HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Keep on laughing guys, while you were all at work, I was on a hil, on three wheels having the time of my life!!!

Love it. Went up a good steep hill, nothing near as serious as I have done before, got to the top and bottled it because we were on our own. Unfortunately, with loose top soil, the front end slid down to the left as I was backing up and went right into a rut. Pics will be posted tomorrow.

Trust me guys, you'll be impressed. Waved down a nice young lad and his Mrs in an old L200 and hooked up my tow rope and it was only a few inches and we had traction back!

I have to say, it was great fun.......when you're in a Landie, it's not fun unless you get stuck and have to try and get yourself out.

Mike, the Insa Turbos are fab....lots of road noise as expected, but great traction. Just a shame we didn't have anyone else with us. The guy that towed us had got stuck on his own two weeks ago and had to wait 3 hours for a defender to go past before he could get towed out!

So.........I've had a fab day and to top it all of in the most excellent way.....Stretchie was organsing a Freelander to come and tow us out and he was so excited about me, the landie snob having to be towed by a lowly Freelander....but I managed to foil his cunning plan of embarrasment and get someone else to tow me instead!!!

I love getting stuck!!!!!

I'm sure there is a logical reason behind it.

Yeah....logical reason was....I should have kept going and the momentum would have got us right through it, but I stopped, not wanting to scare the pants of Saxo and get us stuck further in and so.......down the hill we went!

Still, we went off down another little track, he gave the dogs a walk while I was flashing passers by for a tow and all is good now.....about to eat a giant beef brisket that's been in a low oven since 7pm yesterday with all the usual BBQ stuff.

At least when you have to get towed, you know you've had fun!

So out of interest, was the tow forwards or backwards? would the otherway have been possible?
Why doesn't everyone have a winch so that you are self sufficient? cost? they're not that good? or you'll always get a tow of someone? (if you look as good as gruntygiggles) ;)

Because we use the Disco as a day to day car too and I thought it best to stay where we could be easily towed rather than fight it out of there and possibly get in worse trouble. Would have needed a few heavy blokes on the back to bring the rear wheel down, but only had Saxo. Honestly, that would have made all the difference, but with diff lock in, low box tried it slow and easy just easing off the clutch...nothing. Kept it in low, stuck it third and revved the tits off it......nothing! I didn't want to go round.

I'm a little miffed, if we had a shovel, I'd have just hacked away at the rut and we'd have been ok, but with Saxo looking after the dogs and no one else to help, just easier to get a tow!

That range rover you had sounds lovely. I used to have a 1986 90 2.25 petrol with an lpg conversion and also had a 1991 Range Rover 4.2 V8. Now that could go anywhere. Went on a weekend trip into wales in that, ripped the back bumper off, snapped the handbrake and ripped an LPG tand off the bottom........got them all fixed with the help of the team and on we went. The handbrae cable snapped on the morning of the first day though, so we had an interesting weekend. Didn't stop us though!

Backwards tow. The L200 couldn't get up the track we had gone up as he didn't have the ground clearance, but he drove up the bank to the side and he only had tension on for about 3-4 inches.........as soon as I got traction it came up out of there no problem.

As for the winch.......yeah, quite an expense getting a winch bumper and decent winch. We're planning it for later this year though. The only problem with a winch is.......it can only help you if you have something to hook it around!

Haha, yeah, I wasn't that amused about it......but better than a freeloader just because Stretchie was so desperate to come and rescue me in one!
TBH, Freeloaders aren't that bad anymore.....it's the early ones that were awful and I'd never take a child in one.....one of the worst Euro NCAP. They started out at a 2 star for adults, no child rating and I think they have gradually improved to now be a 4 in both like the disco. Not bad off road either now, but the power/weight ratio isn't too good apparently. Never been off road in one myself though.

Go on to Youtube and search for 'Corwen Carwash' - that's the river crossing. Most show the river at normal winter flows, but currently it's way lower. Might even consider taking the sex-trail through it at current levels, although she might stall with no low box - water is heavy!

Just had a look. We've got a ford near us that about the same depth as that, so hopefully, having seen those clips of discos without snorkels going through, stretchie will want to give it a go. Just wish we had someone that could come with us!

:D I am sure we could rustle up a couple of other motors if you come up. Depending on the route chosen will depend who's vehicles are suitable. Rik with the Navarra will be up for it, but would have to be careful if the river was deep on the day. I have seen several pick-ups float off because the load bed is like boat, not to mention SJ's with stupid large tyres!

Stretchie has my number, give us a call and we will arrange something :D

A bike and 4x4 are the way to go I tell ya!

When it's summer and all the mud has dried up, but the tarmac is warm and dry, get the bike out and go for a blast round the twisties.

When it's winter and the byways are full of mud, roads are flooded and greenlanes are so slippy you can drive along a track side on, it's time to get the 4x4 out and have fun.

