. . . . . safe and sound, aside from the whopping bruise slap bang in the middle of my forehead from a spider bite.

Had an absolutely FANTASTIC time. The best ride out ever and one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Next adventure - Cape to Cairo.:smt026:smt026:smt026:smt026:smt026

Will let you guys know all about it when I have more time, but here's just a few of my hundreds of piccies.

Absolutely loved it.:smt049 Couldn't have done this trip on my SV.

The FG650 was brilliant. Very comfortable riding position and handles so well, I found cornering much much easier than on the SV. I had mine lowered so it was just the right height for me. I didn't have the usual aches and pains I get from riding long distances on the SV, instead I was exhausted from watching out for the cows, goats, pigs, baboons etc running across the roads on some days.:D

Ok, about my trip and some photos.

Not sure if I should put this up in the photo section? Mods, feel free to do as you please.

Cape Town on the day I arrived. Was very windy but still warm, temperatures of around 30 celcius. It was also the day of the famous Cape Argus Cycle Tour. Apparently for the first time in seven years the weather forced organisers to physically shut down the race as the wind blew riders off their bikes between Llandudno and Bakoven. :D

Lunch stop in Kalk Bay with new best friends for the next two weeks. To my right is Jurgen, our tour guide. He was in the bakkie (as the South Africans say). Next to him is Pascale, 37 year old German rowing instructor. He was only with us for a day as he needed to get to Jo'burg in a week. To my left is John, mad, mad, mad 60 year old American, and next to him is 30 year old German salesman Sebastian.

Bain's Kloof Pass.

It was absolutely boiling that day. 39 celcius and very very humid. The car with air con was very tempting indeed!

Bain's Koof Pass was amazing. Very twisty and I unintentionally scraped my knee on the road a few times. The scenery was spectacular.

The Swartberg Pass.

John and I chickened out of doing this on the bikes. Sebastian really wanted to do it but not on his own. So we all went up in the car for a sundowner.

It was absolutely amazing and I was glad I was in the car. So many hairpin bends and very little room for error.

I found the heat unbearable on the third day when temperatures soared to 39 celcius. It was unbearably hot and humid but with the lining out of the textiles it was much more comfortable. I would definitely say go for it!!!

No idea where exactly you've been, but I never felt any less safe than I do riding here in Leeds. We came across many ,many bikers, both South African and tourists. You could always tell the South Africans as most ride in shorts and T- shirts  If I went back to SA again, I'd feel confident enough to rent a bike and bugger off on my own. One of the guys we rode with on the first day did just that as does a large number of other bikers.

Yep, if you are worried about safety, then I guess group riding is the best option for you. Don't go off the beaten track and don't ride at night and you should be absolutely fine.

Two very contradictory(sp?) statements I feel...How can you say that you don't feel safe when you go back there so often? I would just stay home if I felt that way.

As for the apparent "lack" of bikes, I think you need to open your eyes next time...Riding in SA is hugely popular, even more so in the areas you mentioned (Swaziland and Lesotho) although in those areas they would be trailies rather than superbikes. I belong to a couple of huge South African rider forums and never before have motorcycles been as popular.

As for hiring a bike, unless you are in CT or JNB you will find it difficult to hire anything other than a BMW or Hardly Davidson. PM me if you want any more details on either the forums or possible contacts regarding bike hire.

J.

Wow, wow, wow!!!!

How'd you enjoy it? It looks mint!

Any spills? Thrills? Broken bones? How'd the bike fair up?

How easy was it to get your visas? Need many injections?

Miles per day? What Sat nav?

It looks fab!!!!

It was fab and I enjoyed it loads.

No broken bones, no spills, and lots of thrills. :p

I did nearly drop the bike once, on the first day. But that was purely because I was still trying to get used to the bike..

Visa is dead easy to obtain.

Didn't have any injections as we weren't travelling to any high risk areas.

Average of 230 miles per day. The most we did was about 300 miles on a couple of days.

Didn't need Sat Nav as we had a guide, although we did use it on a couple of occasions.

Why did the fuzz pull you over? And were you able to offer a cash "incentive" for them to let you off?

To check our driving licences.:D And for a laugh really as requested by our guide who'd gone on ahead of us. They were very friendly and no cash incentives were required. ;)

Day 11 and we get to our lodgings for the night, a private game reserve. Motorcycles are allowed in, but John and I promptly parked up the bikes and jumped onto the landrover to get to the compound.

Like hell I was riding a bike into a game reserve!:reaper:

Sebastian was indeed intending to ride to the compound, but changed his mind last minute. Good call too as less than 2km up the road were these,

to see the hippos. They are so cute in an ugly kinda way.

Man, this thing is UGLY. Our guide, Reilly, steered the boat ever so close to the beast. All I could think about was how many pairs of shoes I could get and handbags to match.:-#. Only kidding.

Wow - cool pictures.

I'm off to SA at the end of May. A week around Cape Town, a week in the game parks, and a week diving around Sodwana bay (unless the sardine run is early!).

No bikes for me though - we'll be in a cage :-(

Nope - we've booked an internal flight to Jo'burg for my mate's wedding. But I'll be driving down from Kruger to Sodwana Bay, which might be interesting.

Keith.
