View Full Version : How do you pay for speeding fines?
pretty much as the title says, what payment method is used for paying fines?
I havnt been caught for speeding (fingers crossed) but i was wondering how theyre usually paid for if i do get a bit unlucky since i dont have a debit card.

don't need a debit card magnum, they'll accept any pound of flesh.
seriously mate i don't know as i've never been caught, not that i'm saying i do break the laws of the road.
Post them a cheque but make it out for about a pound more than the fine. That way they will have to refund you aswell....
Thanks.
Im just a bit paranoid after today. I didnt see a speed limit sign changing but there were yellow strips across the carriageway exit and i was doing about 55 when i looked down and saw those white speed camera lines that work out how far youve gone. Could be (and hopefully is) nothing.

Already?! Sure you've not been riding long :p It's worrying but push it outta your mind, nothing you can do about it anyway, I would have thought you would have noticed a flash though.
Well i was too busy looking down at the white markings and then my speedo thinking 'oh s*** i hope there isnt a camera there'.

55 on a CG speedo is probably nearer 35! ;)

lol i dont think it would be that far off. However maxxing it out today i knew i would probably still be within the limit.

I've paid one or two non endorsable fines over the phone & online , but I think they may take a direct credit from your bank account (i.e. sort code and account number)?

I sent a cheque, they seemed happy enough, as happy as these people will ever be I spose. I wish I'd thought of FG1's suggestion of sending a bit too much, make the buggers work for their money. 61 in a 50, clear as a bell dual carriageway with nothing else in sight, Sunday so no kids and no school any place near either, is that so terrible...

Dont panic - there are loads of places where the markings are there still but the camera was relocated ages ago.
If you ARE in for a ticket, there is nothing you can do about it until it arrives so dont stress about something you cant do anything about.
Just watch your speed - also you should be paying enough attention to have spotted the camera before you got to it :)

surprised they didn't bang you up!
You have 2 main options - You can pay by cheque or postal order and send payment to the address shown, or call the number on the back of the ticket or use the internet address to pay by debit or credit card. Please do not sent cash in the post.
Or you can fill out the back of the ticket and request a court hearing this is your option to appeal.

Well liek you say, it may have been realloacted. I do seem to always notice them. I was in a 40 zone earlier doing about 50 (speed limit changed down) and i was 20 meters or so from the speed camera when i saw it. Had to use the brakes for that one but easily made it.
One thing i noticed on the way there was average speed camera signs. Didnt know what they were and didnt see any cameras at all. On the way back i looked up and noticed the yellow poles that look like fancy street lights. How do they work? (no worries for those because they were in the NSL zone)

I'd suggest several things. Firstly, pay more attention to the speed limits. If you're doing 50 in a 40, it's because you didn't slow down early enough.
Second, look further ahead. If you're only 20 metres away from a camera when you spot it, you're not observing your surroundings properly.
Average speed cameras do just that. They work out your average speed by timing your progress across a certain distance. They can be a long way apart as well, so slowing down when you notice them might not save you. Incidentally, them being in an NSL doesn't mean you're safe - especially if it was single carriageway and you were maxed out, even on a CG, they may still be able to get you.
Sounds to me like you need to pay less attention to things like how to pay for tickets you may not have got yet and the niceties of filtering and more to your observational development.

It is rumoured that if you send in excess of the ammount requested by cheque that until you get the refund and cash it they can't enter the details on your license.
Has anypeeps heard of this?

Heard that one before but I think fifth gear did a quick run down of Myths & facts re: speeding loopholes a while back...
If you're doing 50 in a 40, it's because you didn't slow down early enough.
Usually its because I've already slowed down as much as I'm going to unless there is a camera or van around
edit: Oh yeah, speed over-reads by just under 10%, so indicated 50 is approx 45, enforcement limit is 45....

Apparently this was a loop-hole in Australia which has long been closed, if the police have problems with your payment and therefore cannot process your fpn instead they'll summon you to court instead where the number of penalty points will be the same (or possibly higher) and you'll have to pay court costs as well.

You really shouldn't relay on that..
I doubt the reading error on you're speedo is always 10%..
It differs when a whole host of things, speed ect..

