Well my wee sv cherubs, looks like I have no option but to get sell/trade in/swap my beloved Billy Blue the sv650s!!! After a long ride yesterday my lower neck is killing me again. Find when I'm riding for more than an hour I get cramp in my right calf and my neck aches. Initially thought it was due to my inexperience [just passed my test last summer], or perhaps the fact that I won't see 40 again and that it's just "auld bones"!! But, to be honest I think I need a comfier riding position. I have my heart set on the Triump Sprint ST, but with a 1050 engine size I'm guessing it's too powerful for a novice? Someone suggested the Yamaha Fazer 600 [but it's not as pretty as my 'Billy'!].
Anyhoo guys and gals, any suggestions gratefully received.

If you want a more upright riding position then the Fazer, Bandit, Hornet are all in that category.

I am sure there will be more experienced riders who have had a variety of bikes along shortly to add to the list.

Being similarly on life's downslope, I've started to hanker after something less wristy myself.

Jillyburds Hornet S is miles better for the commute and the potter, only really losing out on the blast. Stopped making them in 2002 though.

The Fazer isn't as handsome as the SV, you're right about that, but it's a terrific bike by all accounts. Less terrific but better looking is the FZ6 which replaced it.

And don't worry about the Sprint being too powerful for a novice, they fitted a speed control device to the right handlebar. I say go for it!

Choices choices... :)

Shame sbout the the aches on the SV. I had a go on a mates Bandit 1250 GT and its excellant. Its very upright, easy to handle for a big bike and I can reach the ground with both feet no problem (5ft 10). Its got massive power but its very usable in just about any gear and it doesn't scare you if you open the throttle. The engine sounds solid and its not that expensive to buy new either.

Good luck in yer new bike hunt though

Being stuck with the Pan all weekend whilst the SV keeps popping fuses, I can wholeheartedly agree with you!!

I love sportsbikes, I love the way they look, I love the way they sound, but I hate how sore I get riding them!!

I'm tempted to flog the SV once I've got it sorted this spring/summer and hunt out a new play thing instead, and keep the Pan for mile munching runs.

I too suffered the same, had to sell the SVS after a year. Bikes I've had that are really comfortable are a Hornet, Bandit 1200 (but too heavy) and the current ER6F, which I find very comfortable and so does my pillion.

I found the bandit really wide which didn't help with the feet down thing either.

Been there.. done that.. now got the 1200 Blandit. Heavy to lift off the stand, really easy to ride when it's on the move though. Any bike can be altered to suit the vertically challenged btw :p

Mate used to have a 600 Fuzzy, was most annoyed when i used to leave him on hilly bits on my SV! Got to razz the 600's to get them to do normal blat on sv.. my old 600 Blandit lived in the top end of the rev band ;) all the bikes that have been mentioned above are good all round bikes, ST's cracking tho.. also the best noise.. nice kinda howl when ya get it going!
Good luck with the search.

I had to read the first part of your post twice, it could be easily misinterpreted LOL :p

Fit some helibars, they'll improve the riding position a bit, although I still get cramp in my legs ands bottom all too quickly

I'm curious if the SV got any better for anyone? I'm starting to worry about my choice here, when I first started riding the CBR125 I didn't find it that comfortable but I became used to it and could go runs in it no problem. I did a 150 mile odd run today (long time on the bike as road wasn't fast) and I feel like I've been out walking all day rather than sitting with my ass on a bike, my wrists and shoulders just feel worn.

I'm looking into a gel seat which should help my bum a bit I'm hoping but not sure if there's much I can do about the wrists. I've read recommendations to change the angle of the levers but even when I'm not using them much I find it hard not to put weight on the handlebars.

This seemed an appropriate thread to post in as I'm not getting rid of the SV (although I have pretty much given up on the idea of travelling with it) but any tips to ease the pain of riding would be appreciated. For reference I hit 30 next year and around 5,10 in height.

Morning John, I myself am just back on a sports position bike (clipons and high pegs) and it took me a couple of weeks to get over the wrist ache thing.

as I have a bum knee gripping the tank to take the weight threw my lower back was hard, but I'm fitting some stompgrip to hopefully help that.

Cheers Mark.

