When did FTW become such a popular expression? Does anyone actually say it in real life? Just doesn't sound right to me

For The Win...

And it kicked off mainstream about 3 months or so ago. But it was on 4chan maybe 9 months before that. No idea why, but it's taken off.

EDIT: Actually, IIRC, FTW came from 4chan after a spout of AoPS in b board.

Magnum

FTW is much older than a few months. I remember seeing it on the internet at least two years ago.

Whats AoPS? And why are you on 4chan :D

Art of Problem Solving. Imagine b board doing that...

I've been on 4chan probably since early '04. Good laugh sometimes. EDIT: Some people reckon 4chan is the birth place of most internet legends, but I sincerely doubt that claim.

Habbo raid? Me no comprende anglais!! That was 2006 wasn't it? Or do you mean the 2008 one?

Hmm, 'oldfag' - I think all I'll say is that I've been on the internet in a few claimed 'birth places.'

i suspect it's the catalyst for most though, i've been around since about the same time as you and 90% of what comes round the rest of the net was popular for a few days about 8 weeks beforehand on there...

Magnum

Its the 2006 one i was on about, didnt even know there was a 2008 one.

4chan scares me... to much freaky and disgusting stuff on it.

 If 4chan scares you, don't ever, ever look through my browsing history. Freaky is funny, disgusting is often quickly skipped over.

It's unfortunate that some of the content is there, but that's what you get in a place like 4chan.

Have you seen the other sites similar to 4chan?

PS. Mods/anyone that doesn't know what we're talking about - you're probably better off that way. 4chan content is definitely not for the faint of heart. I did consider linking to one of the more mainstream elements of 4chan, but decided against it.

There's loads of "chan" sites, most of the same though really.

Probably the funniest alternative I've seen had to be the EU version of 4chan.

Didnt it get closed down? Theres too much cheese pizza on any chan site, i dont know why they arnt moderated well enough.

The EU version did get closed, yes, the story goes that it annoyed too many EU type people - but that was the entire point.

You're missing the point of the "chan" sites if you think they should be moderated. It's all about being anonymous & not having (too many) rules.

Though you do have people like Chris Poole.

Magnum

I only meant moderating of the cheese pizza, becuase i think stuff like that crosses the line.

Do you know boxxys real name?

Baph

Do you know boxxys real name?

Nope, but then I'm 'old school' enough not to care. I've met many influencial people in the IT world in my time on the net (met online and in person in some cases).

I'm of the opinion that until someone proves beyond all doubt that they are who/what they claim, then they can claim anything they want. So for all I know, you could be boxxy, and I wouldn't really give a damn. :)

 Don't get me wrong, I know the people (well, I should say I know of the people) involved with CBRC. I also know where they like to hang out (as I too like to hide there).

Fine line they're walking publishing what they did.

You don't know they published boxxy's details for all and sundry? 16 year old girl...house number, street, etc etc.

Only they got the information wrong.

As in the information the published was correct, but wasn't boxxy. So they published real details for a random girl, completely unrelated to boxxy.

CBRC is a group of people that don't like boxxy, and have given the group a name which gives that acronym.

No, they intended on publishing boxxy's details, so that boxxy would understand/appreciate the medium of the Internet. Only they failed, epically.

I've no idea if anyone followed up on the details published. However, I wouldn't bother looking for those details, even Google went to the effort of removing their cache of it!!

Magnum
29-03-09, 08:16 PM
Then the CBRC are pathetic. Ive been reading a blog about the whole thing, and to be honest it is just pathetic how she was threatened and blackmailed over an innocent and funny youtube video. http://boxxystory.blogspot.com/

+1.

However, for the sanity of the moderators (who I can imagine are reading this thread & the only thought they have is "WTF?"), and anyone else reading this, perhaps this is a good place to end the conversation. :)

Note that my other means of contact are available on my profile (my PM inbox is currently full) if you want to continue there. Same goes for anyone else really that wants more information.

Apollo1, IIRC is If I recall Correctly. This thread started as a discussion on another acronym, FTW, which is explained above.

Apologies to those that consider the above chat a derailment- but as I see "FTW" coming from 4chan, it wasn't really. Only that the majority of the details have been omitted as they certainly don't fall within the .Org's U rating.

On a forum i was on a few years ago, when you get to 1337 posts, the post count shows up as LEET.

Gracie, replace certain letters for certain numbers. Drop certain letters as appropriate.

733t was originally a "code" for the best of the best, the elite. Only, it wasn't, because it was a p* take of those that thought they were the best of the best, but really weren't, and were quite the opposite.