I don't rely on it, just tend to disagree with most speed limits. If I get caught, then my bad, take it on the chin and pay the fine. That is a good speed to make sure I'm well within the 3 points £60 fine territory, and might even not be bothered if spotted by traffic police.
Are you not the person promoting safety by chicken strips?
And you're now admitting you speed and you disagree with most speed limits..
contradiction?

No contradiction. I don't speed to the extent I need to put my knee down to safely get round corners.
I could (not do!) 120 down a motorway with no traffic on it safely, so why the 70 limit?
Personally I would get rid of all "compulsory limits" and make them a "recommended limit". If you have an accident on that stretch of road and are going faster than recommended, then you get yelled at lots, otherwise no problem.

Nooo thats a silly idea. That would increase accidents so much. Anyone caught speeding will just say they thought it was safe to do that speed, and to be honest just because a speed can be reached doesnt mean it is safe. You have to take tyre blowouts into consideration because a blowout at 100mph+ will be a lot worse than 60 or 70.
So you can take ALL corners when you're out at 60 mph, without getting rid of you're chicken strips?
You dont have to use excessive/illegal speeds to get decent lean on the bike.
Some corners have to be taken at >NSL, hence illiegal speeds arent needed to use the full width of you're tyres?

Hmmm... I live 5.5km from what was until two years ago an unrestricted zone. Doing more than 140kph (85 to you lot) was frowned upon and excessive speed could always get a motorist slapped with a dangerous driving charge, which could mean jail time.
Interesting thing about the speed limits is that they were introduced as a measure to reduce the road toll, but since their introduction road deaths have increased by 50%... Go figure.
Blowouts? Look after your bike a little better... :) Hitting something at 60 or 70 can have the same final affect as an impact at 100... and without full protective gear (you!) skin will still give way to bone.
Cheers

You couldn't be charged for speeding, there are no speed limits.
If you've had an accident and said "I thought it was safe at the speed I was going", well tough. You have just proved you aren't able to judge what is a safe speed to drive at, so have a 3 year ban for dangerous.
Practical terms, the accident rate might increase for the first few months, then when the offenders all start having their licenses removed it will drop to much lower than currently.

Out of interest (not something I'm constantly concious of) are blowouts (that's right outs) supposed to be top of the hazard consideration at 100mph? If I'd reached those speeds I'd be concentrating on loads of other stuff :(

Right after real suggestions now as it's become a reality.
Winners so far are a scrunched up cheque for £30.01 so they have to refund me, the same but with the added pleasure of using as toilet roll prior to sending it off, 3000 cheques for 1p, or the pee soaked pennys - although it says you can only pay by post or telephone so it's cost me a fortune to send the pennys.

I did consider this but I'm bitter :p Might leave it a week and see if I feel like paying in a civilised manner.
(to be honest though the ones I've dealt with that sit behind the counter at my lcoal are the rudest most powerhungry out of all of the police!)

and they are not even police. Just police staff.
Although knowing someone that did that jobs for a year they do put up with alot of **** as you an imagine the sorts that come through the front door on a daily basis.

No. it had a hole in which he reckoned was for a baffle, but the exhaust was never made to house a baffle the hole was there to fit an after market DB killer. But tbh if I took it to court and they had looked into it properly the exhaust probably was very slightly too loud. Moral of the story is put a sticker over where it says not for road use or over any holes (like the other bikes he pulled did, thick *******). Or atleast take the riveted plate off your can that says the brand and replace it with one stamped 'suzuki' then take it to court with a standard can on and lie through your teeth lol. The only steps they take to stop you doing a swaperoo is writing down the make of exhaust.

Surely thats quite a risk of getting caught? At the end of the day it is just £30, but altering the exhaust itself is surely a more serious offence. When i get my SV, i'll be riding without a baffle knowing and accepting the fact that if i get caught i will have to pay the £30.

yeah lol I was joking.
The other bikes he was pulling didn't have baffles in, apparently they don't know what a baffle looks like the thing he was actually looking for was a sign that a baffle had been removed. He saw a hole and came to that conclusion.
Thats not very good if he doesnt even know what hes looking for to issue fines...
Did you know in america they have no rules on exhaust noise. You can ride without a can if you wanted.
