View Full Version : popping like crazy on takeoff

Took a good few tries to turn the curvy over this morn and a good while to warm up. About 10mins in to the journey while taking off from stationary the exhaust would pop like crazy and be very sluggish on acceleration. Got to a shop and pulled in and while looking around it, it died. Turned off the lights and suprisingly she started pretty swiftly so off i went. Rode the rest of the way with the lights off as i thought it might be a weak battery after the initial few startup tries and it was fine. Any idea's? Was out for 3hrs in heavy rain yesterday in case that matters...
Have my test tomorrow so it has me worried now..

The usual....front spark plug well full of water. Clean, grease, pipe cleaner through drain hole, fit fender-extender.

Have a fender extender on already. If it was the front spark well full of water, how come it didn't happen yesterday when it was raining, only today (its dry out). And once i restarted it after it died when i pulled in it then ran fine...

Yeah....you're right. It'll be nothing to do with that at all, and will be something really complicated. Probably.

Whilst riding flash your lights with the pass button, does it cut out?

Relax with the sarcasm...just trying to figure it out...like why it didnt immediately happen considering today is dry out, and when it did, why it only lasted for a few mins...
There only questions lad..;)

Because it sat in the garage damp overnight and this penetrated the plug / lead. Running it then stopping for a while allowed the heat from the engine to dry things out enough to let it run ok afterwards? For the effort involved, checking the front plug is a good start.......

;) Thanks. Wont have a chance today and test is tomorrow, but considering it ran fine for over an hour after it happened i should be ok, right?

Just had another though, it could have been dew related as it was damn cold last nite, perhaps some damp got in the carbs etc, see how it reacts over the nxt day or so.

My test was yesterday, when i turned up they said, ohh yea, sorry we canceled you , but we'll get you another date soon.... v nice of them tbh

Yeah thought it might be due to the cold/damp alright but its just funny how it happened 10mins in to journey and then disappeared after i pulled in and it died and i left it for a few mins..

Hmm..maybe, but it didnt really feel like a stuck/partially on choke to be honest

mine was a real b*tch today too, sounded awful and would cut out as soon as i pulled the clutch in :( the choke didn't help at all, i would have put it down to water in cylnders but it had been covered and only used in the dry before, its fine now anyway after starting an hour later the choke worked and ran like a dream.

Actually, i had a very similar problem this AM, but im putting it down to not having put PRO Fst in the tank the last time i filled her, and my Carb heaters are shot, i bet when i get on her this evening she'll be running perfectly, it's the oddest thing ever, i'll drive her for 2 or 3 miles and then stop, turn it off and start it again, and it's back to it's normal self ..prob weather related i'd say, hope your test is going ok !!

Could it have been the battery? Went out today to warm up/practice before my test and she wouldnt turn over. Had to whip the batt out and stick it on the optimate for 1 1/2hrs. Stuck it back in just as i had to leave and started first time no problems. Half way through the test it started doin it again a little, with it spluttering a small bit coming to a stop and hunting around idle a bit when stopped. Again, it seemed to stop when i turned my lights off during the test (left the parking light on, so he would think my lights were on from behind) and it seemed to go away. Have had reg/rec issues before and kinda sorted it by wiring from the reg/rec directy to the battery, as was seen in a thread here, but maybe that aint doin the job fully...
Oh, and i passed..yey :D

well done on passing, i passed my theory for my car licence today :)

i have a k3 pointy sv and that pops like made very now and then on the over run, could this be the throttle balance, just found out its not been done since it was new, and its done nearly 13000 miles????

It's been cold hasn't it. You sure it's not just your carbs icing?
Wait to see if it does it on a warmer day, I'm sure the bike is fine
