I'm doing a Living With report on fitting my SV with R&G crash bungs in the next week and was wondering if any of you have been unfortunate enough to crash test your R&G crash bungs.
If you have could you please PM me or email me (liam.marsden@motorcyclenews.com), I'd like to feature you in MCN.

Have trashed 2 on my pointy SV - both on the left side.
In both cases they sheered the bolt at the mount point.

off in Nov...
it bent the bolt....called R&G who wanted something like £36 as they only do it in a set......i now ride with 1 crash bung
the bike was written off ( I bought it back)....
dropped twice when cleaning and was fine..no damage because of the bungs..but first crash....first write off!
No probs here, only time the bung has sheared off was this time when it hit kerb so id expect it to snap off

What happened Dappa?
The bung and bike look undamaged. Looks like somebody has just come along and ****ted it with a hammer

Had a spill at about 10mph on tarmac did not bend but did wear down suppisingly and did not 100% save the fairing good couple of scratches can get a pic if you would like. Dom

They aren't meant to save fairing from getting scuffed, its to save the major parts like frame etc

i dropped my SV in the driveway when cleaning it. crash bungs prevented everything except a slight bend to the gear lever (still there) and a scuff on the mirror.

Wooo Hooo.....my kind of thread!!!!!
I had a crash on the mway at 70mph in which the bike slid on the R&G. I then had a 2mph drop (That doesnt count). Then I decided that I wanted to see if my R&G would make a good ice skate!!! Lets just say it did. Not had many problems other than that the ice incident caused the engine bar to bend and was a pig to get out.
No picks though sorry as never really wanted a memento of my crashy mcgee exploits!!!!

couldnt tell you the full extent of the damage, (im STILL waiting for an engineers report)
basically someone turned right as i was overtaking him  (just after he had pulled out in front of me)....
the ins wrote it off due to every panel/fairing piece being scratched, a dent in the tank, the gear lever rod thingy being bent, the ns front footrest hanger being snapped, the viper exhaust being scratched, the right mirror broken off etc etc.....
i bought it back for £100, spend about £70 on a bracket and a mirror.....got it mot;d (it passed) and back on the road :-)
still got the damage, but as long as i get the payout then its a £200 bike! happy days!
the bung itself was undamged apart from a slight scuffing, was just the bolt that bent

By the way Dappa.....not sure who you spoke to at RnG but I managed to buy individual parts that I needed. Managed to get just the crash bung on its own for 11 squids.

Yup, I asked for one engine bar, one engine bolt, one crash bung. All were priced seperately. They originally tried to get me to buy the kit but as the kit includes the bracket I just said no thanks.....only need a couple of bits.

Completely forgotten we had them!! Yup, the bike slid at 70mph down the mway and if it hadn't been for the crash bung the bike probably would have fliped. That being said, I think I was quite lucky that the bung didn't catch on anything and therefore flip.
Only just seen this Liam. I have Emailed you. I am on my 4th set. Lucky the last set cost me nothing and its been a long while (Thank god) that i have had to test them.

So they're robbing barstewards then? They charged me £28 for a new bung and £12 for a new cotton reel :smt017

infact there's a lot of daves anywhere we used to play a game when we were bored....I mean hard  at work where we'd ring random companies and ask for 'Dave' 9 times out of 10 you could guarantee they'd either say 'Dave speaking' or 'I'll put you through to him'
Haha :)
Were just a superior race! ;)
Thats a good idea btw... :D

I know some peeps have had bad experiences with them, but I must admit they have saved major damage to my bike twice. So I can't fault them.
I'd had an off at about 60mph, and that only bent the bolt (and the bung), with a little grinding on the tip at approx 45 degrees.
Liam, just a little point you might want to make clear, R&G have different bungs for pointy vs curvy, and even for faired vs bikini/naked. Different designs might hold up differently under stress. :)
i had an off at about 10 - 15mph lowside, the crash bung bent and ground down but saved everything apart from rear break and lower fairing ( lightly scratched) i would recoment them, they save you a lot of money in an off. i called r and g dirent and they sent me a bung and bolt direct for £35, suzuki wanted £50 for the bung without bolt.
chompy :D

I use a different make that nobody else seems to use and they held up well , won`t touch R&G after some of the things I have heard about them .
I was under the impression that if you're looking for crash bungs, get motosliders.
At least that's what I've read here.

Only for Naked bikes, or, you have to cut the fairing for them to fit.

That goes only for fully faired, right?
Saw them fitted (pic), didn't look like much hassle.

Motosliders do them for fully faired bikes now.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......didnt know that. In that case, would recommend them over R&G anyday if thats the case. Lily had the standard motosliders on hers and must admit they seemed much more solid.

I'll try and find my pics, bung practically completley worn away, fairing in a bad shape but the engine and frame (the important parts) looked fine..

You're prepared to make a recommendation based purely on the brand, with no other experience of function or design?
Any pics of these motosliders as presumably they need to use a bracket like the R&Gs as well?

Drew has R&G's I had motosliders.
I had a little 5mph spill and the motoslider took the impact and all that broke was my gear selector, with only a small mark on the motoslider and no need to change the bolt or anything.
Drew's 5mph spill has caused us to by a new R&G and bolt.
If i had to pick between the two i would go for motorsliders everytime.
Drew isn't making a recommendation purely on brand, he has seen both, and seen both after they have been put to use.
I had R&G's on my faired K6. I highsided coming out of a roundabout and the bolt bent and snapped off. God knows where the bung ended up but I couldn't find it.
I rang R&G and had a very good response. They opened a warranty claim and sent me some freebies for my next bike, a naked K8 SV.
They sent me, crash bungs, bar end sliders, rear swing arm bobbins and a tail tidy.....all for free.......:D
Admittedly, the original shouldn't have snapped but I suppose at the end of the day the damage would still have been substansive so I think I had a result.
Thank you R&G.
a piccy of what was left after losing the bung:

i have R&G but want to take them off ( bought some engine guards)
QUESTION...-> Should i just unscrew the bobbins , or do i need to replace the connecting rod too? i thing the R&G rod is somehow different to an OEM (snaps easier?)
If i had to pick between the two i would go for motorsliders everytime.
+1 - unfortunately i've had to have R&Gs fitted as the repair garage couldn't source the motosliders, and then they fitted the wrong ones. Bungs for a fully faired bike look bloomin awful on a bikini faired one :(

well motorsliders, slide like the above pic, but don't wear down half as much. Its a bit more like a scuff..
Fair doos, my fairing cracked, but that were down to the OEM indicators being made of some sort of alien non breakable bendy stuff, and pushing the fairing in.
SVRacing parts were very quick to send out a replacement bung, but I've not got round to fitting it, as theres mor than enough left on the scraped one for another go...not that its going to happen!

oem indicators are indistructable (and ugly as fook )
Didn't get to test my motosliders very much in my crash as the bike summer salted and landed shiny side down. Saved me having to remove the grabrail meself though

Beg to differ - dropped the bike twice, broke the indicators twice.
I have DHMs - only dropped the bike from stationary, but they held up okay and look untouched.

Are you on a pointy and if so are they made of different stuff/a diffo design?
my curvy indies got broke when someone who shall remain nameless wheeled a bike into them pointy ones are more arty farty so probably just as breakable.
