I'm in the process of cleaning up my callipers. Had a nightmare getting the retaining pin out, but bought a pencil blow torch and hours later i've got him out.
I've just been cleaning the pistons but as i've squeezed the brake lever to get them out, the rubber seals around the edge have started to come out as well. They look quite poor fitting. So should i try and push them back in with the pistons, or do i need new ones or what? I need to move the bike at the weekend so if i need new ones then how can i temporarily fix it? Pictures attached.

Cheers.

Also - if i were to keep squeezing the brake lever would the pistons come all the way out or do they stop or what?

Pull them right out and check the seals, if they are ok then put them back in position then push the pistons back in. Red rubber grease is your friend here!

They just pop out, you can pull them out too just watch you don't score them

So what is behind the piston pushing it then? I was worried brake fluid would spew everywhere if they came too far out. Thanks for the speedy reply.

Brake fluid.

You need to strip and clean the caliper.
