View Full Version : About to buy a satnav (navman s30) any reason not to?
I wanted something flat so that it fits in the clear part of my tankbag. (no point paying out for a mount yet, but may invest in the future.
The tomtom rider doesnt interest me and its pricey.

Is there any reason why i should NOT go for this satnav?
Oh also one question. Does anyone know if it can be charged up and just go off the battery?
I have a brand spanking new tomtom rider v2........would let it go for a reasonable offer.
Due to the fact it won't fit on my RR.

I have the Navman iCN 720 (http://www.navman.com/in-car/europe/uk/Products/66739/12032/), bit older so not sure how relevent it'll be, but easy to useand navigate with, although only about 5 hours from the builtin battery, so had to fit a power socket to the bike for longer runs (which is where I'd normally use it), the petrol station database is useful though.
Cheers Mark.

Thanks, but its completely out of my price range. I wanted something flat like the navman so it slips into the clear bit of the tankbag.

Great idea but my poor RR wouldn't look right and well, if I get lost that just means a longer ride, right?

I have a Medion satnav that runs off battery and has bike related connections as well with headphone output and bike setting , managed to bag it off ebay for £40 . Flatter than a packet of ciggies as well :)
They still print maps, cost around £10 and need no power supply

Cheaper at £45 just satisfy yourself it's what you want

This is what I suggested to Kev: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAT-NAV-MOUNT-BAR-FITS-HONDA-CBR600RR-VFR800-VTEC_W0QQitemZ330315853932QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Mo torcycle_Parts?hash=item330315853932&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318
The guy hasn't got one up for the CBR600F at the mo, but more than likely he'll be able to do one if you contact him...if you do find out, let me know, as if I get a satnav (I do want one for longer rides!) I'll need a bar for both the CBR and the GSX-R...
Or perhaps I can just steal yours.... :p

Lol, I didn't think it was that much of an eyesore ;) and you need it to get home "after" getting lost! :D (at least - that's what I want to use it for haha, oh and also to try and spot nice looking roads as I'm riding around the area)
And yet, 2 pages in, still nobody has answered Magnums question...
If there was a definitive thread for derailing...
:D
I bought the satnav in my first post. It should come on saturday, and the charger may come the same day or day after. Ill post a mini review after ive tested it.
Use it to guide you through London to meet the soho lot one Friday, that'll be a good test, one way street, road work and all.

Its official - if you use a Satnav to get you to somewhere you have already been then its called "****nav".
It is acceptable in those situations to use the Satnav if you get lost, but automatically turning it on and programming it for EVERY journey - ****nav :)

Not sure what expletive is blocked out there...
I wont use it for every journey, but mostly for places im unfamiliar with. I will only turn it on when i get nearer to the place i need to be (mainly to get by on the 3.5 hours battery life).
Im going out maybe on saturday to a location i wont say yet... but i'll be posting pics in a sad, anticipating kind of way.

I've noticed on motorways that the "keep right" instruction is usually responsible for some idiot doing 50mph in the outside lane. Especially noticeable at night when for some reason the device is still in day mode.
+1 @ ****nav

Its an acquired skill reading maps on the bike! It took me days to learn :( But well worth it :smt106
Number 3... Arnt we all :riding:

Ive gave the satnav a try, but its terrible in sunlight. Probably worse at this time of day, but if im going to think about keeping it in the tankbag then i need to find a different method of mounting it...

Have you got the LCD backlight turned up? That usually helps daylight readability.

BTB, I go for Garmin units now because there is a wide range of tools that make them useful with OSM.

I have mine connected via headphone output to my Autocom , it only ever gets used for really hard to find places , in general it is onboard for long journeys as an MP3 player and a backup route planner if something bad occurs .

Just had a quick look around. That is the budget model and I would guess you found out the answer to your own question.
Wondering if there are any films that can be applied to improve daylight readability.
Hows this:

That is a stiff penalty by our standards.
