Now to say my bike has the odd imperfection is an understatement. Was thinking earlier how i'd go about painting all the panels. How much would it cost a proffessional to do for me??? Is it worth attempting myself and if so would i need special kit or would a decent shakey can jobby be sufficient...

Just thought i'd add the bike already has a custom paint job so i can't really just buy new panels...

I think a shaky can job would be ok when it was freshly done but unless it's proper stuff you can't wash it. I know a chap who knows a chap who can give you a quote for a proper paintjob if you want? Might be expensive though

why can't you wash it?

there's no reason you cant wash a home done paint job if, unless maybe if you get your paints from the early learning centre

Yeah i bet it wouldn't be cheap. probably looking at a fair few hundred pounds i think.

I like the idea of doing it myself. Preparing the panels, getting the right paint and choosing an excentric colour.

Advice:

Before you go exotic/excentric, get the cheapest paint you can get and some old panels.

Practice, Practice, Practice.

You CAN get a good result from cans, obviously not as good as with a spraygun, but not too bad.

Best tip I ever got was once you have done the colour, get a pro to put a 2-pack clear coat over it - should be quite cheap as no prep work needed etc, but its not something you can do at home due to the cyanide gas given off as it cures............

oh, if you're worried about the isocyanates used in some 2-packs then buy some from RS paints, they do an isocyante free 2-pack lacquer in an aerosol. they supply everything, not cheap, but better than halfords stuff.

But as soulkiss said, practice makes perfect. and preparation is key.

take a read of this

Good link. I was half way through then read this.

You'll also need a sheet of Wet and Dry sand paper in each the following grades/grit:
200-400 (course-medium)
600-800 (medium)
1500 (fine)
2000 (super fine, aka Jessica Alba grade)

Very funny guy.

Thats who I went to to get the paint to redo my SV after my 1st off - perfect match, great service and advice when I phoned, the guy basically talked me through the whole process, I still have the laquer as I never got to that stage.

I thought that 2-pack referred to the fact that it came in 2-packs and had to be mixed at time of use - hence the surprise at getting it in rattle-cans

yes and no, it does consist of 2 parts, hence name.

But now you can get rattle cans which have 2 compartments, press a button in on the bottom to mix the 2 parts then spray away. they obviously then have a limited life time before it goes off in the can, but more than long enough to use it all.
