 5000 miles.
I'm not sure on the number of teeth, but I think the faired pointy is 14 front 44 rear.
As suggested above, use the Drive Kits section of B&C, I did that & have steel sprockets on still. Baring in mind I'm on stock gearing, the chain had maybe 15 links removed from it & thrown in the bin because they were surplus to requirements. The chain will be long enough.

These were some of the ones i looked at but was wary that they were soo much cheaper than any other sets i've seen.
Does anyone know if they are anygood? No dramas with short life, snapping or stiff links...?

I was thinking about changing the gearing slightly to give me more ooomph but am actually quite happy with it at the moment and have a track day booked soon so would like to keep the top end a little longer.
If i were to change the teeth on the sprockets how do i do it? All of the spockets i've seen mention nothing about the amount of teeth or different teeth options...
Thanks for all the advice so far btw. :D

Mine's fine after 10k. They last ages if looked after. And if you're fussed about gold plating then you're a bit of a girl really :-P

Go for JT sprockets and a tsubaki chain, O rings work fine if you maintain it. Gold sideplates will not make your bike faster.

Fitted for £40 today. £104 total kit and labour. Well happy.
Had checked the front sprocket last week and it was badly hooked compared to the normal looking rear. Was suspicious it had not been changed. Made a point of telling the guy this morning that I had checked the front and had seen it was hooked.
Sure enough when i went to collect it, they had had a right go at it. Hefty airtools did not get a look-in so it was in with the burning torch and a 2m breaker bar.
Their opinion was it had never been replaced. (Over 20k on the bike)
Last kit was fitted by a local bike shop, kit and parts for £200. "Stealers" right enough. Typical Glasgow standards really.
Might want to nip open yer front cover to take a peek next C&S time.

Binky that 50 set from dk is a standard did chain and jt front sprocket for sure. Not sure on the make of the rear but I will let you know when it arrives. Due to come Monday. Look for the thread started by dappad as he was the one who found it.

£89 for an xring D.I.D chain and steel sprocks sound about right? Not sure if it's a 'heavy' one though
