I'm looking for a cheap runaround, max £750. Was originally looking for an old London cab, but not really any that cheap.

So I have been browsing the small adds looking for something cheap to buy with a bit of character for shipping the kids about.

Not found too much really, but big engine stuff is going cheap so worth a look. Anyway on autotrader I stumbled across a Jag XJ6 M reg a bit tatty, but a few hours with Autoglym in hand and it would look ok.........The number plate looks personalised to me being M93 KRH.

Is it fate? Should I stick a cheeky bid in?

Steer clear?

Yeah it is up for just over £750 or something I was thinking of asking my old man for a sub and offering £500 for it?

How does it work with getting a plate off of a car, I reckon that it was originally supplied with the car, so isn't a personalised one as such.

Funny thing is I was looking at a plate for the bike the other day too and one with my initials on was about £250. The wifes alfa has my plate I've owned for years, but it looks great on her car and wouldn't look right on the bike.

Is it going to be a money pit though? I only want it for the occasional days and school holidays.

Few hours with some s-doc, autoglym and some of the forum favourite autosol and she'd be cracking.......or is it too tatty?

Mate, that reminds me of the motor from Snatch with Vinnie Jones' character "Bullet Tooth Tony" drove.

You could put in a cheeky bid, worst case - it claps out after 6 weeks, the kids will be back at school and you'll have a good Private Plate.

yaay.

it should last you a while though...as it's a solid built British Motor...built to last. Just need some time spent on it.

You're barking. Why:confused: Complete money pit, you will be permanently broke, and you'll pay someone to come and tow it away. How much is a new tyre for that thing?

Thanks Ed - I was hoping the voice of reason would appear from somewhere.

How you doing?

It looks like an old mans car, i think all jags do and it certainly hasnt got a lot of character.
How many children do you have? Maybe an old mini would do the trick.

get it, whip the plate off it and then sell it on.
You have the jag for running round in till you find something else and you get the plate for the bike:cool:

Precisely.

Big cars cost money to run. Everything for a motor like that is dear.

True, but speaking from experience, even old Jags are nice to drive. Reliability isn't as bad as people make out and whilst consumables are expensive, if you're not hanging on to it for too long that shouldnt be an issue. I say if you can afford to fuel it and if its not done millions of miles then buy it.

If you get it, make sure you use the money you have left over to buy shares in an oil company

That way, at least you should get some decent dividend against the fuel you will be pouring in it

....... that being said I'd still be tempted ;-)

Old Jags aren't renowned for their reliability.
However if you want the plate it might be worth buying the car if you can get it cheap enough, clean it up, mark it up and move it on, but I'd be worried in todays climate whether there would be much interest from people wanting to buy it off you to be honest. from the pictures it looks like it might clean up ok but you won't know really until you look it over in the flesh so to speak.
Do you know anything else about the car, mileage, service history and how much mot on it etc.

Take it to bits and rebuild it as a Jag-Goldwing-Tourer.

I bought a 17 year old ford sierra for 200 quid about a month ago... £160 fully comp, starts & runs perfect everytime... You can get alot of car for very little money these days :) jag would a right giggle by the sounds of it albeit maybe slightly thirsty

My reg plate is R81 MRW, i know someone called Richard Winter, if he were 81 years old instead of 21 then i'd be selling him the car for 30 grand :D it's all about the plate, nice care anyway.

Exactly what I was thinking, a Jaquar like that would be my last choice for a cheap runaround as the basic running costs even ignoring its age are extremely high.

Looks presentable topside but I wager it will have loads of rust underneath

Take your money and buy a plate and save yourself the hassle if your only buying it for the plate

Alternatively ask to buy the plate from the garage

I got one of these Jags a couple of months ago, what an AMAZING CAR. It cost more than my house when it was new but under a grand now. The X300 series like that one are regarded as the best ever and the last proper Jag. They benefitted from the full Ford Motors quality input and are well known to do 400,000 miles without engine work. They were made 1995 - 1997 (before they changed to V8 Nikasil disaster motors). They have a reputation for great reliablility.

I used to go out on the bike on Sundays but now I'm just as likely to just take the Jag out for a drive, it's so relaxing and powerful. Classic Car insurance is £200 comp and £180 for a years tax. eBay has loads of spares so no need to pay Jag spares prices. It does about 25mpg. The silky engine has head pinning acceleration and quite a powerband after 4000rpm, the handling is awesome for any car let alone a big one, it goes round roundabouts as flat as a pancake. Not for everyone but very addictive.
