Hi there,

I was coming through the Limehouse link tunnel this morning when one of my front indicators fell off, the indicator lights on the dash flashed and the alarm triggered once too, probably as a result of the change in resistance in the circuit I guess, as I think the indicator bulb has also blown.

Anyway, with all this flashing and bleeping I was momentarily startled and caught the throttle just a blip, unfortunately it was as I was passing a speed camera in the tunnel, which flashed (twice).

So it looks like I've got a ticket coming, annoying after the efforts I've made not to get any for the last few years! My question is do you guys think it will be worthwhile explaining what happened to cause me to speed up through the trap, or should I just take it on the chin and pay the fine and take the points?

Wait and see if you get a ticket first.

they will have heard every excuse, so I seroiusly doubt you'll get any joy with that, besides letting you off doesn't make them any money.............:)

Cheers Mark.

If you want to take it to court and feel that your blip has a fighting chance, then go for it matey.

They will hear plenty of excuses as to whys and how it happened but in the end it was speeding, wasn't it.

My father has just been nabbed too though and they sent him on a speed awareness course, resulting in no points being added to his licence, the course still cost £60 though.

Yeah, sadly that was my gut feeling about it really, but as long as they don't charge me more for explaining it might be worth a try. What I should have added to my original post was a question if anyone else has ever appealed against a "zap" successfully!

Speed awareness course is interesting. I'd be quite happy to do that instead of getting points as I've made a big effort to keep the speeds down when commuting over the last few years. And yes, if it went to a court of law and I was asked if I'd gone through a speed trap past the speed allowed I'd have to say "yes" but I'm wondering if they ever consider extenuating circumstances

depends if there's a picture of him with his chin on the mudguard hand outstretched to catch the indicator, alarm blaring. In which case you'll just be looking a D.W/O.D.C&A swin =D>

I went through a camera a little quick when I was caught in the tractor-beam of the spaceship of the LGM who wanted to probe me. Magistrate let me off, so you've got a good chance!

haha, luckily I didn't actually see the indicator falling off, so I had both hands on the bars, in the approved manner!

It was only when I pulled over after the various flashes (both from bike and camera) that I noticed the indicator stalk was dangling - very annoying actually as last week it was the rear indicator on the same side that had come undone, I knew I should've gone round and nylocked all the others while I was repositioning that one!

if there's a pic of the dingleys dangling then it's worth a shot worst they can do is give you points which is what you would get anyway!

Or screw you over even more for not making sure your bike is road worthy, their view may be, well what if it happened fallen off and hit someone??? I dunno though

in that case I'd lie and say someone rammed me in a car just before, then again I'm a bit of a dodgy ******* - check the beard!

Lol, do you go round and check every single screw and nut on your bike before riding?
Personally I check the lights are working, check the chain after ever ride and that's about it.... :D

I've been into our fitters storeroom and got an assortment of nuts, hoping that one will fit enough to get me home, I have a cable tie if all else fails, I shall take a picture of the indicator on my phone and write a letter tonight, ready for the ticket in the post so yeah, good call on taking a picture of it, although I suppose it doesn't prove much, they could claim that I made up the story and took a picture of it after I'd undone it myself I guess!

sorry no I meant the speed camera pic might have caught it (although taking a pic isn't a bad Idea).
The nut will probably be either a 10mm 12mm or 13mm (socket size, not sure about thread)

I doubt the camera will get it because it was behind and to the left of me, the indicator that fell off was the front right, shame tho because as you say that would be a perfect extra bit of evidence to support my case.

Never mind, I'll resign myself to the 3 points for the first time in 5 years and then if they view it leniently it'll be a nice surprise!

Yeah, but the general advice there is own up if it's a fair cop; not make up fanciful excuses.

Speeding is a strict liability crime. It doesnt matter what was going on in your head, just that you done the action of speeding.

(finally A level law has come in handy)

that wasn't the point anyway.

Besides, thought I'd already indicated what I'd do about four posts above....

Just for reference, the nut for the indicator is 4mm thread, 8mm head.

You never kno it might have flashed but it could be out of film and you might get lucky.

I wouldn't explain, otherwise they'll do you for riding without due care etc. That'll be worse!

admittiting you wasn't in control of your speed to the plod is not something i would do.

Would the Magistrate interpret it as 'you admit there was something wrong with your vehicle, therefore you should have been taking steps to slow down and stop, not speed up and your a motorcyclist, where's my black cap'.