Ride more. :) Seriously, ride further and more often so you build up the muscles in your wrists, forearms, neck - everywhere! - and it'll be better. I gave up on gripping the tank with my knees because I simply couldn't be ar$ed and after a while I just stopped thinking about it. A Pan European it's not but it'll take you on holiday and 350 mile trips for ice cream with lots of grins.

All my aches and pains now I just put down to old age. For reference I hit 43 next year and I'm 5'7" with unnaturally short arms.

I really thinking about a speed triple just now had a test ride on one the other day and found it fantastic. Really comfortable riding position and easy to handle, I have only had my bike license about 1 year and I had no problems with the 1050cc. As others have said, you don't need to open the throttle all the way.

i had the exact same problem. but with added 'short ar$e syndrome' as well.

it's amazing what you can actually do to an sv for not a lot of cash.. for the record i never have liked suzuki's 'sport' riding position, i always found them to be very wristy..

for the price of a set of good adjustable clipons it can transform the sv's riding position. the ones i have are not much higher than standard but because they are slightly more angled towards the rider and straighter it 'feels' higher and comfier..

I've had a 1050 Speed Triple for several years and find the riding position and ergonomics to be absolutely perfect. Everything is in exactly the right place for me (I'm 5'10) and it's comfortable enough to ride all day, even with the standard seat.

When I was looking for a new bike, I went to the Ally Pally show and sat on several bikes, including the 1200GS and the SuperDuke. The Speed Triple felt so right compared to the others, which is why I bought one.

As others have said:
Make sure levers are at correct angle - even if not using them much they affect wrists & lower arms.
Think some have tried naked footrests on S's can that be done with pointy? It could ease the cramp.
Swap fo a naked. Don't worry about windblast, you'll soon adapt & any pain is only inthe early stages.
Come up to Applecross & try my K2 naked next weekend. After a cracking dry weekend I MAY be a little saddle-sore but that will be a small price to pay.
( Auld Fart ) aged 67, so your age will NOT be a problem with any of the bikes suggested.

You are just seeing that bikes are a lot more physical than a lot of people think. Using "bits" you normally don't use.

The bigger/heavier bike you get the more physical it gets, like your CBR- SV. Thats quite a jump and from a regular riding position on a very light bike to a heavier sport one. So different "asks" on your bod.

As has been said, ride more and your body will adapt and not get as sore as quick.

Also the more experience you get the more your speed will pick up and the riding position will make more sense and become a little more comfortable, certainly on the wrists from wind pressure pushing you back, thus taking a little weight off your wrists.

Gie' it time;):)

Is it a brand new bike?

If so you may be able to swap for the Zed if you have the extra pennies for the trade-up - I believe most dealers will allow that.

However if you go go IL4 you will never have the engine braking or the punch of the V-Twin.

There is of course the Gladius if you liked the SV engine.....

It may grow on you dawn, just needs to be ridden (very) differently, more like wee H's Bandit, ask him for some pointers.
Very different torque / power set up to the sv (as with all parallel's) take a bit getting used to but you may find you come to like it.
Give me a shout if you want to go for a wee run, or you and wee H could pop over to me for a coffee, i'd be willing to wring its neck for you;)

You know what? Riding the 2005 blade felt a lot comfier than the SV and great to ride at higher speeds where it would be a chore for nekkids. I'm 43 next September so no youngster but I'm not throwing the towel yet. I say get yourself fitter if you can and you'll be alright.

It may grow on you dawn, just needs to be ridden (very) differently, more like wee H's Bandit, ask him for some pointers.
Very different torque / power set up to the sv (as with all il4's) take a bit getting used to but you may find you come to like it.
Give me a shout if you want to go for a wee run, or you and wee H could pop over to me for a coffee, i'd be willing to wring its neck for you;)

I'm getting a bit confused here, what bike are we talking about? I thought it was the Er-6f but I thought it was a parallel twin rather than an il4?

sorry, yes it is a parallel twin, still not the same torque / power set up as the v twin (really dont want to get into debate about engine performance as i'm easily confused ;) )
Cheers John, corrected.

Dawn have a look at this (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorbikes/sportmotorbikes/3087158/Kawasaki-ER-6f-Dream-machine.html)

I thought I may have the wrong bike as there was a few mentions of a 750, I didn't think there was much debate about the parallel twin vs the v-twin though - reviewers seem to favour the Er-6f but owner's reviews seem to give more of a nod to the SV. I do rather like my v-twin particular the engine braking.
