View Full Version : Biker cafe somewhere near Bridgend?

Many years ago I had to go on a road safety course (or be done for driving without due care and attention, won't go into that) and we kept stopping off at this roadside cafe at the top of a hill somewhere around Miskin/Bridgend way next to a dual carriageway.

I can't for the life of me find anything about where this place was or what it was called or anything. All I know was that it was a popular stop off for bikers passing through the area on their summer weekend rides.

Anyone?

Yeah, that's it! For some reason I thought it was on the other side of the M4. Nice one.

The old A48 is indeed a good road, my friend invited me to ride along one summer evening for a high speed drive along it in his Saab. There's a good afternoon's circuit there if you go A48 Cardiff - Bridgend then back to Cardiff on the B4265 (stopping by the seaside in Ogmore for an ice cream and to look at the sheep).

Can you put together a decent rideout using the cafe? Perhaps disappearing a bit further down west wales. Start from bassleg school and go along caerphilly and then around some roads and loop back down under the M4 along the A48 back to cardiff?

Or start from the cafe and do a slightly shorter TT?

or you could go from bridgend to llandovery, over the black mountins (i think) which is what we did on mogs welsh way round, but the opersite way ..........im not to fermiler with the roads over there

although in the summer a quick blast to porthcwl, then to the blue anchor in rosse is a good run, for a night

That's not a bad route at all... I've done most of it before, the A465 isn't that exciting but at least you can go fairly fast!

yeah

the A465 looks poo. i think it would be better to go to llandovery from bridend

It (A465) is also reputed to be one of the more dangerous roads in the UK. Not sure why, have never seen anything along it that would make me think 'oh yeah, that's a crash waiting to happen'.

Saying that, a bit of dual carriageway can be nice if it'll get you to some twisty roads later. I went through to Bassaleg today and t'was great, but was even nicer to get onto the A48M and come back in.

what about going straight up the A4061 or is that road not any good? Leads you straight to 10000 sheep road and then over to Brecon and aber if you want to?

Having descended the A4061 into Threeherberts last Friday in a car, I think it was harrowing enough without trying to go back UP in a bike! There's also the disadvantage of a fairly monotonous ride up through Treorchy and Ynyswen.

There is a burger van near the top, though...

What do people think of the route? Is it okay or would you like bits changed?

What do people think of the route? Is it okay or would you like bits changed? The road from Monmouth down the Chepstow is a corker. But hey wht do i know i is from Kent :)
