View Full Version : Something in eye

I have had something in my eye since about 12 last night, I've slept and cried since and it still hasn't come out, I think it's possibly just an eyelash but it's round the back of my eyeball :( If it was round the front I could get it out but it ain't showing any signs of budging!
I'm just planning on leaving it to work itself out, hoping it does, am guessing that's ok to do. My eye was a little red this morn, don't want it to get too irritated...
Usually these things are only in for a few minutes not half a day!

Can we take bets on how long it takes to come out?
Hope it does soon! So I win my bet of 2 days.

Try getting it with the corner of a piece of kleenex.
Be warned, I once had an ingrown eyelash and needed to yank it out with tweezers.

the enzimes in your eye should break it down eventually. Don't rub it though.
Just keep an eye on it!

ouch, feel sorry for you.
A few years ago I got an FB well and truly in my eye and after 3 days went to A&E (Doesn't help that daughter works there)
Well at triage, the nurse dropped some gunk to anaesthetise it. and 10 mins later I get to see the consultant. Would I mind that he has some students.
What is wrong with you, I have a foreign body in my left eye.
So he has a look, then invites all his students to have a look.
Yes mr Wilkinson, there is definitely something there, but where did you get the drops from. Your triage nurse applied them. Then a 5 minute rant to his students about why they should not apply the drops to people complaining of something in their eye.
What would you like me to do he says, take it out I reply.
So the most disconcerting experience of my life, concentrating to keep my eye open against the natural reaction to shut it tight as I see a needle approaching. instant pain relief as whatever it was was removed.
But sod all pain compared to that when I had a welding flash many years ago.
Now I do feel sorry for a guy I drink with, 30 years ago, he was doing a bit of DIY and hammer/chisel on some stone whilst his daughter watched. off flys a splinter from the mushroom head formed on the chisel and embedded in his little girls eye.
It is still there today, the hospital tried several techniques to remove it and finally concluded she was better off with damaged eyesight in one eye than non. My chisels get taken to the grindstone first sign of any deformation to the head.

Get yourself down to A&E
They may say that its nothing - but better to waste an hour or so of your life and a few minutes of their time with nothing wrong than let it go bad.

my dad has a bit of brick floating round in his eye. Has done for years.
Stop playing with it, and refrain from poking your finger in it, you'll only make it worse, and don't be doing the old wives tale of dragging the top lid over the bottom one, you'll be introducing more, and scratch your eye

if anyone gets anything in their eyes at our works, it's straight down A & E. Better safe than sorry. I could tell you the story about a guy I once met who's eyes became sore one day, he went to bed but could not sleep due to the pain. He took loads of pain killers so that he could get to sleep and decided that if his eyes were the same the following day he would go to the doctors. When he woke next morning his eyes weren't the same, he was completely blind, and he has been ever since.
Moral - why chance it!
Just keep an eye on it!

*shudder* I hope that never happens to me..ergh!
MissYC: It should work itself out. Try not to poke it or rub it. Blinking lots might help it work its way to the front but if you're that worried then it might be worth taking a trip down to A&E as others have suggested.
Better to be safe than sorry right?

Oh my days, Kate cracked a joke out!
Check it out down A&E, losing your sight is not a good thing, I lost my sight for like 2 hours and it was amazingly difficult to do anything, utmost respecc to those who have to suffer.

Cheers for the replies guys and gals.
It's not really causing me pain but I can feel it rubbing every time I blink, and now its making my eye water a bit. Really bugging me now!
I'd rather avoid A&E tbh.....SpeedyClaire might be along soon lol!
p.s. Liking the joke Kate but don't give up the day job :-P
Eyes are awful things. My cousin was removing bathroom tiles last year only instead of using a proper tool she used a kitchen knife...now I won't go into detail as it still makes me feel queasy, but its safe to say she looked that photo on the previous page, and credit to the docs they saved her eyesight.
Go to A&E, they'll get it out in no time.

Gah, I don't want people fiddling with my eye! Gah, perhaps I'll just have to bite the bullet and go...can I leave it a couple of days and see what its like after that or is it just not worth it?

Go, honestly, they'll probably wash it out, but you may need fluorescein to visualise any damage-that's a dye they put in (painless) to show up scratches, etc.

Thing is, I need to make the most of my time this evening as I've got work to do for tomorrow so I can't afford to sit in A&E for however long I have to :-(
My mate says whenever she gets stuff in her eye she uses eyewash which works fine, could I give that a go or is it better not to mess...

Get yourself some optrex and give your eye a bath two or three times a day to make it feel better. If its still bothering you in a couple of days, go to the doctor and they'll refer you to the hospital if need be.
I had it happen a few years back, went to the doctor and he sent me home with advice to use optrex, saying to go back in two days if it was no better. The optrex made my eye feel really soothed and less irritated and then I got referred to Frenchay and they sorted me out!
Hope it feels better and gets sorted soon and try not to rub it or move your eye around. It'll either work its own way out or you can have it taken out.

