View Full Version : Best Console Motorcycle Racing Game?

We having a day at the Uni where I work to promote motorcycling.

One thing we are going to do to attract people is have a lap time shootout on a bike racing game, with the person with the fastest lap winning a prize.

Just canvassing opinion on what everyone thinks would be the best game to use.

Personally the only game i've got is Tourist Trophy on the PS2.

I think the organisers want to go with a PS3 or Xbox 360 on the day as they are a bit more upto date consoles.

Does anyone know if PS2 games work on a PS3?

At the mo i'm leaning towards TT, but there are a few new ones like SBK-08 and motoGP 08 but i've never played them.

Any suggestions for games to use would be appreciated, or any that are ****e to avoid.

Cheers
Mike

MotoGP 2008 (by capcom) is really good, i like the handling on it. The Namco ones are very arcadey and crap.

The early Moto GP games on PS2 really were poop. However the original one on PC, that they first bought out on Xbox was real good.

However for me, TT was the very best.

I've got SBK-08 for PS3 I've on played it a few times, but it was pretty good to play. Steering is slightly oversensitve on it though, but you soon get used to it.

Its definately better to play than the Moto GP games on PS2 were.

Tourist Trophy is the daddy.

Some interesting handling defects and obvious favoritism but absoulute quality and detail that you expect from the Gran Turismo mob. Got to say I'm a GT junkie so am slightly biased.

I would be out for a PS3 the tomorrow if TT2 came out. Hey we can dream!?:(

Yup deffo, if you lean too far over the front under hard braking you sort of stoppie and step it out into a corner. Love it.

I miss my ps2 simply for tourist trophy. Its so realistic, and a huge shame they never made a newer version for the ps3. I would probably buy a ps3 just for that game.

I believe PS2 games can only be played on the 60GB version of the PS3.

Only some of them, others will play but jog constantly and some will just crash.

Moto GP 08 is the first bike game i ever played and although i like it, compared to most car racing games out atm it seems rubbish, but then i find it very hard on simulation and have become addicted already!

Not a racing game as such, and hardly realistic, but Burnout Paradise on the PS3 (and PC) is pretty decent. The bike pack was added a few months ago as free DLC.

I thought SBK 08 on PS2 was sound. Might get Moto GP 08 for the Wii, it's released at the end of this month apparantly, but don't know if it's any good.

the bikes on PGR4 are great, very arcade like handling, big slides etc but really good fun and quicker than the cars!

I also think Riding Spirit 2 was underated on PS2, the sound was so poor it put most people off but the bike categories and handling was good and you got the TT circuit included, it was a massive game really.

NO NO NO NO NO , THE daddy of all the GP games was MOTOGP2 by Climax on the original Xbox ...... that was an absolute sheer joy to play and even had the 2 stroke 500 bikes in it if you liked . I raced in the leagues online with it and all the Xbox Live players still rate it as the best GP game out there ....... the later ones just didn`t cut it . I spent absolutely hours and hours on that game and could only get to 800 in the world out of 92,000 players . I do miss the camaraderie that game had on Live and I still have many of those players on my Friends list 5 years later :)

SBK 08 is alright, it tries to be more a sim than other bike games. Bike handling is decent, it's tough on simulation settings - you can be spat off quite easily, and it's rewarding when you do a good lap, eventually, but as a game it's pants. The menus, the AI, the replays (or lack thereof), the graphics to a lesser extent, all just feel very previous-gen.

I thought the Namco Moto GP on PS2 games were good fun, total arcadeness, but good fun.
Tourist Trophy is very polished, but blighted by a throttle nanny that you'll look endlessly for an option to turn it off with, and rubbish tyre physics which lead to some odd tyre spinning but not stepping out at all moments. Has a nice "feel" of riding the bike though, as long as you're not trying to ask too much of it.

One thing i dont understand about motogp08 is i can never get a good time round the track and always 5 seconds off the next person but when it comes to the race i can come off at the first corner of a lap and by the end of it ive caught up and passed 10 other riders?? dont add up!

Riding spirits 2 on ps2 loved that game

I recently finished Moto GP 06 which was pretty hard, but good.

I have been playing PGR4 probabably the most fine bike game i have played but not that realistic.

I have only played demos of Moto GP 08 and SBK 08 but they both seem pretty good, plus you can get SBK 08 £13 New.

I traded that in against Tourist Trophy. Wish I hadn't :(

For racing: SBK08 is pretty good. On simulation difficulty it's impossible, you'll either go wide on every bend or lowside it, guaranteed. Basic/Arcade settings and it's a lot more fun. Haven't played MotoGP08 but the general consensus from gamers is that it's not a patch on 07.

