Hi All,
I recently bought a brand new set of clocks so I could stay on the road whilst I got Chewy to change the LEDs for blue ones. .............unfortunately he now doesn't offer the soldering service :smt017
So........................here's the deal
Is anyone is willing to change these 4 LEDs for me on the new set of clocks?
In return I'll give you my old set (with approx 16k on them) as payment.
If you can't make use of them yourself then I'm sure they must be worth at least £20-30 on Fleabay.

Roll up, roll up................:p

(Mods, please move if this is better suited elsewhere)

you dont solder then? I'll do 'em for you if you want to cover postage here and back.

Thanks Flymo,
I'll attempt soldering wires, but not surface mount stuff.
That's way too small for a doddery ol git like me:)
I'll PM my moby and we can agree logistics?

flymo

Surface mount, depends on just how fiddly that is. Do you have a photo of the circuit board?

Hmm, spare pointy clocks you say, just what I need...

I can get a photo of the circuit tomorrow morning.

The details of the LED mod are here on Chewy's website:

seems straightforward enough, if you want me to do I'll PM my address. Send it all over and I'll get on it. When complete you can also arrange for collection if you want, keeps things easy. I use www.parcel2go.com (http://www.parcel2go.com) personally, reasonable cheap collection and delivery.

That's great Flymo, thanks for this.
Busy schedule coming up over the next week, but I'm looking to take the clocks apart at the weekend and post them over to you sometime next week?. I'll PM my moby?

Thanks again :smt038

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:mad:

Just for others to avoid the mistake, when dismantling the clocks (and in Chewy's instructions it does say take care) make sure that you lever from BELOW the white plastic layer in order to remove the LED screen NOT directly under the LED screen (my new screen is now bol****sed) and I'll have to use the LED screen from the existing clocks once Flymo has changed the LEDs.
Flymo, the cct board should be with you near the end of the week, thanks again for your offer of help with this:smt038
Apologies Baph, I was hoping to be able to make you a present of the old clocks!

It's real fiddly soldering to do this. I wouldn't try unless you're confident tbh.

Err, I thought that's partly what I was doing this for . No offense Baph.

I had a little modification in mind for my race bike, was planning to use the old clocks for that. If its still usable send it over, I might still be able to work with it.

So, the clocks you want modding, are you sending an assembly that can be plugged into an existing loom so that I can test afterwards? Or is it just the circuit board?

Dont really want to be stripping my race bike clocks to test this unit.

Dim Problem. I assumed the same flymo, which is why I only ever said I needed clocks. Note that I never specifically asked if I could have these ones. :)

But thanks for the thought o' Baldy-one. :)

I'd say you could have the LCD from my clocks when I replace mine, but that's the part that's fubar'd anyway!!

Blue LEDS for the clocks is a BAD idea.

Blue light is the hardest to focus on due to wavelength, energy and all sorts of things.

All that blue light could cause your eyes to get very tired at the least, and could cause issues with looking at the clock, then looking ahead at night.

I know that I have problems focussing on blue sighs etc, might be worth checking out before you fit them.

I have a pair of blue LED's mounted on top of the dash (under the screen), I won't comment (in public) as to what they're for, but they certainly catch your eye.

I wouldn't like to read a rev counter with blue backlight though.

A hornets nest I seem to have created
As there was no mention of actually wanting the clocks I "assumed" Flymo that you didn't want them whereas Baph had!

Apologies to both Flymo and Baph, yet again "assume" has made an ass out of u and me, well me anyway:rolleyes:
Sorry guys #-o

Yep Mike, its only the cct board coming over, I posted it 1st class today, so it maybe there for the weekend
You are welcome to any of the clock bits that are left over, but I seem to have devalued the deal with my cackhandedness, which now includes taking the head off one LED whilst packing the cct board up! (me and electronics definitely don't mix)
Don't worry about testing it, I've not lost a lot if it doesn't work (well until I try to change the LED screens over anyway!!!!!)

Came across this mod myself shortly after i got my sv and fell in love with riding at night, always had the intention of getting it done (VERY last mod baph) though reading this reakon i'll leave it now, vicarious learning ftw :D

yes i agree... but... why do Volkswagen's have blue led's in the dash?

i was going to do the same thing with blue led's untill a good friend of mine who has been in the lighting industry for yeeeeeears (owns ledfx) pointed this out to me... he suggested green, amber or white... since the clocks have amber led's in them already i left them alone...

VW use blue because it's distinctive, and wrapped in the instrument panel it's perfectly bright enough, and offset with the red needles, creates a warm, luxurious and eye pleasing glow.

And it looks cool.

Simples

Volkswagen translates as "people's car", with, in my opinion the undertone of being a car for all the people, or to put it another way - the Common Man.

Again the term "Common Man" could be taken to mean Commoner.

In the UK we use the word Chav to mean Commoner these days.

Explaination ends :)

so we're concluding, get the mod- b as chav?

personally i think it looks cool but the issues about safty at night concern me more than chav-association, besides we're out on sv's, NOT scooters

did my clocks with blue leds from chewey bout 3 years ago, (well actually once i got the clocks apart and saw the size of the bulbs i paid someone else to do the soldering..!!);)

the nighttime issue is NOT an issue IMO...personally, i'm watching the road ahead rather than my clocks...
reckon you'd have to be staring at them for awhile for them to 'affect' you...?

i think they look cool myself and luckily, the chavs round here are on scooters not bikes...:smt097

but a burberry painted tank...hmmmm, theres an idea:D

Stu, good call; thought about tht myself but was unsure of how distracting they might be at first. Reakon i'll probably get the mod in due time anyway, since its sumthin ive wanted to alter for a while..

cant see myself risking a DIY job with the soldering tho :P

I suppose that means you'll want me to then eh? :p

Personally, I wouldn't want blue lighting anywhere on my bike. Main reason being I live in North Wales, and don't want to get used to seeing blue lights in peripheral vision, I'd rather be alerted to when police may be around me - that's why trucks etc fitted blue lights at the front really grind my gears!

IMO, the stock clocks are fine - think yourself lucky that they actually function as the manufacturer intended. Mine don't. :(

those bulbs are SMALL....!!!! have done plenty of soldering of stuff myself in the past but one look at those bulbs and the circuit board itself and i thought no way..!;)
found an electronics/repair guy local in the yellow pages and he only charged me bout a tenner to change the bulbs..:D

incidently, whilst he was working on it he (foc)repaired several other solder joints on the board which were starting to crack..? something to do with the way the soldering on the boards are done in the factory and the vibrations from the engine..maybe saved me a few problems there..

Depends on how competent u r with soldering, but i was gonna, as stu did, either find a professional to do it for me or take advantage of chewys (up coming) offer to have it professionally done, at charge ofc.

gd point about the feds tho but i only tend to speed during daylight(when lights from clock cant b seen), any blue flashing lights behind me at night will be distinct enough i reakon.

Like i said tho, probs one of my last mods

Apart from Soulkiss determining that I do indeed come from a Council estate, I have found the blue LEDs (thanks Flymo) great at night and nicely blingy.
