Hi, I'm after a sports can for my SV400 but no where lists a can for the 400. Would a 650 can suite the 400?

Cheers Rob

I would imagine so, but take no responsibility if it doesn't!

As above, I'd be very surprised if it didn't, but the 400 being somewhat unusual I can't imagine many people have tried.
In your position I'd ask someone with a 650 to compare pipes, (ooerr!), look at the relevant positions and dimensions, assuming you discover the diameter of the pipe is the same, I'd be confident it will fit.

If I measured the diameter of the front down pipe on my 400 and then measured the downpipe off a 650, which i have in the shed, would that be good enough to say yeah a 650 can will do?

No measure the pipe that goes up into the can!

But then you've got to cut the original to try it...

gotta cut it anyway.

Specifically; measure it where the collector will need to be cut, that is the fatter bit of pipe after the two pipes join - the bit under the right footrest that goes into the can.

Downpipe refers to each individual cylinder's bit of pipe before they join together.

pipes are identical

There you go - a definitive answer!

Unsurprisingly it's as we suspected, but seeing as we rarely see 400s it's good to have it confirmed.

Thanks guys. Iv just been into the shed to look at the 650 pipework that I got with the bike and measured it where it had been cut for a can and it 6"3/4 inches, just have to wait until saturday to get my 400 back. I know its been said that the pipes are identical, but I'll measure anyway! Not that I dont trust anyone.

Thanks

Rob

Place a G clamp on the 400 pipe where it'll need cutting and do it up till it's just touching the pipe, make sure you get it square, then measure the gap on the G clamp.

Cool. Did you add anything to it like a hugger and such like? If so is it just the same as the 650?

my is race bike :)
whole thing is identical to 650, except engine internals and size of carbs, and single disc.
if you ever have question about part interchangeability or part number pm me. I have part number book.
