Just out of curiosity how many people have had the opportunity to get their bikes flat out as in red line in top gear[I had 140 on my SV speedo]
I have had my bike for 4-years now and have still to red line it in top so I don't know what the speedo would read flat out I know for certain that it is doing 72mph while indicationg 80mph,usual 10%error checked by a police car and my GPS.
Saying that I have had an indicated max speed on the GPS of 141mph while on a track[North Weald just incase you think I have been naughty]

What about the rest of you?

Ive done 3 :) a gp100, cg125 and a gpz500s, since the modern crop of bikes have come about i rarely reach the rev limiter in any gear.

I've only ever done 70 because thats the highest that I can legally go here. But i've been told that when it had the old clock on it it went past that and did an indicated about 195-200kph not much but not bad for a 250 4stroke

On my 125 yes, mind you that was only good for 65 - 70mph with the wind behind you and downhill.

SV no, GSXR definately no...

My old SV showed an indicated 135mph on the M4...possibly!

That was flat out in top but not at the red line as it won't reach the rl in top...maybe!

I redlined my old GSXR600K2 once, indicating 172mph but I know that was only around 155 as that was top speed altough engine was nice and loose. Also redlined SV a few times showing 142/43. All done legally of course

An sv will red line in top with a decent exhaust system, or so I'm told and might show just over twice the legal speed limit on the speedo, so I'm told.

My SR125 once went 65mph, of course the SV makes a steady 70;)

My K6 revs out in top :)

Careful, some people say this is impossible.

Some also say The Stig has done it on my bike, at a whopping 1.63mph, on a private runway not far from the Top Gear test track. :)

Recently red lined my sk5 fully faired and with a renegade can, slightly downhill 144mph.

This was on a private land of course.

And you were worried about keeping up with us SP?

Only had the Duke up to 140 two up :(. On a track of course

All my other bikes I've had flat out, The highest being 160 two up on my Daytona 1200. Same track.

Stillworried about keeping up with you pete.
My top speed was a straight line, I hear that you dont take corners less than 90! ;)

My gsx14 goes as fast in 5th as it does in 6th was what I found out.

Redline 5th kick 6th and no change in speed. (I refuse to lye on the tank, but that would help). That tall 6th is nice for wafting along at 70-80 at 3k or so.

Plenty of opportunities to max out your bike in France and Germany(even legally in places in the Deutch)

The SV I usually give up trying cos it ..........takes.........ages....... and you can really feel the power dropping off at high revs, so it is usually for effect/noise reasons only that it gets spanked on the road.

Had the 14 7yr and seen my top speed once. Had the SV 4yr and never been anywhere near the top figures seen on here.

Where are all these racetracks with their enormous straights?

North Weald aerodrome is a private air strip+++ in Essex nr Harlow
North Weald is used as a drag strip,LGV Training and Performance car instruction. You have the drag and loads of run off at the end of it but the old bike was still building up in top and my bottle went over the braking distance I was leaving myself.

Bit far for you to travel though

155mph indicated on my Hornet 600 on the straight at the Nurburgring.

That was fun!

As soon as I hit "submit" I knew it would be a airstrip!:)

We have Crail "Raceway", in Fife which is for that kind of fun business. Always fancied it, summit to tick off one of these days. I think its more quarter mile than top speed runs. (Can't launch a bike fast to save my life anyway.)

I bet that big ol' airstrip starts to get pretty narrow at some of the speeds you could reach.

Was talking to my dad about his points yesterday, he got pulled in 1980's and banned for 2 weeks in his MK2 RS2000 for doing on average 109, but had been seen by police doing they "think" 135, and he said the speedo at one point may have said a bit more.

They take a sample of your speed over a distance and in that distance you may have been doing more or less the indicated speed, this then works out as the average speed. Also, they would have had to catch me in the traffic, so the 110 is only there option, not the speed it showed when they did there check. I'm sure in some places I was possibly going faster as I was keeping up with 2 GSX600R and ZXR750, all solo. In fact the ZXR750 got in my way and slowed me down, if I had got past it probably would have been them that got pulled.

I'm sure Fraser or BluePete will come alone and give you the full facts of speed checks.

I had 160 something showing on the speedo on the main straight at the 'Ring. It was a case of pinning it for as long as you dare before slowing down for the exit- one lap I thought I wasn't going to get braked in time and was a bit worried but all good fun! The bike was still slowly accelerating, didn't look at the revs tbh!
