Yamaha R1's are a sound investment. Kwak, I was wondering about a rather bland and boring technical aspect of the new R1 which i wonder if you could ask your mate for me - valve clearence checks? Yamaha's seem to have quite long intervals in their 4 cyl bikes (24,000 miles) and i wondered if this was the same on the new R1

Barely throwing money away
Im jealous, they look awesome, im almost certain i seen one on the road on Sunday.
No doubt there will be 1000's of them in london. Theres enough of the old ones hooning around being ridden by complete cnuts.
It doesnt look much different to the old model and for £10k, it had beeter be good!

running in is up to 7,000rpm which is still over 100mph! the thing really does sound like a "V" twin, weird sounding machine but truly a piece of art.

black and gold does look good TBH when i first saw the red/white one i think it looked like a pig lol, amazing how a colour can transform a bike.

Lovely! I'd have to get black wheels, black forks, and replace the stickers with black ones though :D love all-black!

+1
Saw one last night through my local Yam dealers window and that black makes it look stunning!

Ooh yes! That is fookarn gorgeous. Didn't like the look of it before, but in black it works.
Was reading about the new big bang R1 recently - I've always had a soft spot for them (even though I prefer twins)... The big bang engine seems to have gone some way to solving that - at least with the sound :), and in black it's beutiful... Now if only I could raise the cash... <dreams>

it is weird, you know its a four but it sounds like an RSV aprilia, it just needs an akra system now but at £1300 they aint cheap.
I'd like one, but then I'd like any of the 1000cc "superbikes" and I'd be blown away by any of them. There's something to be said for an engine that screams too, if I went for an IL4 "superbike", it would partly be because of that high pitch shriek and the way that high rpm really sounds like high rpm. That's what IL4 is about for me.
I'm surprised it took Yamaha so long to get their road bike sounding a bit more like the GP bike though.
A brave man had one on track at Rockingham today. It looked awesome. Coming out of the final corner and on to the straight the guy couldn't throttle on hard as it just lifted the front wheel. It sounded nice but really quiet (stock cans). He obviously wasn't interested in the apex though.

The faster the bike ... the worse the riding!

Indeed :D However, there were some very rapid guys out in the fast group there today on fast bikes.

Yes, I thought it sounded rubbish too, but I'll be honest that fours don't light my fire sound-wise anyway.:D

The thing is with a litre sportsbike that to hear that 'scream' you need to be well in to three figures! :D

Oh and the guy I know rides so it's an "actual" friendship apparently (as opposed to "once" knowing him), he gets himself little deals on stuff now & then. Lucky b*stard I thought!

Definitely! Can't ask for much more success can you ! :D

they shouldn't be - yamaha rrp is £9999 but I have heard of dealers pricing them upto 12000!!! prob thats why they've sold none and we have 40+

they have sold load tho, me mate said they are selling as fast as they get them in.

It does make me laught all this credit crunch hype and bikes are still selling as well as they ever have (touch wood!!!!) I have seen dealers with them at £11500
It doesn't help that the manufacturers have cut back production so people are having to wait so long ~(plus I don't get paid until delivered!)

The UK is the cheapest place in europe now for bikes according to more crap than news.
There was a white/red framed one in the dealership yesterday when I picked up my '06. It doesn't look so bad in the flesh. I agree the front headlights/ram duct area looks awkward, but as with most sportsbikes now, aesthetics isn't top priority. If they could get away with no lights, I'm sure they'd do that instead!! ;)
Their mechanic was telling me he's getting their first black one, due in this week. So, i guess that'll be the popular choice. It's mindblowing, leagues ahead of everything else on the market he said. But then he would....:p
Mind you the older 04-06 one's look best in black (with carbon akra's). I just couldn't find one. Still, I'm quite happy with mine. :smt047
