View Full Version : Binned it.
...well it actually happened on Monday morning on the way to work. Right hander and the front lost grip. I felt it lose it, then re-grip then just go. I remember spinning round in mid air and then running over to my bike. Don't remember how I landed etc. (I didn't hit my head!). Two cut knees, damaged some muscle in my left shoulder and that's it really.
Not seen the bike since Monday as when I went to get checked out in hosp my Dad arranged collection and taken to our local bike shop. Got the quote for repairs from them today - £800 ex VAT and labour. So looking at £1250 all in if I go down that route...not a chance on a bike worth £1500 or so.
So, the options I have and am now trying to decide between:
- Buy another bike, get the SV in my garage and do it up over the year.
- Look for what could be months on the forum, ebay etc and do the SV up with second hand stuff
- Sell SV either project and not get a great deal of money
- Break it and risk the chance of getting stuck with bits.
I need opinions! Sorry for the long post!

let the insurance write it off and buy it back.

Forgot to add I am TPFT and would really like to get my NCB (next month) so informing insurance is a loss loss situation?

you can inform them (technically illegal not to) but if you don't claim you shouldn't lose the NCB, just say you had a light drop and need the theft cover while the bike sits in the garage being repaired...?

put up a list of what you need to get it back on the road-you'll be surprised how quick you can get it done for and cheap at the same time

It depends on how patient you are, your budget, and how much room you've got. You could make it into a track-day bike, for example.
It's a buyer's market at the moment - you could get a great deal on whatever you are looking to upgrade to.
So the choice is to keep and rebuild, or get rid of it. It'd be a luxury to keep it, since you won't resell it for anything really. That's why a trackday bike might be fun (so you don't feel bad if you bin it again!).
But for me (right now, since I've no garage nor time), I'd sell it to a breakers and put anything it gets towards the next bike.
I will get a full list posted up at the weekend of what I need. I know a few things but my aswell do it in one big hit!
Whatever I get next would have to be restricted...limits my options in some respects :(
Depending on what's screwed I'd DIY it.
Been looking at parts that I remember are fecked on ebay (although I would prefer to give the moneys to someone on here..) and I reckon I can get everything for £200 or so...would just need to get the panels sprayed but I have a few contacts ;)

Nobody ever needs to get panels sprayed.....
let the insurance write it off and buy it back.
And rebuild it as a street fighter/custom SV;)
Making stuff perfect is expensive, getting it back on the road shouldn't be.
Have an honest think about how much you want it to look like new, buying a new bike every time you drop it seems just a touch wasteful.

Bear in mind a garage or repairer will charge full RRP for any parts that need renewing hence the high prices you've been quoted. The folks on here can be resourceful when you're needing help. Put up a list of the things you need, and we'll see what we can beg/steal/borrow to get you back up and running. Cosmetic panel damage isn't important - that can repaint anytime. Getting the bike running again is important. You don't want to lose any NCB at this point....
I dropped my fully baggage loaded Kawasaki 9R doing a uturn near the IOM TT ferry, and stalled the bugger. Went down but the bags and the crash bungs saved the day. Only a scraped mirror (easily repaired) and clutch lever were the casualities:mad::mad: A local polis motor nearby seen me do it, laughed and helped pick me and the bike back up:roll: Didn't half feel embarassing, but the bike was seriously overloaded and top heavy, so it could have happened to anybody.....
Things I need are as follows:-
- RHS Mirror
- RHS Foot rest + rear break assembly
- RHS upper fairing
- Front break lever
That's all I can think of right now. All parts for a 2001 Curvy. If anyone is able to help please let me know or if they're are parts from other bikes that fit :).
Some stuff I haven't mentioned but I have managed to get them of fleabay!
I might have a fairing panel, not sure on condition. When it stops raining I'll take a nosey in the shed.

He can't let the insurance write it off, as he's not covered for this sort of crash!
In similar situation I just fix the bare minimum to keep it on the road and don't bother informing anyone in particular.

Yours snapped or just a bit stoke-on-trent?
snapper end of break pedal off and footrest. Also bent the rear break bar (bit that connects to the footrest) right back to the frame.

How much would you be looking for if you're willing to part with said panel?

Looks serviceable. Just bend brake lever out a bit, stick a nut and bolt through it, find a replacement footpeg.
