View Full Version : I am a complete and utter dunce.

Vicky (the missus has just rang me) asking me where the hell I am and why the garage door is open. I put some stuff in there this morning before I set off to work and checked the door to make sure it was down (since it sometimes jams and returns to being fully open)...

I think it was after the 2nd time I checked it that I put the keys back in the draw & must have caught the button = garage door has been open since 8:20 this morning with my bike parked right at the front on display to everyone who comes down our street (our house & garage door looks up the cul-de-sac towards people coming in)... Behind the bike is my chassis build table, and then alsorts of tools & bits and pieces including my welder and bits of computer equipment.

I am absolutely livid, since I'm always very careful about getting the bike out quietly & parking it round the back of the house & working with the garage door down so no one can see what I've got in there... We don't live in a rough area but we've had 3 letters through our door in the last 6 months, from neighbours a few doors down who've had opportunist theives nipping in and stealing jewellery, money etc, even a pair of blokes who pretended to be police officers and con'd their way into a pensioners house to steal cash from their bedroom.

Obviously with it being a cul-de-sac we don't get much passing traffic, but we do get alot of people doing 3 point turns right outside our house. The people who do turn around outside our house always seem properly nosey and have a right good look at what I'm upto, sometimes delaying their manouvre just to see if I'm doing anything interesting.

I'm probably just being paranoid but I've still got a worried sick feeling. Anyone else done anything stupid like this before? :(

I go to bed and leave the house doors unlocked quite frequently.

Just need a "nutters enter here" sign making really.

Don't feel bad about it, until you do it twice or more, then we'll apply the "dunce" label :)

I left my car unlocked on the drive and the alarm wasnt set, with near on £1000 worth of stero gear in it. I left it like that for a week before I noticed I'd done it.

I dropped the key for my GSXR on the floor outside the garage and didnt notice till the next morning when I went to get the bike out.

You're not alone.

just worried the bike's gonna go now, especially with me working away quite alot :(

Does anyone else get like a rage feeling when considering what you'd do to a potential theif if you caught them trying to steal your bike or tools? I'm quite a calm person (and a big softy at heart) but honestly I think I'd be up on a manslaughter charge if I ever got downstairs and outside in time

That is a bit worrying as far as people now being aware what you have in there is concerned but tbh if noone tried to nick off with owt in the time it's been left open then you're probably ok. Just keep a close watch and try not to let it happen again! The good thing about it is at least you'll be even more careful about how you leave the garage, you live and learn!

YC's always doing work in the garage with the door wide open and enough people walk past and can see in but I guess you can't live your life being completely paranoid, you'd be sick with the worry. When someone attempted a break in a while ago, security was upped and YC was thinking of lots of lovely booby traps and torture mechanisms to inflict upon any intruders, most amusing :-P

Don't beat yourself up about it Paul, yes you were a complete plantpot but people make mistakes, just learn from it :-)

Is your garage alarmed?

ordering another sensor this evening. Not so bothered about me being a nugget (it's quite obvious to most people), just bothered about the baddies coming in the night and me having to open up a can of whoop ass.

Better get some more rounds for the gun and leave it on the window cill in the spare room

If you need help getting angry with them (in case you lost all wrath and ended up cowering in a corner :p) I'll tell you now, whoever tries it on has also nicked your ENTIRE cake supply and robbed every bakery in the area of carrot cake in particular :D

I know how that feels we've got 4 bikes in our garage. When If feel like this I drive the car right up tight against the garage door and that way in my mind means that they'll have to break into the car to move that first before they get in the garage.

Makes me feel a little more secure...

Left keys in ignition, in the "on" position on my bike, in the Ace car park while I wandered off to have breakfast, and again, overnight outside my front door.

It's alarmed, of course, but the alarm only turns on when the ignition goes off.

How I still have that bike....:rendeer:

You're certainly not alone.

I was at the gym a few months back, it's located in the centre of town and shares a car park with a couple of other shops so it can get very busy. It's also used by a lot of pedestrians to get to a shopping area across the road, too.

The car I had was an estate with a button on the tailgate which closed the boot. I'd got into the habit of checking the boot was closed but it was so reliable I'd stopped doing it so I just grabbed by gym gear, pushed the button and off I went.

It must've been about 7pm when I left the gym so it was pretty dark but I could see across the car park that my boot wide open. As I'd pulled by bag out of the car, it dragged the strap from my case across the latch which stopped it closing properly. My laptop, camera, phone and wallet were all in the car and thankfully were all still there when I got back - lucky isn't the word!

In a similar ilk to jambo...
I've left the bike out on the street outside the house, with the keys in the ignition. Overnight. With my gloves/lid/jacket on the tank/seat. At least 3 times now.

I can't remember the last time me (or my other half) locked the car, be that at home or in town (or even in Manchester).

Before now I've gone to bed & not bothered to lock the front door. In fact, I've been out & thought I lost my house keys. I got home to find them in the outside of the front door! I've done that at least 5 times now.

Good job I live in a pretty rural area isn't it?

Feel better Paul? :)

I often leave the GPS on my bike thinking it will be insight all the time then somebody speaks to me and I wander off------it does have the security screw but still easy to nick if somebody really wanted it

Got back to the bike in the main car park but couldn't find my keys. Very brief panic til mate spotted them in my bike ignition. Been there all day ooops!

So we've established it's nowt out of the ordinary, but if anything does happen in terms of attempted theft/break in, go mental?

Sorted :) as for you kwak, how long was it on stand by for? That could have turned into some serious shizzle

I left my bike keys in my seat lock for 3days once. It was only until I was tidying up and didn't come across my keys when I found them missing. I keep my lock key on the same keyring so it could have been anybodies if they wanted it really. I've also left them in the igntition once when I went to a bike dealer.

I may have left my keys in my ignition while at work, the bike was parked in mcdonalds car park for 9 hours and no one touched it. About two weeks later it was pushed over in the same parking place

If anything does happen in terms of attempted theft/break in, go mental? Yes indeed you might aswell the police sure wont do anything about it

I would'nt worry about your garage just keep security to a maximum anything visible to detere them, If they want it they will have it away anyway. Scum.

Thing with leaving doors wide open etc is most people will automatically assume your hiding in there somewhere as who would be stupid enough to leave a door wide open al day lol ;)

And I left the car unlocked for a few days outside the house.

Left the keys in the SV in a bike bay in Covent Garden.

Came back, went to get keys from pocket, realised I must have left them in bike, sigh of relief when I saw the bike is still there.

Keys were gone tho , however a note with a mobile number had been left.

Called number, spoke to guy, who after asking me about the keyring that was on them, told me they were in the inner fairing.

Not EVERYONE is out to steal your bike.

Oh and the number of times I left the key in the seat lock when parking in Central London bike-bays as well......

I rode my push bike to the gym once, spent an hour there then popped into the pool for an hour. Went to get changed after and found my bike lock in my bag. Whoops... ran outside and it was still there luckily.
My brother once ran back into the house to pick up his basketball from the garden on the way to school. He didnt lock the back door to the garden, he didnt even close it. It was left swinging open from 8 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon, with a computer visible from the backroom window, a £600 camera laying around and a few ipods. Luckily nothing went mising. What a tw@

Actually i remember on my paper round i found keys in someones car door, in the same persons front door the next day, in someone elses front door down the road, hung on the branch of a bush outsided someones house. I returned all the keys with thanks from the owners. I once found a £20 in someones front garden, i didn't have to battle my morals...