Well I won't be able to get ther till after 6 as I have lectures till then, I'm still reluctant to go. As I've said I'm not in pain. I might ring up for an emergency appointment with the doc tomorrow.
Thanks for the helpful advice everyone, much appreciated.

It's really best to pop down to A&E, a couple of hours with a good book is a small price to pay for peace of mind, its not like a cut, you cant see what's rubbing or what its doing to the surface of your eye.

The worry is, that if you do have something, it *could* scratch your eye more leaving it in. You can try yourself flushing it out, but tbh it's easier when someone else does it.
If it's been there over 24 hrs with no miprovement, I'd get seen. It's not in any way an emergency, just to prevent any damage. Have you done anything recently where you could have got something flying into it, like dirt/stone/a chip of something?

Go to A+E babe, I know it's a bad time but it's not worth the risk. I should know I've had loads of crap in my eyes, it always hurts and the damage shows from time to time.
Aber is pretty windy and there's usually some fine dust/grit floating about just to get you when you least expect it.

I'd go to a&e-honestly, if it was a bit of grit it could end up scratching your eye and hurting even more in the long term.

It's getting sore now, reddened eyeball and bottom lid :(
The only chance I have tomorrow to get to a&e will be after 1 in the afternoon, dammit.

Wash your eye out with warm/lukewarm water, as in really wash it-using a syringe would be the ideal, lifting up the upper eyelid and seeing if anything is stuck there. When I had something in my eye they used 3 bags of sterile water to wash it, time and time again. Even standing under a lukewarm shower with your eyes open if you can manage it!
That'll so the same as the optrex-or use an egg cup and wash wash and wash again. If it's still sore tomorrow, get to a&e.

I had something irritating in my left eye a few weeks ago. Initially it looked like an eyelash, but after pulling over 4 inches of the thing out of my eye it turns out it was a hair! I could feel it behind my eyeball when i pulled it out, was actually quite a nice feeling :D

I get stuff in my eye a lot. Occupational hazard.
Ironically the worse one happened because I was wearing goggles.
Cutting heavy steel mesh in a trench with a grinder. Once finished I took off the goggles and a lump of still hot metal fell on the front of my eyeball and stuck there :(
That night I'd promised to go with the wife to a concert and spent the whole time gritting my teeth. Two days of being hard (soft in the head more like) and i went to a&e. A nice lady sat me down with a numbed eyeball and scraped the bloody thing off with a blade thing which I had to watch coming as it was stuck right over the hole in my eyeball. A week after and I still had pain. Off to proper eye hospital where another nice lady ( tiny asian lady) used a huge magnifying glass and tiny tweezers to get rid of all the rust particles that the previous nice lady hadnt spotted.
Dont muck about. Go to hospital :)

Having had two painful experiences with my right eye I can sympathise with how you're feeling!
One was a five a side football, which bloomin well hurt, I screamed like a girl when it hit me, but only because it reminded me about the time when I nearly lost my sight when I got hit in the eye with a squash ball.
My GP said that a squash ball is the perfect size to fit in your eye socket. Never played squash since.
But take everyones advice and go and see a Doctor. A mate of mine had a grass seed embeded in his eye, similar symptoms to yours.

Ooh could make you cringe more.
In the waiting room for the tiny lady a lad next to me had his eye bandaged up.
It turned out a bristle from a powered wire brush came off and pierced his eyeball from front to back and it stuck out between his eye lids when he closed his eye.
I was horrified but apparently he'd been told they would get it out and his sight would be fine!

Eyes are a pet subject with me as I had a detached retina about 2 years ago that had to be operated on urgently. When you are faced with potentially going blind in one (or more eyes) it makes you realise just how valueable and precious your sight is

Deffo go to a&e now and have it looked at. If your vision is going blurry it is best to just get it looked at asap. No horror stories like you're going to go blind or anything, but you don't want to leave something in there that is having any negative effect on your eye and vision.

Well went to a&e, only had to wait an hour... chap did some eye tests shone lots of lights into my eyes. He then said he was going to talk to his colleagues about it. Meanwhile I was told to stay put. They were having a huge shuffle around and then someone else wanted the room I was in so I was asked to move my chair back and a curtain was drawn in front of me...how rude lol. Was amusing watching the doctor trying to peer round the curtain and find me though
The 2 docs told me to lie down and shone yet more lights into my eyes and then tried to turn my eyelid inside out to have a looksee under it. Well my poor eye was having a rough time by this point and was slightly fed up of being poked and prodded so I had to turn it inside out instead. After much umming and arrring a little white spot was found, apparently just like a normal spot but in the inside of my upper lid! Told to wait 48 hours to see if it clears up and come back if not.
What I don't get: how come something definitely landed in my eye while I was on the fields and now I have a spot. I asked if it was possible I had something in it which had caused the spot but they don't think so. Bizarre!
So basically I have to grin and bear the irritation. I can see fine so that's ok, as long as it doesn't go sore and watery like last night
