MM2 9th May 2009

[Ed]

9 May was the most popular date (sorry Mark and Hovis) so that is the date of the ride. Leaving Shrewsbury Services (roundabout A5/A49, south side of Shrewsbury) at 10am.

Route is:

A5 west to A488 roundabout - this is only a mile or two but it's a fast mile or two:D
A488 headed generally south, through Bishop's Castle, Clun and Knighton, to the A44 at Pen-y-Bont.
A44 to the Cross Gates cafe - this is about a mile, it's on the roundabout of the A44 with the A483 near Rhayader. Stop for coffee etc.
A44 east to Leominster. This is a fantastic road, lots of twisties. There is a double hairpin included.
A4112 through Leominster town centre to the OK diner on the roundabout with the A49. Stop for lunch.
B4361 through Luston and Richards Castle to Ludlow.
A4117/B4364 to Bridgnorth and the bike cafe at Quatt on the A442.
Depending on time:
EITHER the B4368 to Craven Arms and the A49 back to Shrewsbury
OR the A442/A458 back to Shrewsbury if we're getting short on time.
It's a fantastic ride. Even if it rains;)

Did part of the route today, the bit through Corvedale. Lovely. Only sour note was I saw a R1 stopped for speeding in one of the short 40mph stretches, but all it takes is a bit of patience, it's less than a mile long:rolleyes: I nodded at the bloke, he gave me a wry thumbs-up, and the police officers glared back.

Nope didn't redo. Same as MM1 but in reverse. So we'll:

1. Start at S'bury Services
2. A5 west to A488 (few miles)
3. A488 through Pontesbury, Minsterley, Hope Valley, Shelve, Lydham, Bishop's Castle, Knighton, to A44
4. A44 west to the Cross gates (one mile) - this total section is about 50 miles
5. Stop for coffee/cigarette/pi$$
6. A44 east to Leominster
7. Stop for lunch at the OK Diner - this section is about 40 miles. Goes from wild Welsh hills to chocolate box English villages
8. B something or other to Ludlow
9. Get lost in Ludlow:rolleyes:
10. B4363 (?) to Bridgnorth and A442 to the bike cafe at Quatford (25 - 30 miles??) - stop for tea (unless people would rather press on back)
11. If time - B4364 Corvedale road to Craven Arms, A49 back to S'bury
12. If time doesn't permit the scenic route, then A458 back to S'bury. We might have to turn off at Much Wenlock cos the rooad over Wenlock Edge is still part closed by a rock fall. Now that would be a shame - NOT - cos the way back through Buildwas and the Ironbridge road is much better:riding: Perhaps we'll do this anyway:D

Should arrive back in S'bury about 4 - 4.30 I guess. Means we have to make reasonable progress - brisk, but not balls out - but looking at the list I don't think that that will bother anyone:D
