View Full Version : Why did you choose a naked? or Why did you choose a faired?

This isn't about which is better, it's about why you personally chose one over the other and what the advantages and disadvantages are of each one in your opinion.
I always had my mind set on a faired, but now i am considering a naked since i may look into getting a street triple after the sv, and i seem to like an upright position.

Why did you choose a naked/faired?

I have faired bikes for some wind / weather protection when touring.

I really like the look of naked bikes but I spend 90% of my time on motorways, so it had to be faired for me. And I really want a Speed Triple too

Faired, because I dont like how naked bikes look.

It was the wind protection for me too. If I didn't use the bike for commuting or long distances though I'd probably go for a naked cos I like the look of naked bikes.

I like the way the faired version looks over the naked version, plus I wanted more wind protection when doing a bit of speed

Saying that, most of my ride is slow speed town stuff so a naked would be better - turning circle and seating position. Was surprised how different it was when I sat on one.

Still prefer the faired though...

The little thing that sits over the headlights? I think you'll be disappointed with that.
If its a bigger clear plastic affair, then it ruins the looks of the bike which is the reason i liked it in the first place.

I had no preference. I went in to order a naked, but they didnt have any in stock and im impatient, so ordered a fiared for the following weekend.

Fully-faired for better protection plus on the SV I like how it looks more.

Really like the Street/Speed Triple's though

Faired - I like my head attached to my neck (That'd be wind protection then)

Edit: Yeah I know - the bike in the Avatar is Naked....

I like the look of traditional, retro bikes. All my bikes so far have looked quite retro/traditional never liked sports/faired bikes but would consider one if my riding would include a lot of motorway on a daily basis. I even chose this one over the ER-6 as this one looked more retro to me and altho the SV is quite a common bike I saw more ER-6s on the road than SVs so wanted something less common (for the area - Kawasaki dealer nearby). The faired version hasn't got the nice round headlight etc etc but then I never compared the two it was never an option, I was looking for my next naked bike that was what I was looking for and ended up with an SV650.

I've had both faired and naked SVs. The naked one ended up with a flyscreen and it did a remarkably good job of deflecting the wind off my head and shoulders.

It's hard to make up my mind which one I prefered - they both had plus and minus points.

Bought my naked cos it was best SV1000 I could find at the time really, but I also love the looks and you don't see as many nakeds than you do faired ones. Initially I really missed the bit of wind protection my 650s provided and really thought I'd made a mistake buying naked, but don't really notice now and did loads of motorway miles to AR08 and Glencoe Massacre last year too. Horses for courses.

i chose a naked cos i liked the look of them over the 650s, i think it looks a bit meaner

I much preferred the look of mine, but the bars were much better placed on the naked for me.

I'd get a faired only if I had to for touring, don't like fairings really.

Bikes owned.....

Naked 125stroker

Half-Faired 600 budget4 (naked for a bit)

Naked 650 V-twin
Half-Faired 1000 V-twin (naked for a bit)

Naked 1400 4
Half-Faired 650 V-twin

Folk who buy naked and then stick some god-awful fairy fly screen on them want shooting. If they rode their bikes a bit more their body would condition itself to that kind of posture. (Pushing the bulk to roundabout the front midriff it seems for me.:D )

Naked was for me again was to keep average speeds down. Generally crusing at 80-90 instead of 130 on the faired bike.

If you are thinking you need a bit of plastic infront of you to go touring you are riding on the wrong roads. ;)

Naked is just more hardcore and not as diluted an experience, riding or looking.

Where is that " Do you feel you are getting old thread?" ;)

It was the right price at the time, dont like the low handlebars, but love thw wind protection. I know you can get the high bart kits, but I dont wanna cut my screen up.

It was really cheap at the time for my Faired bike at £1300 and 11000 miles but I would prefer a naked as soo easy to work on! And some nice wide bars!