For roads: Test Drive Unlimited has a pretty good selection of bikes (two Ninjas, Daytona, Speed Triple, Agusta, and two Dukes) and combine that with the multiplayer and the entire island of Oahu and you have a virtual rideout! It has finally beaten the previous 'rideout' game which was Road Rash 3D (really)

Burnout Paradise has bikes which are fun but the game isn't up to much when using them - there's hardly anything to do with them compared to the cars, and you have to register with EA to play online (spits)

Midnight Club LA only has three bikes but one of them is the Ninja ZX-14 and it completely dominates everything else in the game once you get it. I really enjoyed Midnight Club, though again the emphasis will be on cars and you have to play for a bit to unlock everything.

Oh, and there's always GTAIV... make sure you put the 'Spawn NRG900' cheat in your phone as they're hard things to find if you wipe out and it explodes/you die/you get arrested.

SBK09 is about the best at the moment..

Although on PS2 TT Superbikes was the most realistic.

No. Get 08 for less than £10 from somewhere. 09 has Portimao and Kyalami but otherwise is almost exactly the same, worth £45 it is not.

Absolute Tosh .... 08 was a sack of pooh and 09 was miles better in the handling stakes ...... personally go and buy Fuel instead , not exactly a bike racing game but a damn site more fun than either SBK games are . If you find SBK09 for £30 then buy it , but not at full whack .

I thought they were both equally vague, though perhaps the assisted mode was a bit more fun. Simulation mode in the 09 version is just as challenging, but also just as wishy washy as the 08 version.

Yeah 09 is defiantly better.. played Fuel at my friends house the other day, after all the hype I found is rather lifeless..

So going around and around in circles on the same old track day in day out is NOT boring .

A good friend of mine partys up with me on Live and we just go and razz about the map hitting all the points and it makes a refreshing change from the GP games . We have often stated that it would be brilliant to do this in real life by just having the opportunity to gas about like dills on vaste tracks of land . We did the same thing in Test Drive Unlimited . Personally I think it`s a good game that gives you the opportunity to Free Ride wherever you like and become a bit of an explorer and to chill out a bit on Xbox Live .

Is Moto GP 08 = Moto GP?

I got Moto GP on the PSP and it's good but the lack of a graduated acceleration let it down. I just got Moto GP on the Wii and I love it! There's a controller configuration where you hold the control like a throttle and twist it  it makes the game way more fun as you can really become more skilful at it, when you have an on/off throttle it's really hard to go round corners!

Having said that I've only just got it so haven't really played it loads. I'm starting in the 125s, doing the championship on them first, cos the 800s are a nightmare to ride (at least without plenty of practice!).

I found the bikes on TDU completely terrible..

Anyway, best console bike sim was TT Superbikes on the PS2. Never played Tourist Trophy, only seen the glitzy graphics.

For pure simulation and for pure fun, with a huge variety of bikes across all classes, inc NW200 track and the full TT course, etc, TT Superbikes is the way to go. Would even buy a PS2 and that game for the right price..

Listen to this man.

I find that anyone that did not like the game jsut couldn't get to grips with how realistic it was in terms of a twitchy rear and flighty front end. I used to play it on a projector at night, lying in my bed with surround sound on. Bloody intense game, racing round that track at ludicrous speeds - knowing fine well that if you crashed after 16 minutes, you'd never beat your score! Aaaahhh, god I wish they done it for the 360. Good times. :D

I agree the bikes on TDU were not good , but same again for TT Superbikes , I even went out and bought a PS2 again to play it , an hour later I managed to get a refund on the lot and got rid ....... the Pinnacle of Bike Games for me was MotoGP2 on the original Xbox and first Xbox Live game ..... I put in a ridiculous amount of time online on that game and made some great friends over Live , something that is sadly missing from the next generation of bike games , they got the atmosphere and handling right in that game and it became very competitive , made you very obsessive about those last Tenths on a race track :)

Tourist trophy is ok... Gets very annoying though as the handling is a little... Fubar. E.G. hit a bump when leaning and it just falls. Grrrr.

Other than that Motogp 08. Very good game! All they need I think for 09 is some traction control... 08 dont have that and imo it should, should be able to play with it as a setting like anything else.

Infact I wish I could be in charge of a game like that id make it great. Make it so you have a budget to spend on equipment and development. At the moment you get upgrade points which is ok... but they need to make the game more realistic. Would make it more fun for me.

Anyhows for now get it! :D

Yeah, I think they even had something of a 'reverse gear' thing going on as you had to start the engine before you could wheel it backwards!

Saying that, it's the world's best game for doing virtual rideouts. If anyone ever wants to do one, shout!
