Worth a shot!!
I'm in the middle of a real wangle with a hire care company in Switzerland - long story but the outcome is they're trying to charge us (a fortune!) for engine damage to a brand new car, which we deny was our fault.
I've got a letter from Mazda, which apparently details the fault but we can't translate it - is there anyone that might be able to help?
Cheers
JM

Same as Rog really, I have only a passing knowledge of German. Try Nadiene die biene on here, or MJ, she is half German I think. At a long shot, PM it and I'll get my Dad to read it, he is fluent.

Make up your mind - should he use "Word" or "Word Perfect"?

Send it back to them saying you don't understand what they are talking about so cannot comment and as such will be continuing with your stance that you cannot take responsibility.

yeah, and that you should never under any circumstances try to carry an elephant on the roofrack of a Fiat Punto.
My ol' flat mate was german. Whenever any post came for, "The occupier" I'd give it to her.
She didn't have a sense of humour about it.

Good luck with sorting out the problem James.

Thanks folks, the problem is that we hired a car (Mazda 6) from Budget (name and shame the gyops!) at Geneva Airport last month. On the way back to the Airport the Engine Warning light came on about 2+ hours away from the Airport, so we stopped and phoned Budget.
They said, and I quote, "it's a new car, don't worry about it - just drive it back here & we'll sort it out when you get here..."
(that's the bit that's our best chance of getting out of this cacky mess)
We insisted that it might not be safe, and they eventually agreed to send out a repair man, in around 40 mins.
2.5 hours later there was no sign of any repair men, only a few phone calls in French/German and Italian!? which we couldn't understand. We, now being strapped for time had to get back to the airport, and so drive the car back (as instructed by Budget).
20 miles or so further down the road the car starts making a lovely rattling noise, followed by the cabin filling with black smoke, and the engine dying.
We pulled over and phoned the SOS number, who then towed us to the nearest Mazda garage.
There was oil pouring out of the engine, and there was a trail of it all the way down the carriageway before we stopped.
The car was brand new, less than 1000 miles on the clock.
The long & short of it is, that Mazda are blaming us for the damage, and budget are trying to charge us for the damage. They've already taken an excess charge of over £1000 (unauthorised by the card holder I might add), and are now trying to bill us for an additional 6200CHF (about £5k!!).
Add to this the bill for the Hire Car rental (yup, they're still trying to charge us for the Hire car!!) and to brand us as being ever so slightly livid would be an understatement or gargantuous proportion!!
The battle continues, but I needed to see what Mazda had diagnosed the problem as being.
For what it's worth, we were a party of 7, the driver has a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and we had 2 high ranking Anti-Terrorist Police Officers in the group, all witnesses to the events detailed above.
GRRRR!!! Lemmeaddum!!
have you had it translated yet.Got one of those occupiers sat next to me.Send it if you still need help
Strangely Sixt tried exactly the same thing with me when I lived in Germany but for me it was suspension.
They claimed I'd done 5000 Euros of damage to a brand new 5 series BMW. I asked to see not only the report but also photographs of the damage that I'd caused driving to and back from Oscherleben track for the WSB
I asked for more paperwork that you can think of. Germans love paperwork :) I just kept asking for more. Reports on this, reports on that.
When I had it all I took it to a lawyer and he wrote them a letter. Never heard from them again.
The hotel that we booked into also tried to screw me too. When we arrived they offered is what was effectively a barn behind a *different* hotel when I'd booked into a 3 star hotel. We walked out and they chased me for months and months for the payment for the rooms.
Not a good trip that one. :)
Don't give into them. The car will be covered by Mazda warranty. Keep fighting. If they put it on your credit card, claim it as fraudulent and get it back.
Good luck!

You should be able to claim the £1000 excess back as unauthorised I think.

I thought I'd forgotten all the german I knew, but I still think "liebe" shouldn't have an R, and "Tschüs" wasn't spelt correctly.

You should be able to claim the £1000 excess back as unauthorised I think.
Technically it IS authorised - you would have signed the contract of hire which would have given authority for them to take any excess payments when the hire commenced.
However speak to your credit card company and see what they suggest.