Faired, cos it looks cool (with full fairings it's very sportsbike) and for the wind protection. My last bike was naked and while a flyscreen helped it was still too windy.

faired for me too. although i kind of like the more upright seating position of the naked one.
also, can anyone tell me if this is true, but do the naked ones have a different power curve than faired ones?

Naked. My primary concern is the comfort of myself and my pillion.
After 30 years riding I dont wimp at wind blast

They have a different number of teeth on the sprocket IIRC but dont know about the power curve.

I've just bought a naked curvy, was looking for a faired but this one came up.

It seems to be a very mixed response here. I dont find the wind that much of a problem on my CG, and its a very flimsy lightweight bike. Im pretty sure the naked sv will be considerably more stable in the wind mainly due to added weight, much wider tires and a fly screen. I enjoy an upright position when riding, i feel its quite aggressive and the visibilty is better than what i assume a faired would be.
I think what i will do is try out both versions before making a decision, and hopefully a forum member would lend me a 33bhp naked to test. (i can probably try out a faired from someone i know)

I chose a naked because I prefer to sit more upright.
After a year with a bike that had a sporty rinding position I'd decided I didn't want another bike with that wrist-heavy seating position.
Plus the naked looks better

Was never a problem on Miss Ophic's GZ either. Why? cos they are sloooooooow! :p
Not ridden a naked but from all accounts the wind does get a bit intrusive at around 90mph. In fact if you sit upright on a faired with a standard screen you still suffer from windblast at that sort of speed.

naked windblast makes you feel more involved, and riding position is better for me.

Yesssssss but the point im making is that i dont want to go 90 :D
Ive hit nearly 70 on the CG without any problems, and i can only assume that the SV will be fine up to 90 since its heavier and more stable (not that i aim to get to 90). I kind of think its a good thing to have to keep the speed down because i dont want to be able to hit stupid speeds easily. Besides, it will be on 33bhp so its not going to break a tonne anyway.
Most of my riding will be on country roads, and i dont commute on motorways, so its not really a priority. Wheres the fun in a straight line anyways?
Do people find the upright position better in the twisties?

punyXpress
18-03-09, 11:59 AM
Once you get to 90, 100 is the next step, then 120
Don't ask me why, it just happens & it's a lot of fun if you don't get caught.
Naked wind blast may be stronger, but it is less turbulent ( except when following close )

I have the S model and after about an hour riding I get real pain in my shoulders. I went for the S because I think it looks a lot better and I got such a good deal with my bike I couldn't really say no.

The wind wouldn't be a problem unless you are doing continued high speeds such as on a motorway. I have ridden my mates hornet and didn't really notice much of a difference until you get to about 80. Even then the wind protection on the faired SV isn't great it just blows at your head rather than your chest.

If I were commuting every day and it wasn't on motorways I'd definitely get a naked, especially as you are already used to a similar riding position.

Thanks for that. This is actually the 3rd time today on the forum ive seen someone complain about comfort on the faired, so perhaps its a common problem.

Naked with clip-ons. Best of both worlds.

Racing position, better looks.

Plenty of fun to be had in a straight line...........

Acceleration is probably one of the main reasons I love bikes (any).

Anyway I went for a sv-s cos my other bike was nekkid and wanted summit different. (If I had just went and bought a bandit600 I would have just compared it to my GSX14 and would have thought it a slug). The clip-on bars are less comfortable at low speed for commuting in heavy traffic but this is offset by the bike being narrower for getting gaps when filtering. Better in foul weather too with a screen to dip behind.

The S feels like a wee budget sport bike to me with that riding position and has me riding in that frame of mind when out hooning in the sticks. The naked one just felt like everything else (er-5/er-6/gs500 etc.)

The S is a unique bike.

Try and get a shot of both.

I had a K5 'S', Better wind deflection, but less comfy on the wrists etc,
Now I have a Nekkid, MUCH more comfy, and easier to wheely.