This one made me laugh. Why on earth, when it first when down off the track and over the edge did the towing vehicle not keep going and pull it out before it got too far? There was a guy stood there watching it happen, he could have easily run up and told the other driver to keep going.

Sorry but Camac's are rubbish................. :smt019
Really? They worked well on that while he had it - but then we had nothing to compare them too. Certainly better than the road orientated tyres you see on most off-roaders!

Had a Trooper like that for years, loved it. Just been looking to see if there are any cheap ones on Autotrader / Ebay. GG you are leading me astray!

You know you love it! Get yourself an old 90. I've never had off road fun like I did in the old 90. It was 1986, 44,000 miles only used one day a week to the local shops by a farmer and we just stuck soem Colway remoulds on it and never had much of a problem. It was petrol with an LPG conversion, so not great in water, but we used to pull out landies with 3 inch lifts, big mud pluggers and all the extras in just a bog standard 90.

I'll get one again.

Or you coulf get a disco or old range rover and have the comfort as well. They can all do the same off road but if you get a 90 or 110, it'll still be worth what you pay for it now even if you sell it in 5 years time so long as you look after it!

Oooh, you could get a little Suzuki, stick a lift, some good shocks, steering rods and tyres on it and you could fly around. You'd never get it through Corwen Carwash though....we'd all have to wave you off down the river!

I reckon about 5% of off road drivers use Carmacs.......they are just not as good as most. I always used to use Colway remoulds on the 90 and Range Rover and they were as good as BFG's that were 3 times the price. Towed many a man out that had so called better tyres.

Sticking with remoulds now with the Insa Turbos as Colway went into administration last year, but these seem pretty good. Need to do some proper off road work in them first to find out for myself, but the LR forum I'm on says they're some of the best tyres you can get now.

Carmacs just don't have a good track record and so not many people use them. Look through LRM or LR owners International magazines and you'll be hard pushed to find them in there.

My mate paid £400 for that with a years MOT exactly as you see it there - TDi with 210,000 miles but he put another 20k on it and drove it all over the country - it was superb.

My off-roading currently comes in 1/10 scale - someday I would like to upgrade to 1/1 scale...

Yep, thin and nobbly is the way to go, certainly for mud anyway!

I did notice the Victoria plates and the landscape behind but such a shame you couldn't have shipped it home. You'll be hard pushed to find one of those in decent order now.

My dream is to get a 1980's 90 and do that up the way I want. Would also love to get another Rangie as I keep saying to Stretchie. He's fallen in love with them too.

Because most of the clubs I know only spend about 25% of their off road challenges in mud. Better to have the extra traction surface when you're on really rocky terrain or are tackling a set of boulders and need to go at snails pace, foot nowhere near the throttle and negotiate careful steering to avoid rolling. (will find pics later)

If it's just mud, thin and nobbly........for a general all rounder, we've got 235/70/R16's. They are good on road and versatile off road, which is why so many fit them.

Unfortunately, people seem to think that by fitting bigger and meaner looking tyres, they look like they are serious off roaders, but we that know the difference can just sit back and laugh!

Hehe....I've grown up with Landies and just love them. Proper work horses and much cheaper and easier to maintain and fix yourself than most others. I'm sure some would disagree, but I've certainly found that to be the case.

Also........85% of all land rovers EVER to come off the production line since the very first one was built are still running and road worthy.....that's quite a feat giving that they have now been in production for 60 years!

Go British....get a landy!

There's a disco on here that you could replace clutch and forks on and repair/reweld any bad rust for under a grand including purchase price.

Or, a fair way down the page there's an old Shogun that looks alright if yo just want something cheap to get off road in!

Problem with Landies is....they hold value well, so it's hard to buy them cheap unless they need work doing like the disco mentioned.

Here's a steal. Already got a diff guard on it and it's missing a cubby box, but you could pick one up for peanuts at a scrap yard. Looks to be in tidy condition around the rear wheel arch, which is where they start to go first, but would want to look under the boot lining and rear wheel arches to be sure. If you could get the guy to MOT it so you had a list of what, if anything it would fail on, you'd have a really good buy with this. Just need to seal the rear sunroof!

What's to talk about........get down with thin tyres and get grip.

I 'king love crabbing sideways, no control over steering whatsoever, floating on mud and having fun.....but when you're near ditches or narrow gates, you need grip, so thin and nobbly get my vote.

Ask Stretchie about not having control over steering!

On his first trip out with the club, he was using what he thought (and in most cases would be) common sense and was trying to drive out of the ruts and stay on the "firmer" ground, not be in the ruts and in deep mud.

After a while enjoying the car sliding from side to side and watching Stretchie turn the steering whell in vain.....I told him the only way to stay straight in deep mud is to keep the wheels in the ruts and let the ruts guide you.

A few years back, I travelled nearly 1/2 a mile somewhere near Machynlleth eating a sandwich and packet of crisps while the rangie steered itself down the track. LOVE IT!
