I started working in a town just outside of nottingham this week, it's such a strange place and it seems that no one works at all adults included.. It's like a town that the council forgot about..

I wouldn't say I'm a pushover but I don't revel in confrontation and I hate fighting but every night at 5.40 when I walk 200 yards to the tram stop I worry about getting mugged.. Stabbed etc etc and it is the type of place where that stuff happens :( I was supposed to be working in Nottingham city but my training is in this place .. For another 3 weeks... Ughh ****ing hate it!!! Why can't people just not be so agressive!! Basicly to be short this place IS chav world.. I'm a polar opposite and I don't know what to do. After my training I could be called to work here at anytime... :( trouble is there is no negotiation I NEED this job.

Buy a hoodie, and blend in! Other than that, speak to your boss and highlight your concerns. Also have a word with the local plod.

Where I live is also known as 'treacle town' because of the people that you get here, I, and friends have been in fights etc loads here, I've never been mugged but one of my mates ended up with a few broken ribs after getting mugged.

I'd just always be prepared to 'do one', and try to time your tram journeys so that you arrive and only have to wait a few minutes.

you mean they're syrupy sweet?...

lyle, sounds like a dive - we did a survey in nottingham a while back, didn't think it was that bad but we didn't stay beyond sunset...

bit of a worry as i might be doing a masters at the university later this year:smt017

Where exactly is it? Obviously it's on Nottingham tram route so it can't be that far from the city centre.

Naaa if you carry a weapon you are more likely to have it used against you..
Better off just walking through and hoping you dont get into any trouble..

I'm sure if you blagged its a tool.. I know my dad carries a crowbar in his car with him.

i don't think carrying a weapon is the answer he is looking for! however if you are worried about getting stabbed in particular there is a company that sells stab proof hoodies for a few pennies (ok a few pounds) lol

here (http://www.bladerunner.tv/)

There was talk about all the schools in london using things similar as uniform......

Great idea .. Why don’t you shove an AK down your trousers whilst you’re at it ?

Of course the best way to solve it is to act illegally, and then post such advice on a public forum. :smt017 I don’t mean to be old and preachy here but an ounce of common sense here people.

Sorry for the heavily sarcastic post but I felt the response appropriate.

Nothing is serious in relation to weapons? ;)

Its like stating on here you've rode at 150mph down a 30, I get where your coming from though.

I fully sympathise with feeling powerless and scared walking through certain areas, especially if you have no choice but to use that route to get to public transport.

Perhaps if your company was to have this flagged to them, they might be able to sort other forms of transport out. I.e. a taxi to the station or something similar.

I just worry when advice such as "carry a tool" with you, is a response on this forum, it’s a sad sign of the times that people feel the need to resort to such a thing. Aside from being illegal it’s also going to get you into trouble.

As a slight derail.. I used to carry a knife with me for work purposes, it was an only a Leatherman and a Gerber carried in a locked tool case. I was freelancing and often needed to carry them with me on public transport.. But believe me when I was questioned about them, one morning going through the tubes security metal detectors, several phone calls to my employers were made to make sure that my claims were legitimate!

Actually some of that stuff could be useful for riding anyway.......

If the abrasion resistance of the Aramid is up to it, a forcefield undershirt and the hoddie could be ideal for summer

5.40 in the evening LOL the square is swarming.. Like I said it's 200 yards but it's just such a bad feeling.. Not really sure I'd carry a knife in all honesty not my style LOL but I know most of the zombies do.. Hmm.. I don't know.. My bike would not be in the car park at the end of the day If I'd come on it :(

Bulwell mate :(

Ah Bulwell.

A mate of mine did some supply teaching there. He got threatened by the kids pretty much everyday.

Isn't there any secure parking at your workplace? If there is, go on the bike.

Don't carry a weapon, it can only end up 4 ways:-

A) Your attacker sees it and legs it.
B) Your attacker uses it on you.
C) You use it on the attacker and end up in prison.
D) The police do you for carrying it.

only a 25% chance of a favourable outcome.

Didn't see any smilies or punchline to show you were joking.

LyleJ - hope you get to feel more comfortable working there, if not as has already been suggested - speak to those at work responsible for sending you there and see if there is a compromise where you won't need to work there.

Somehow, I didn't even need to check your location. "N'eaton born, N'eaton bred; strong in the arm, thick in the head."
Thankfully I'm not a native, I moved up from Luton.

it will sound strange but it works
walk tall ,head up, straight back 32inch stride and think of what you will be doing to your bike next
most people are targeted cos they look week, someone that looks switched on could be a problem for many reasons ,so they will wait till they see a easier target. all of the above will make you look confident" not intimadating" but self assured

Pretty much every stop on the Tram route is a complete dump, its was built through all the skanky areas because they dont have cars and can then get the tram into town to pick up their GIRO for free.

Really? I've got a friend who lives like two minutes walk from Bulwell tram stop and it didn't seem that bad when we were there. It wasn't Mayfair or anything but I've felt more threatened in many other places... and we went around at several different times of the day.

your spot on there G it gets more run down the further out you are.. there are about 13 stops.. i get off at 11
i dont know maybe im just being a big chicken **** and should man up.. if im checking over my shoulder every 3 seconds then im bound to find trouble..

Still, seeing you say this about where he lives (there's that main road past the station, one of the houses on it had a really nice 80s Japanese sports car in the driveway except it was one step away from having a tree growing through it, really) makes me think Caerphilly is heaven.

TBH, it was either Tamworth or Atherstone. Since most of my research involved visiting said towns and searching Wikipedia, I was not aware of the inbreeding ratio.
Having said that, Atherstone is more normal than Camp Hill/Chapel End!
