Well after screwing up the interview last week, I thought I failed.:smt022
But I didn't! Yipee for me! :takeabow:
Just need to not mess up the medical check, and I will be training as a train driver at the end of May!:driving:
BTW anybody know what goes on at medical checks? Never done one and really don't want to fail at this stage
err.. :pukel:

'Lie on your side on the couch please sir, while I just put my rubber glove on!' ;)

Seriously though. Railway companies generally have very strict drugs and alcohol policies, and you will have to give a urine sample for testing. Hope you haven't done any drugs for a few months! ;)

If it is an occy-health medical then it'll be a chat about medical history, eyesight (colour-blindness if you are going trackside) etc and peeing in a cup.

Sight, hearing, heart, reflexes, body fluids (no, not that one;) ). General fitness to drive a train.

Well done, these jobs are rarely advertised and usually oversubscribed.

Well done!
I can imagine the check will mostly be for your eyes (they dont want someone blind drving the train). Im sure it will be quite basic since you dont need to be particularly fit to drive a train.
Maybe they will test your pee for drugs? Unlikely though... :D

A friend of mine was given a job in the Hertfordshire Police. Had a start date for training and everything. Then failed the medical. Don't count your chickens too quickly. But congratulations on getting through the selection. :smt038

I know someone who drives a big choo choo. He is often spot checked for drugs in his system and i think its a 1 strike and your out scenario.

Good luck and remember you can turn up at work upto 45minutes late and have no consequences.....well thats what they say about the delayed trains.

Are you prepared to deal with suicide jumpers on the tracks? It happens VERY often. My dad has been on the train twice when it has happened just from commuting to work, and he doesnt normally take a train. Driving one all the time its bound to happen.

What happened to your mate in the medical bigape?

He had a knee operation a few years before leaving the army. Even though he had been given a clean bill of health and even goes out running with me sometimes, the medical team read his previous history and quite simply put the brakes on his whole career. He passed the written application, the interviews and even had been given a start date for his training. Then the medical team picked up on this previous surgery from his records and just put a stop to the whole process. He is currently serving as a special constable and is appealing the decision. I know this does not have a bearing on you being a train driver but it does go to prove you can not be too sure until you have been given the all clear from the medical team before considering yourself employed in a new career.

Best of luck non the less and I was not trying to put a dampener or your successful selection. Well done. :)

So have you done all the tests already? I had a friend who tried to become a driver and passed the interview but and failed on those, so he ended up as a conductor instead.

I work for Network Rail but before that I worked for a TOC and had to go through their medical check. Weight, height, any known problems you need to tell them, vision, hearing, urine.

You will be screened for alcohol and drugs randomly, and also immediately after any naughty behaviour such as a SPAD. Smoking is okay, in fact up until only a year or two ago traincrew could smoke in the crew-only compartments!

NR's blood alcohol limit is 29mg (vs the drink drive limit which is 80mg) so stop a drink sooner from now on ;)

What TOC, by the way?

Yeah done all the tests, actually failed about 18 months ago but tried again after loads of practice and learning stuff

What's a SPAD?

TOC - Southern. My local!

What do you do for NR mate?

SPAD----Signal passed at danger

Southern----You will need to spell your employers name right;)

Well done on getting the job.Like gold dust these days.Did you originally fail the coordination and reaction time test?

They let you do the tests again?? My colleague who I mentioned, they gave him one shot and that was it. He was really mad, as the 'practice' test ran at about a quarter the speed of the proper one and didn't prepare you for what was to come. He also said several driver managers who'd been driving for years and years have failed it.

Southern should be fun - if it snows all your trains can't run because of the third rail.

I'm a delay attributor for NR - investigate delays and attribute them to a cause (infrastructure, unit fault, etc)

So who gets the blame for leaves on the line? The trees?;):D

The incredibly complicated answer simplified is that it's based on whether the vegetation has been cut back, and whether the RHTT (railhead treatment train) was booked to run and whether it did.

You've probably seen an RHTT, it'll be two locomotives pulling three or four cars with chemical tanks on them. They clean the leaves off.

Also, we never say 'blame' in this job
